Sierra Leone - Military Coup of 1971

On March 23, 1971, the Government of Sierra Leone survived a military coup. Historians suggest that Prime Minister Siaka P. Stevens knew of the plan before it went into action against him. Coup organizer, Army Commander John Amadu Bangura, was arrested while two assassination attempts took place against Stevens. Bangura was executed for treason in Freetown after the failed assault. The following broadcasts were recorded live from Radio Sierra Leone beginning with John Bangura's coup announcement on March 23, 1971. These radio announcements were recorded by Ted W. Cox on a cassette tape recorder in his home in Bo Town, Sierra Leone, in 1971.

The Overthrow of Democratic Chile Part 1 (Salvador Allende)

The 1973 Chilean coup d'état was a watershed event in the history of Chile and the Cold War. On 11 September 1973, the democratically elected President Salvador Allende was overthrown in a coup d'état organised by the Chilean military. A military junta took control of the government, composed of the heads of the Air Force, Navy, Carabineros (police force) and the Army led by General Augusto Pinochet.[1] Pinochet later assumed power and ended Allende's democratically elected Popular Unity government.[2][3] During the air raids and ground attacks that preceded the coup, Allende gave his last speech where he vowed to stay in the presidential palace.[4] Direct witness accounts of his death agree that he committed suicide in the presidential palace.[5][6] After the coup Pinochet established a military dictatorship that ruled Chile until 1990 and that was marked by severe human rights violations. A weak insurgence movement against the Pinochet government was maintained inside Chile by elements sympathetic to the former Allende government.

DISCLAIMER: this video is not mine Subscribe now to keep updated on the latest developments. The Congo Crisis (19601966) was a period of turmoil in the First Republic of the Congo that began with national independence from Belgium and ended with the seizing of power by Joseph Mobutu. At various points it had the characteristics of anti-colonial struggle, a secessionist war with the province of Katanga, a United Nations peacekeeping operation, and a Cold War proxy battle between the United States and the Soviet Union. The Crisis caused the death of some 100000 people. It led to the assassination of Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba, as well as a traumatic setback to the United Nations following the death of UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjöld in a plane crash as he sought to mediate.

The claims come as progressive and indigenous organizations revive the patterns of the US response and handling of the military coup in Honduras. Aside from alleging US intervention in Ecuador, there is also a number of US agencies and NGO's that have been pushing for 'democracy promotion' in Ecuador, aiding and supporting that the opposition which has close links to former Ecuadorian President Lucio Gutierrez. Manuel Zelaya Discusses the WikiLeaks Cables About the US Ties to the Honduran Military Coup

DemocracyNow.org - In an exclusive interview, Democracy Now! talks withousted Honduran president, Manuel Zelaya, about the military coup d'edtat against in June 2009. He discusses what he learned about the coup after WikiLeaks published classified US diplomatic cables about Honduras. Zelaya talks about why he believes the United States was behind the coup, and what exactly happened on June 28, 2009, when hooded Honduran soldiers kidnapped him at gunpoint and put him on a plane to Costa Rica, stopping to refuel at Palmerola, the US military base in Honduras. "This coup d'etat was made by the right-wing of the United States," Zelaya says. "The US State Department has always denied, and continues to deny, their any ties with the government with the coup d'etat. Nevertheless, all of the proof incriminates the US government. And all of the actions that were taken by the de facto regime, or the contista regime which are those who carried out the coup. The Other 9/11 - Chile - Coup d'état - September 11, 1973

On September 11, 1973 a military coup was started by General Augusto Pinochet that ousted the democratically elected President Salvador Allende of Chile. Allende's was the first democratically elected Marxist government in the world. This documentary produced by BBC Four is a chronicle of the event from witnesses and archive footage. A chilling and moving account of the day by perpetrators, as well as those at receiving end, who survived to tell this story of a defining moment in Chile's history. It changed Chile forever. It is the only full length (almost 1 hour) documentary in English on it. Also, it is the only documentary that takes into account both sides of the story.

