Im taking my camera and my pencil and plan on producing both a video for YouTube and a review for this forum. I love my camera and my pencil because sometimes they are a great excuse to get out of my comfort zone and do something I might not normally do if I didnt have a camera or a pencil in my hand. I innocently stumbled upon the music of Mirah one dark December morning a little over four years ago. She lives in San Francisco or a small town in Washington. No one seems to know for sure. It doesnt really matter. In 2006 Mirah had just released new album on K Records called "joyride: remixes." My favorite song is "La Familia." Mirah has a new album called "(a)spera." Im sorry to report its been really hard to find a copy. I read that "(a)spera" is a departure for her - something different. Mirah works solo a lot; perhaps tonight will be with a band. I hope this doesnt sound like a gross generalization, but Mirahs small and adoring worldwide audience is made up mostly of young women (she is openly gay), so Im a little apprehensive that my presence there tonight will not go unnoticed. Google Tech Talk July 28, 2010 Presented by Charles Oliver Nutter and John Woodell. ABSTRACT Much has been made of having more expressive languages for the JVM. The recent explosion of interest in alternative JVM languages has shown there's a need for something better. But have Scala, Groovy, Fantom achieved this goal? We'll look at Mirah, which attempts to implement Ruby's apparent features directly atop JVM types and code. In each case there have been gains and losses. Ruby often provides beautiful abstractions, but sometimes requires odd things of the JVM that influence performance. The dynamic capabilities are incredibly expressive, but we often need more static structure to enforce typing guarantees or integrate with the platform. On top of all this, much of Ruby's dynamism makes it very difficult to optimize on the JVM. Can we get those features in another way? Mirah may be one answer. It takes as a starting point the "apparent features" of Ruby, and as an end point the basic structures of the JVM, and attempts to tie them directly together. With a fairly simple compiler, Mirah can almost mimic the most common Ruby abstractions, but with static typing guarantees and no runtime library requirements. It provides a Ruby-like way to write Java, the ultimate goal of so many JVM languages. Sunday night, February 21, 2010, was breezy and cool and the threat of rain hung heavy in the air. But nothing was going to dampen my sprits that night because I was in Hollywood to catch Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn performing at the Bootleg Theater. Mirah is a 35-year-old indie singer/songwriter with ties to the bay area and Pacific Northwest...a true individual in a world of blurred individuality. Mirah possess what the Los Angeles Times recently described as a "pristine alto," and I jumped at the opportunity to see her perform live (her last LA appearance was last April at The Echo to debut her album "(a)spera"). I arrived about two hours early. I'd never been to the Silverlake district and wanted to hangout a little. I was, to say the least, taken aback by the Bootleg Theater. The Bootleg is one of dozens of little theaters that dot the ragged LA landscape. To describe it as stark is a flagrant understatement. The Bootleg Theater is nothing more than four bare walls, a floor, and a rickety little stage. In fact, due to its lack of seating, décor, and lighting, The Bootleg has all the quaint ambiance of a World War II British air raid shelter. With time on my hands and no place to sit, I decided to have a walk around the neighborhood and find a quiet bar to hibernate in. It wasnt difficult. I've forgotten the name of the little place, but after downing five or six Rusty Nails (prepared by Pablo de la Cruz, the extraordinarily generous barkeep) it was time to wander back to <b>...</b>
