This is a direct comparison between my Minimoog (1976) and a Creamware Minimax ASB, trying to use the same settings on both instruments and playing them together or one at a time. The video was recorded "live" with two cameras and a Panasonic AVE5 video mixer (I'm switching channels manually between takes) and no edit was applied except the title and the fades in/out. Unfortunately YouTube has destroyed the audio quality so you can't really have a clue of what they sound like. I've uploaded a better quality video on Vimeo (link below). The MiniMax has been housed in a DIY Mini-style cabinet and joined with a 25-keys board, but the project is still unfinished (missing a final painting and the end-block with mod wheels). The DARK TIME is a fantastic analog sequencer. It has MIDI, CV / Gate and also TRIGGER IN / OUT for vintage sequencers or rhythm machines. In my opinion, it is much more comfortable than the Korg SQ-10, which I had. The steps run not just forwards - they also can run backwards or in random. Also a great feature is the quantizer - like on the ARP sequencer. In MIDI mode, the two rows can send at two different MIDI channels. The DOEPFER DARK TIME was originally designed to be used with the DOEPFER DARK ENERGY synth, but you can use it with every synthesizer which has MIDI or CV/GATE. Sometimes (it depends on your synth) you will need a converter or a additional interface (for example: ARP needs +12 volts to trigger the envelopes instead of +5V; Also the Minimoog needs a switch trigger). I always wanted a sequencer like this! I played the Doepfer DARK TIME with ARP ODYSSEY, MINIMOOG, KORG MS-20, KORG MONO/POLY and YAMAHA TQ-5. There is also a sequence, where the Dark Time is synced with a Roland CR-78 (through trigger signals, not MIDI) and controls an ARP Odyssey at the same time.

This video shows the Mini Moog in action. The Minimoog is a monophonic analog synthesizer with an outstanding, excellent sound - the "Moog sound". The modules inside the Minimoog are of the same high quality like those in Moog modulars. I wanted to show, that the Minimoog is also able to produce rather "digital" timbres and "untypical" sounds. I played the Mini with Yamaha ProR3 reverb and Roland DEP-5 for delays.

In 2005, Paul Hoffert, a Canadian musician, composer and co-founder of the Juno Award-winning rock band Lighthouse, donated his Minimoog Model D synthesizer to the Canada Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa. During an April 2011 visit to the Museum's conservation lab, Mr. Hoffert had the opportunity to re-acquaint himself with the instrument.
