Exemplary Architecture Southwell Minster in Nottinghamshire, England, is not as famous as some of Britain's other great medieval churches, and neither is it as large. However, it presents superb examples of both Romanesque or Norman and Gothic architecture in a building that suffered little damage during the turbulent years of the British Reformation, Civil War, and World War II. Construction of the current church building was begun circa 1108, and was essentially completed around 50 years later. The basic layout for churches at that time was the shape of a cross, with the east end as the top, the transepts making the crossing arm, and the nave as the longer extension at the bottom of the cross. The east end held the altar and choir, or quire, which were used by the clergy during daily masses. The nave was accessible to the lay community. Although medieval British churches are basically oriented east to west, they all vary slightly. When a new church was to be built, the patron saint was selected and the altar location laid out. On the saint's day, a line would be surveyed from the position of the rising sun through the altar site and extending in a westerly direction. This was the orientation of the new building. In clerical terms, Southwell Minster is a cathedral; but rather than rummage in ecclesiastical definitions, this essay will look at the architectural styles.

Former Canadian Minister of Defense says that the US government-military have alien technology and are suppressing this technology and keeping the truth away from the public so they can be more easily controlled.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, gave a sermon during General Synod at York Minster Cathedral on 6th July '08. "When Jesus says, "Our yoke is easy and my burden is light", that is what he says, to all of us as individuals, to us as a Synod, to us as a Church, to us as a society, to us as a human world: lay aside the obsession to possess the future, receive the word of promise, here."

Naji Hakim improvising on the old French carol Noel Nouvelet and part of Poulenc's Gloria recorded at the Lincoln Minster Arts Festival in 1993. This was recorded off-air from a BBC Radio 3 broadcast the following year (I think). I remember playing this piece over and over again, loving its construction and the beauty of the Magnificent Father Willis voices. In particular near the beginning the Noel is heard played on the gorgeous 8' Claribel Flute, which has a whistful 'liquid' quality, allied with the gentle Swell strings is exquisite. The organ was one of the last masterpieces of Father Henry Willis, built in 1898, it had a 32' reed added by Willis II in 1903 and Harrisons added pedal dulcianas, choir diapason, mutations and mixture in 1960 but left it tonally unchanged. It was overhauled again in 1998. The great, choir, solo and parts of the pedal are in the main case, but the swell and pedal 32s are in the north triforium. Without doubt one of my favourite organs, it has a chameleon qualities, able to sound very English, and very French when needed. It is perhaps dangerous to listen back to an improvisation, something created in the moment and then left to the ether, but when you have great skill and ability such as demonstrated here, repeated listening reveals both structure and form Hakim has given to these two themes, and created new music.
