Recorded September 1, 2008. Bergen is the second largest city in Norway, with a population of 252 051. Bergen is an important cultural center in its region and was one of nine European cities honored with the title of European Capital of Culture in 2000. This video begins as I sail down the Byfjorden Fjord and under the Askøy Bridge on the Sea Princess. Bergen is one of the wettest places in the world so the bright sunshine overhead was a nice bonus for this beautiful city. After docking near the city center I started my tour of the city. The first stop on the tour is Fløibanen, a funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen where there are spectacular views of the city. Fløibanen is Bergen's biggest tourist attraction and one of Norway's most visited sights. It is the only funicular cable car for passengers in Scandinavia. I travel up the Col da Tenda on the border between Italy and France in the Maritime Alps. Col de Tende (Italian: Colle di Tenda; elevation 1870 m) is a high mountain pass in the Alps, on the border of France and Italy. It separates the Maritime Alps from the Ligurian Alps. It connects Nice and Tende in Alpes-Maritimes with Cuneo in Piedmont. A railway tunnel inaugurated in 1898 and a road tunnel inaugurated in 1882 run under the pass. The latter tunnel is 3.2 kilometre long and is among the oldest long road tunnels. In San Gimignano this procedure was taken to extremes as individual families sought to built towers as high as they could in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Once around 20 towers stood, today there are still 13 with the highest being 54 metres in height. San Gimignano was founded around 2300 years ago by the Etruscans. In the tenth century CE it took the name of its bishop Saint Geminianus who had allegedly successful defended the town from Attila the Hun some 500 years earlier. However the town rose to fame as a stopping point on the medieval tourist route leading to Rome called the via Francigena. This was further added by trade largely in agricultural products.It achieved independence from the Bishops of Volterra in 1199 although disputes betweent Guelphs and Ghibellines disturbed the peace. Its most famous visit occured on 8 May 1300 when Dante Alighieri called as the ambassador of the Guelph League in Tuscany.The black plague finished the town's prosperity when it killed a large amount of people in 1348. (One third of the population of Europe were killed by the disease.) Five years later it was annexed by Florence.
