One of the most interesting and keynote spots in the city is Merdeka Square, which wraps together plenty of the countrys history in its architecture and timeline; a real unblemished throwback from the colonial era it fuses that flavor with its Moorish-inspired buildings and symbolism of the modern, independent Malaysian state. Meredeka Square was built by the British colonialists as a reminder of home and a place where they could relax and socialize in familiar surroundings. It is sandwiched between Jalan Sultan Hishamudin and just up the road from the Central Market, Jamek Mosque and the point at which the Klang and Gombak Rivers merge. The huge rectangular pandan (field), an wide open space which is striking for this modern, crowded city, is surrounded on all sides by an array of interesting and architecturally-differing buildings. It symbolizes British rule with its cricket pitch and the Tudor-styled Royal Selangor Club the most-exclusive whites-only club in the city. Approach Merdeka Square and the most striking sight is the flagpole, a 100-metre high thick steel tube bolted in sections, with the Malaysian national flag hoisted aloft, fluttering in gentle breeze. This giant flagpole, reportedly the highest in the world, marks the place where, at exactly midnight on August 31, 1957, the Union Jack was lowered and the Malaysian flag was raised to signify independence from British colonial rule. Hari Merdeka (Independence Day)
On the morning of Saturday, August 31, 1957, the festivities moved to the newly-completed Merdeka Stadium. More than 20000 people witnessed the ceremony, which began at 9:30 am. Those in attendance included rulers of the Malay states, foreign dignitaries, members of the federal cabinet and citizens. The Queen's representative, the Duke of Gloucester presented Tunku Abdul Rahman with the instrument of independence. Tunku then proceeded to read the Proclamation of Independence, which culminated in the chanting of 'Merdeka' seven times with the crowd joining in. The ceremony continued with the raising of the National Flag of Malaya accompanied by the national anthem being played and a 21-gun salute, followed by an azan call and a thanksgiving prayer in honor of this great occasion.

Dated 9/7/2011 - 2.58pm The peaceful march regardless of age, race and gender showing how Malaysians from all walks of life coming as one united entity to seek for fair and clean elections. This is one of the best experience for me in this lifetime seeing the people expressing their right in the utmost peaceful way chanting slogans for reforms without using force. It promised a new progression towards a better civilized society. KUDOS! ENDLESS CROWD XD Seen: Pro-BN reporters and police garrisoned themselves in MABA building/complex being greeted by the marchers. The crowd is made up from KL Sentral, Kotaraya and Pudu (some managed to escape the firings at Tung Shin Hospital). But sadly the ones from Sogo, DBKL (Masjid Jamek) and Kampung Baru (KLCC) didn't made it on time due to severe violation of human rights, getting hauled up, beaten, fired directly by gaseous cannisters. Solianos Singing " Tanah Pusaka" for Merdeka Day 2010
In the wake of the 1-Malaysia unity campaign, mooted by our beloved Prime Minister, we feel that we could contribute our part by creating a music legacy that represents Malaysian music at its best. The music has to transcend races and appeals to a cross section of Malaysians. Something that even an ordinary Malaysian on the street would feel proud and patriotic to be associated with. The Solianos is one of the most talented musical families in Malaysia. Together with pop pop music, a local fast-rising lifestyle/audiophile music label who has international reach and has gained international recognition, the Solianos plan to release, for the first time , an album of classic Malay songs done in jazz and sung in multi-part harmony that is the signature and touch of the Solianos for the past 3 decades. The repertoire would include "patriotic" songs and classics such as "Tanah Pusaka" and "Putera Puteri". To kick start this project and in conjunction with Merdeka Day 2010 celebration on 31st August, we are presenting our own version of "Tanah Pusaka", done with the special Solianos touch.
