Can you believe I finally got my hands on a MIni-14? Pretty nifty little gun - where the heck have I been all these years! Actually, I forget to mention it in the video, but a friend brought over a full-auto Mini-14 about 20 years ago that I fired. It was stainless with a folding stock. I still have a deep hole in the head of one of my turkeys from firing full-auto across the hill with it. :-)

It's built like a tank and costs around $650 in 2010. That's the high value of the now-improved Mini-14 "Tactical" offers. Model #5847 is reviewed here but its representative of the whole Ruger Mini-14 Tactical and Ranch rifle lineup. Some will discount the Mini as a viable tactical choice, saying that it is wildly inaccurate and cannot be depended upon for hard use. The accuracy criticisms held some truth as the older Mini-14s (and their poor quality, pencil-thin barrels) often had heat-stringing issues and about 4-7 MOA accuracy (with rack-grade ammunition). In this thorough Nutnfancy review of Mini-14 Tactical model (and NRA Model providing more data points), I cut through this chaff and attempt to get to the truth. Fact is, with factory Ruger mags or other high quality options (discussed), the fixed-piston Mini-14 is has been a durable and ultra-reliable rifle (when used with good mags), proven in my own shooting since 1983. Based on the battle-proven M1 Garand action, the rotating open bolt design is tolerant of mud, water, and dust and keeps shucking, often when other gun systems have shut down in tough conditions. Redemption for the Tapco Mini-14 magazine! As I had stated in my June 2010 criticisms of the Gen 1 magazine, I had complete confidence that Tapco would correct the issues. Collaborating directly with Tapco, the is the result. Welcome to the best magazine in the world for the Mini-14: Tapco GEN 2s. The best improvement is the steel lug strapped that I had called for in my initial review. It's a now a reality! This provides excellent durability and gives a rock solid lockup equal to that of the Ruger factory steel Mini-14 mags. Improved and more rigid polymers, feed lips, and body are also part of the Gen 2 makeup. And they only weigh 5.2 ounces, almost half that of the still excellent but brick-heavy 9.0 ounce factory 30 rounders! A minor downside still persists: these still don't like steel cased ammunition and hiccups will occur with it. Perhaps for most guys, this isn't a big deal as brass is used for more serious work. But with brass ammunition in 100s of rounds fired (shown), this Gen 2 Tapco mag rules the roost. Tapco Product Manager and his team are to be congratulated for seeing this project through, listening to the TNP audience, and thus created a work of art feeding device for the Mini-14. With a new set of standard sights on the Mini 14 and not wanting you use the big guns much I took out my mini 14 and a couple hundred rounds of ammo, at 300yds we found out it was shooting high, and so I had to adjust. With the sun making everything seem all the better I tried shooting from kneeling and standing and found that the weight of the rifle (or lack of it) really helped me. I have been told the mini 14 is useless after a 100yds, well I took it to 600 with without being correctly sighted in and using mediocre ammo I managed to achieve reasnoble groups. Rock on the Mini 14!

It only took me 28 years to finally get a really nice trigger in a Mini-14. It was something I always wanted to do but never go around to do doing...until now! Here experienced Impact Guns gunsmith Terry Gardner (call sign from me: "Yoda G") opens up his shop and candidly shows his technique on achieving a crisp, 2-stage 3.5 lb trigger pull on this Mini-14 Tactical model. Don't kid yourself though. While Terry makes it look easy and downplays the difficulty, there will be many opportunities for you to dick it up if you try it yourself (I've learned this on other guns myself). Without the over-travel stop, the cost is $65, shipping of your trigger group not included. Is it worth it? Absolutely. In hard cored Nutnfancy RunNGuns, this little Mini-14 Tactical (later DuraCoated in "Sagebrush" color by me) rocked out some impressive scores (results shown). Will it compensate for your bad technique? Nope. Trigger and breath control are always key to connecting accurately, stress or no stress. But this trigger job will make it easier to fire quicker and connect more readily at extended ranges (200 yds for example). And just as important, it will increase your pride of ownership in your Mini and impress your friends too. Some disappointing performance from the new Tapco Gen 1 Mini-14 polymer mags. I think the performance will be improved with future iterations but the feed performance, wobbly fit, and difficult mag well insertion (when full) all need to be corrected. Last night I got my new NRA Ruger Mini-14 from my FFL dealer and took it to the NRA Range. Pretty decent rifle right out of the box getting a lot of center-of-mass shots. Being a left-handed shooter I was happy to see that no brass ejected across my field of vision. The charging handle worked intuitively with my right hand and overall the rifle felt very solid (especially with that Hogue stock). After working my way through the manual's disassembly instructions I decided to post a visual accompaniment on YouTube. My initial feelings last night were that this gun is far more comfortable than my ARs. The magazine system is not as user friendly as an AR's and required me taking my eyes off target in order to seat the magazine properly. The absense of a flash supressor meant that a little 223 Remington had a lot of BOOM to go with it!