Fiji's Military May be Planning A Coup

CHAN: There is clear evidence Fiji's military chief is planning a coup to overthrow the government. Commander Frank Bainimarama threatens to remove the government if it doesn¡¯t drop several upcoming bills. STORY: This is a threat that has Fijian Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase worried. Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer shares that view, speaking to Qarase about the military chief's plans against the government scheduled for two weeks time. [Alexander Downer, Australian Foreign Minister]: "There's clear evidence he's planning a coup in the next couple of weeks, he made a public statement along those lines yesterday." Rumours of a fourth coup since 1987 have swirled through Fiji for the past two months. Bainimarama has repeatedly threatened the Fijian Government and issued a list of demands described as non-negotiable. This includes dropping the amnesty bill by the time he returns from a two-week trip to New Zealand. [Alexander Downer, Australian Foreign Minister]: "He still seems intent on returning to Fiji and at some point overthrowing through military means the elected government of Fiji." Bainimarama's threats have alarmed Australia, which sent two warships towards Fiji this month just in case. Local media reports say the capital Suva is tense. Police Commissioner Andrew Hughes is close to laying sedition charges against Bainimarama over his threats. Not surprisingly, the list of demands also includes Hughes' removal. September 11th, 1973

Footage from the 2004 Chilean movie "Machuca" On september 11th, 1973, A US government (and corporation) backed military coup in Chile ousted democratically elected President Salvador Allende and ended South America's oldest constitutional democracy. Allende was considered the worlds first democratically elected marxist leader and embarked on far reaching social and economic reforms in chile. This led to hostilities with Chiles wealthy elite as well as the united states. After the coup, the military maintained control of Chile under the leadership of General Augusto Pinochet, one of history's most infamous dictators. During his authoritarian right-wing rule, thousands died and countless more imprisoned for both their political beliefs, and their economic class. Chile remained in this dark shadow until a new government was formed in 1990. declassified US documents have revealed that the Chilean military was both supported and funded by the US government in the coup. (en.wikipedia.org The American Company ITT has also been found to have assisted in the coupe financially to protect their economic interests. I believe this is one of the more important (and overlooked) moments in both US and world history. I hope you all learn something from this video. And I hope that you realize that regardless of your political leanings, what happened in Chile in 1973 was wrong, and nothing like that should ever happen again.

The 12.12 Military Insurrection scene in the Korean TV-Series "The 5th Republic"

"The 12.12 Military Insurrection (12.12 사태 / 12.12 군사반란)" was a military coup d'état which took place on December 12, 1979 in South Korea. Republic of Korea Army Lieutenant General Chun Doo-hwan(대한민국 육군소장 전두환), Defense Security Commander(보안사령관), acting without authorization from Acting President Choi Kyu-ha(최규하), ordered the arrest of General Jeong Seung-hwa(정승화), ROK Army Chief of Staff(육군참모총장), on allegations of involvement in the assassination of President Park Chung Hee(박정희). This led to a bloody shoot-out at the Army Headquarters and the Ministry of Defense. By the next morning, Chun and not only his fellow eleventh class military academy graduates such as Major General Roh Tae-woo(노태우 소장), and, but also tenth class graduates, such as Lieutenant General Hwang Yeong-shi(황영시 중장), Lieutenant General Yoo Hak-seong(유학성 중장) and Lieutenant General Cha Kyu-heon(차규헌 중장) and more.. Chun was supported in the coup and the subsequent consolidation of power by the powerful private club of military officials called "Hanahoe Club(하나회)". The coup ended the Fourth Republic of South Korea and led to the Fifth Republic(제 5공화국) of South Korea. This video includes my favorite scene of the Korean TV-Series "The 5th Republic (제 5공화국)" in 2005 by MBC. The scene describes The 12.12 Military Insurrection.
