It is devoted to the art of the castrato, those men who were mutilated just at or before puberty if and when their families thought (hoped?) they had enough talent to become great singers and therefore great earners.... Audiences flocked to hear these singers with the lung power and volume of men and the range of women; the procedure stopped their voices from breaking while their bodies continued to grow. They were the highest-paid singers in the world, while at the same time they were reviled, mocked, and adored. Monstrous photos of Bartoli's head on mutilated statues of men dot the pages of the accompanying booklet. We get it, we get it! As a marketing plan (said to have been Bartoli's brainchild) it certainly is bizarre. The music is another story entirely. Not all of it is great stuff--Porpora was no Mozart and neither was Francisco Araia--but the performance level of these showpieces raises the simply good and flashy to a level of high art and wonderment, just as it did when the castrati for whom they were written first sang them. And happy to report, Bartoli is in her best voice and not miked too closely (on her Sonnambula recording you could hear her tongue move). The CD opens with a "simile" aria <b>...</b>

#1 - Aria Di Mezzo Carattere (Opera Theme) - Final Fantasy 6
For me, the beauty of video game music is its ability to enhance or improve the effect of a particular area, character, or scene. All of the songs on the countdown are excellent examples of this trait. Aria Di Mezzo Carattere however, completely flips this around. This single song is so powerful, so moving, so fricken magnificent, that IT becomes the main focus and the actual opera scene is secondary. When I first started this countdown, I knew right away this track would be #1 and it's the only one that hasn't changed positions over time. This, more than any other VG song ever has stood out in my mind and I am completely certain that it's the best Super Nintendo song of all time. So, how did I do? Did I leave out anything that absolutely deserves to be here? Or was anything on here that shouldn't have been? I really appreciate all your guy's comments, its been very cool to hear that there's a bunch of other people who enjoy the classic Nintendo music as much as I do :).

This song is the opera from FFVI (FFIII when it was first released on the SNES), performed for the first and I think only time in English. It translates roughly to "Air of Half Character" from Italian. It's number twelve on the album "More Friends Music From FINAL FANTASY ~Final Fantasy Orchestra Concert in Los Angeles 2005~" (yes, I know what a long name that is - it's actually the whole name, though), performed in the Gibson Amphitheater in Los Angeles by the World Festival Symphony Orchestra, featuring Stephanie Woodling as Maria, Chad Berlinghieri as Draco, and Todd Robinson as Ralse. I decided to add a slideshow with it because it's more fun to watch that way! The song is 12:27 long, so it's divided in half, but I cut it at a silent section, so you're not missing anything. :D The lyrics used are mostly from the GameBoy Advanced Version, different from the original SNES version.
