This was my adventure for 2007, flying the L-39 military jet on October 8 in Burbank, California. Dave Riggs was the pilot and allowed me to fly to the Edwards AFB canyons and do some rolls. He flew through the canyons at 90 degree angles (think Star Wars) and flew at 0.8 Mach (750 km/h) 6 FEET off the deck! It was a 45 minute thrill of a lifetime.

The flying wing took off at 2:09 pm PST and flew for 29 minutes. The UAV climbed to an altitude of 5000 feet, flew several racetrack-type patterns, and landed safely at 2:38 pm Northrop says the flight provided test data to verify and validate system software for guidance and navigation, and the aerodynamic control of the tailless design. The aircraft will remain at Edwards AFB for flight envelope expansion before moving its test program to Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md., later in 2011. There, the system will undergo tests to validate its readiness to begin testing in the maritime and carrier environment. The X-47 is being prepared for carrier trials in 2013.

It was designed as a lightweight fighter based on the Mirage III in the late 1970s for the French Air Force. The Mirage 2000 evolved into a successful multirole aircraft with several variants developed. The variants include the Mirage 2000N and 2000D strike variants, the improved Mirage 2000-5 and several export variants. Over 600 aircraft were built and it is in service in nine countries as of 2009. The Mirage 2000 features a low-set thin delta wing with cambered section, 58 degrees leading-edge sweep (4 at the exit wing border) and moderately blended root; area-ruled; two small canard wings, fixed, placed just behind the air intakes. The flight commands on the wing are: four elevons (+15/-30°), four slats, four airbrakes (2 above and 2 below each wing).
