Allegretto (click to go at 6:00 min). Presto agitato (click to go at 8:05 min). Adagio sostenuto The first movement, in C♯ minor, is written in an approximate truncated sonata form. The movement opens with an octave in the left hand and a triplet figuration in the right. A melody that Hector Berlioz called a "lamentation", mostly by the right hand, is played against an accompanying ostinato triplet rhythm, simultaneously played by the right hand. The movement is played pianissimo or "very quietly", and the loudest it gets is mezzo forte or "moderately loud". The adagio sostenuto has made a powerful impression on many listeners; for instance, Berlioz said of it that it "is one of those poems that human language does not know how to qualify. The work was very popular in Beethoven's day, to the point of exasperating the composer himself, who remarked to Carl Czerny, "Surely I've written better things. This mystifying piece whose beauty somewhat haunts, is unusual in not being accompanied with any of my photographs. For perhaps obvious reasons, my rather humble camera has not been able to capture any video-worthy shots of the Moon. Also, as this well-known piece conjures up so many different images for people, I decided to choose one online picture similar to my own interpretation of the piece. Formally known as Piano Sonata No.14, it wasn't until 1832, 31 years after completion that a critic compared the piece to moonlight shining upon Lake Lucerne (Germany). The piece however is rumoured to be a dedication to the composer's pupil, Countess Giulietta Guicciardi, whom he had loved. Beethoven himself gave the sonata the name "Quasi una Fantasia" (or "Almost a Fantasy") as it didn't follow the conventional tempo of its movements. Critic, Paul Bekker described this as, "The opening sonata-allegro movement gave the work a definite character from the beginning... which succeeding movements could supplement but not change. Beethoven rebelled against this determinative quality in the first movement. He wanted a prelude, an introduction, not a proposition." Whatever your interpretation of this piece, it's mystery, or fantasy quality, has enabled it to be just as poignant to the listener today, as it was over 200 years ago.

Played on Yamaha P85 MIDI out to Pianoteq v2.3 "C2 Grand". This interpretation has major influence from Vladimir Horowitz. The piece is relatively easy to memorise and is technically undemanding. It is precisely due to this reason that it is overplayed while being underappreciated for its potential to show the pianist's level of dedication or lack thereof to the art of music; Moonlight movement 1 will always sound better played slower if done in less than 5m45s. Impatience erodes what it can truly offer to the audience and pianist, which are effectively opportunities to demonstrate and enjoy a mastery of poetic discretion and rubato--this is usually the case for slow pieces. This piece includes many repeated and eventually familiar sequences--my challenge and enjoyment has been in making them sound slightly different every time. The right hand is almost always playing an octave--the mark of legends (Kempff/Horowitz) is the ability to play the pinky note louder than the thumb while ensuring both keys are hammered at the same time, which provides a clear melody over the repeating triads. My favourite chord is at 3:22. I learned to play this piece because I wanted to hear the Moonlight Sonata played in a way that I most prefer to hear. If you enjoyed it, I'm glad.

Eric Henderson spent several years in Spain learning the intricacies of the classical guitar, while playing as much as 12 hours a day. In addition to studying with Andres Segovia, Henderson has studied guitar with Christopher Parkening, Angel Romero, Ernesto Bitetti, Emilio Pujol and Antonia Morales. He has spent time studying Baroque interpretation with Ton Koopman and Henk Dekker, and theory and composition with Aureo Hererro. While Eric was in Spain he also had the honor of studying with the great composer Federico Moreno Torroba, perfecting the interpretation of Torrobas Sonatina in A.
