My Little Pony: The (Abridged) Mentally Advanced Series Ep 1
This is the Mentally Advanced series for My Little Pony: FiM. It is designed for an audience of older kids who may or not be kids at all, but rather strange folks who meet in abandoned mines to supe up Power Wheels for racing events. I was originally part of the FimAbridged team sans first episode, brought on officially as a writer and the voice for Braeburn. However, I had strong disagreements with the group's organizational ethos and the way they presumed to handle creative control. Long story short, I wrote the foundation of their script for episode two, but then the team's teenagers chopped it up and altered it for bizarre emotional reasons. The team member primarily responsible for this removed many jokes because they went over her head, or because she complained that some material could be offensive if someone stretched their imagination far enough. When last I checked the team had twelve members aside from myself and is still growing. There is no clear leadership, and after more than a week it appears on the surface that only one voice actor has sent in lines for one scene. They are focused intently on, among other things, a negative video response they received for their first episode: they have already responded to it through comments on Youtube with multiple accounts, they've made their own video response implying the guy is a Derpy, and now they're planning on taking another jab at him in their release of episode two (assuming that ever gets off the ground <b>...</b>

So here's the second episode in what I imagine will be on ongoing trend of silly videos. First of all, I want to give a special thanks to the person who recognized the Math Blasters reference (I was so excited!) and to the people who recognized the Squirrel Nut Zippers song. Also, it looks like at least one person was able to read that bar code in the title screen, and Smeg and I were both quite pleased about that. As I get this thing better organized, I may find myself with the ability to bring on other people to help me with voices and so on. The next episode is going to feature Smeg doing a voice, so we'll see how he does. If I do start looking for help, I will make a video post and let everyone know, but we'll see how well my friends do before I start branching out online.

So on to round three! This episode features Smeg voice acting for Gilda. To be honest, I think he tried a little too hard, but after he finished his rum he loosened up a bit and did a better job. He certainly did good work of freaking out in the final scene; he had to sit down and have a breather in the other room after all the furious screaming. Sadly, I could only use the lines that didn't peak like crazy, and I had to make him stand at the other end of the room after trying all else. As a note, Pinkie isn't meant to have a Russian accent despite what Gilda may imply during this episode. Smeg wrote most of his own lines, so the things Gilda says about Pinkie are by extension just what Smeg has interpreted of the character so far. Several posters have been critical of the pacing of the series, and I've tried to work on that this episode. Hope it shows. At least I'm not working with AJ/Twilight all episode, in any case. Who's idea was it, anyway, to make an entire episode featuring nothing but the show's two foils feeling exhausted and disappointed?

It's episode five, and the entire gang is roped into a suicide mission by Princess Celestia. However, along the way the trip becomes a suicide journey of self-discovery, and the girls come to find that their true enemy was the dragon all along. Also, What's-her-name tags along and she's yellow like nobody's business. Finally, I come to terms with the fact that my video editing software would be really good if it weren't sort of terrible for complex editing projects. I had a lot of issues with editing this episode and I realize I've basically pushed my software to its limits. The result was a lot of crashing, one whole set of lines that wound up a little out of synch with the animation, a tenth of a second that was deleted for no discernible reason, and sometimes Twilight changed colors inexplicably. In the near future, when finances make it possible, it will be time to upgrade.

The interesting thing about this episode was that it was already about bickering ponies, so it was full of angry ponies shouting at each other no matter what I may have wanted to do. Also, I'd love more pictures of Twilight with Mrs. Buzzy from those of you willing to draw them. Mrs. Buzzy was a present given to Twilight from her dad while she was away at Celestia's school. Aside from being a cute toy for her to play with, it was also a good way for her to practice levitation, and Twilight's dad is always looking out for his daughter.

My Little Pony: The (Abridged) Mentally Advanced Series Ep 7
Let me start this one off by apologizing profusely for the completely messed-up colors. I had some catastrophic software failures for this episode, and sadly this was the best I could get without re-editing the entire episode, and I sincerely lack the desire to do that. I actually lost about a third of the episode to weird color fluctuations caused by a crash. I didn't catch them in time and saved over the backup file before I realized what had happened, and I had to scrap about a day's worth of work. I mean, technologically speaking, this episode has been a huge pain. The good news? I'm upgrading video editing software to something less prone to diabolical glitches, so the next episode ought not to be so messed up. On the other hand, I'm now learning the quirks of my new software, but it's more sophisticated so maybe I can do some neat stuff with it. This one didn't come out as clean as I would have liked, but I'm kind of picking things up on the fly. I'll make sure to avoid this kind of editing trainwreck for the next episode. Anyway, hope it doesn't distract too much this time around. Does anybody know how to prevent the colors from darkening when using Sony Vegas or what might be causing that? I'm on a free trial for it right now, but I'd love some advice how to route that basic problem, and in the meantime I'm experimenting to discover why and how.

And we're back in business with episode nine, wherein Twilight identifies problems by using her brilliant organizational skills. From a technical standpoint, I think this episode come out pretty well. Still, I'm looking forward to the next episode, personally. It's full of varied social interaction, which is the best for the kind of ridiculous stuff I do. I was actually stunned by how little dialogue exists in Winter Wrap Up. They sing for half the episode, then all the dialogue is completely expository, with each pony exchanging maybe about five lines each if they aren't being run down by a tractor. I considered singing myself, but while I'm willing to just have at a lot of things, singing seemed like too cruel a punishment on everyone watching. That said, though, I know a girl who might be interested in some singing, so that could be an interesting development in the future. Also, this is the first appearance of CrazierGirl in a pony episode as editor, and frankly I think she did a great job. Ideally, she'll be helping out much more in the future, here.

Episode ten is ready! I'm just as surprised as anyone. I got two "days off" and finished it off. I can't believe how long it took. Before classes started, I had hoped I might still be able to do these things once every two weeks or so during the semester. Looks like that's a fantasy, though. So everyone on my team has been looking forward to this, because everyone has gotten involved! We've also got a singer, who I've nicknamed "Cossack" Kate! We also considered the Mad Russian, and I think there were some plays on "red" since she's a red-head. Anyway, she's not a Cossack. She wanted me to explain that. Some sources also inform me that she is God, but they are dubious at best. I don't know what else to say, really. I uploaded ponies against the odds. Now I just have to do it again some time.

Then I follow it up with, "ok, then what are you really afraid of that might happen if you lose or choke?" Most worry they will "fail" and look stupid. So I ask, "What is failure?" As I keep asking these types of questions, they begin to realize what they are really afraid of is feeling difficult emotions like embarrassment, disappointment, inadequacy, etc. So the truth is athletes get performance anxiety because they are afraid of feeling their difficult emotions. How do you help athletes get over performance anxiety and develop mental toughness then? What athletes need to do is embrace their difficult emotions by understanding that all emotions are good and useful.
