Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni[1] (March 6, 1475 February 18, 1564), commonly known as Michelangelo, was an Italian Renaissance painter, sculptor, architect, poet, and engineer. Despite making few forays beyond the arts, his versatility in the disciplines he took up was of such a high order that he is often considered a contender for the title of the archetypal Renaissance man, along with his rival and fellow Italian Leonardo da Vinci. Michelangelo's output in every field during his long life was prodigious; when the sheer volume of correspondence, sketches, and reminiscences that survive is also taken into account, he is the best-documented artist of the 16th century. Two of his best-known works, the Pietà and David, were sculpted before he turned thirty. Despite his low opinion of painting, Michelangelo also created two of the most influential works in fresco in the history of Western art: the scenes from Genesis on the ceiling and The Last Judgment on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. As an architect, Michelangelo pioneered the Mannerist style at the Laurentian Library. At 74 he succeeded Antonio da Sangallo the Younger as the architect of Saint Peter's Basilica. Michelangelo transformed the plan, the western end being finished to Michelangelo's design, the dome being completed after his death with some modification. In a demonstration of Michelangelo's unique standing, he was the first Western artist whose biography was published while he was ...

This is my interview with Pastor Steven L. Anderson of the Faithful Word Baptist Church in Temple, AZ. He has prayed for President Obama to die, calls for the execution of gays and told me it would not be murder if a group of gays and lesbians were gunned down with a machine gun, or if the president were killed. He does not believe the killing of Dr. George Tiller was murder. He also said, after I told him I was gay, that he hopes I "get brain cancer like Ted Kennedy" and die and insisted I must be "molesting children."

This brief documentary was shown at the beginning of "The Agony and the Ecstasy" (Carol Reed, 1965), a film about Michelangelo and the painting of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Although the film focuses on the paintings, this introductory passage highlighted some of Michelangelo's greatest sculptural works.

One of the most mysterious works of art by sculptor and painter Michelangelo is the Madonna and Child. Its considered a sketch, but its still unclear what piece he did it for or if he left it unfinished. Now, this stunning drawing sketched in pencil can be seen until January 10th in one of Romes most popular museums. The work made its way from Florence to Rome for Christmas. Pina Ragioneri Director, Foundation Casa Buonarroti, It represents a very special and profound moment of Michelangelos religious vision, his reflection on the relationship between mother and child, which is not a calm relationship; its an uneasy and dramatic relationship. Domenico Calcagno Secretary General, Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic One should pay close attention to the Virgins expression, because its not one of neglect that is lost in space, rather her look expresses her inner thoughts. She knows there will be suffering which will shape her sons life and her own. According to experts, Michelangelo made the sketch in the year 1525. It was recently restored, and during the process there was proof the artist had doubts about the works composition. At first he sketched the Madonna looking down at the Child, much how Rafael depicted her. But finally, Michelangelo decided to draw the Madonna turning away from the Child. Restorers also discovered that in the XIX century, the drawings margin was cut, perhaps for framing purposes. Its believed the alteration removed the Madonnas veil ...

"The Pietà (1498--1499) by Michelangelo is a marble sculpture in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, the first of a number of works of the same theme by the artist. The statue was commissioned for the French cardinal Jean de Billheres, who was a representative in Rome. The statue was made for the cardinal's funeral monument, but was moved to its current location, the first chapel on the right as one enters the basilica, in the 18th century. "This famous work of art depicts the body of Jesus on the lap of his mother Mary after the Crucifixion. The theme is of Northern origin, popular by that time in France but not yet in Italy. Michelangelo's interpretation of the Pietà is unique to the precedents. It is an important work as it balances the Renaissance ideals of classical beauty with naturalism. The statue is one of the most highly finished works by Michelangelo." The statue is enclosed in bulletproof glass because a deranged man attacked the statue on May 21, 1972, screaming, "I am Jesus Christ!" It should also be noted that this is the only piece of work that Michelangelo ever signed. He signed Mary's sash after he supposedly overheard someone stating that it was the work of another sculptor.

Winston from Alabama, a birther, called in while we were discussing Donald Trumps birther madness. It was fascinating how, even after all the facts were explained, Winston just couldn't let it go. This call is a perfect example of why the birther conspiracy theory will endure. They want to believe, because they hate the president for other reasons -- some of which they may not want to admit, even to themselves -- and it gives them something to grasp onto.
