French Polynesia covers over two million square miles of the South Pacific Ocean and is comprised of 118 islands spread over five great archipelagos. Many islands are crowned with jagged peaks while others just barely float above the breaking waves. Total land mass of all the islands equals an area slightly larger than the state of Rhode Island, but is spread over a region of the Pacific as large as Western Europe. The three archipelagos most sought by visitors are the Society Islands, comprised of Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, Huahine, Raiatea and Taha'a; The Tuamotu Atolls or "Tahiti's Strand of Pearls", include the atolls of Rangiroa, Manihi, Tikehau, and Fakarava; and the Marquesas. The two other archipelagos, the Austral Islands and the Gambier Islands, lie to the south and the southeast, respectively, of the Society Islands. While very few travelers venture to these remote islands, those that do are not disappointed by the pristine environment. Legendary Tahiti has long been the vision of "la Nouvelle Cythere," the earthly paradise. Explorers Wallis, Bougainville, and Cook all told of a land of spellbinding beauty and enchantment, where the climate was delightful, hazardous insects unknown, and the natives welcoming. Rousseau's "noble savage" had been found! A few years later, Fletcher Christian and Captain Bligh's drama of sin and retribution culminated among Tahiti and her islands. The list of famous authors who traveled here and wrote of the region reads like a <b>...</b>

Sun Princess Tahiti Papeete and Moorea
The last journey of the Sun Princess before she relocated to Australia. This trip from Seattle to Sydney in Sept/October 2007 took in several of the Pacific islands, including Tahiti and the Cook Islands. From Papeete we took the ferry to the island of Moorea, then filmed the view of the coast from the local bus.

Just a quick tour of my awesome garden bungalow in Moorea. Pearl the cute black and white kitty gave us a tour the first night there, so she was well fed, while we were there. We called her Pearl after the Tahitian pearl, she made it so we didn't want to leave.

The RFO Marathon Race is the first tahitian V6 outrigger canoe competition of the year, April 9, 2011, from Tahiti to Moorea and back. Tamarii Maupiti Vaa, a small outfit from an island with about 1200 people, takes on the big clubs from Tahiti.

Moorea lemon shark scuba dive
November 2005. Valley of the Lemon Sharks (Vallee des Requins Citron), Moorea, near Tahiti, French Polynesia (Polynésie Français). Scuba dive with lemon shark, who eats tuna head that had been placed under coral ledge. Video is purposely silent because camera made a screeching noise throughout. Other sharks are black tipped reef sharks. Smaller fish hang around in hopes of snagging some scraps as the big guy chomps up his lunch, chasing him as he takes the tuna head to another location to enjoy. Bon appetit!

Underwater video of humpback whales in Moorea
This is an underwater video of seven (at least) humpback whales I videoed in Moorea French Polynesia on Sept 13, 2006. They were within 40 ft of us while we snorkeled with them, they were all about 50 ft long or so. The water depth was 400+ ft. I used the Olympus 720 waterproof digital camera. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity to swim with these awesome cetaceans, which oddly seemed very interested in deeply circling our small white-bottomed boat. You can hear the whale noises in the background.

Filmed on Moorea in Cook's Bay late in 1968, and shown during the '69 Super Bowl with Joe Namath and the miracle New York Jets, this series of 'I'd Walk a Mile for a Camel' are classic, especially this one. We've stayed a few feet from where it was filmed, and is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful places in the world.
