Il MITTELEUROPA ENSEMBLE è stato il primo gruppo in Italia che ha studiato l'idioma della tradizione popolare della musica ebraica in un'ottica jazzistica, quella delle feste ebraiche dell'Est Europa, conosciuta come Klezmer e se ne è impadronito, apportandovi sensibilità jazzistiche e contemporanee, combinando identità e misticismo ebraico con lo spirito del nostro tempo e diventando, nel campo della musica jazz nazionale, una delle più originali ed apprezzate formazioni della musica klezmer. Il gruppo, riunitosi attorno alla figura del trombettista Mario Fragiacomo (che in passato aveva collaborato per molti anni con la TheaterOrchestra di Moni Ovadia), è il simbolo italiano di quel klezmer che fonde le tradizioni ashkenazite con le influenze dell'avanguardia jazzistica. L'essenza è quella di una musica di festa ma allo stesso tempo anche di dolore, che celebra la natura estatica delle sonorità yiddish e crea riflessioni e turbamenti.
