As leading lights in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal they had a brief period of UK Top 40 success in the early 1980s, and also tasted success in Europe and Japan. They still tour heavily and regularly. Their latest (in support of The Inner Sanctum album) tour is their largest in the UK since the early 1980s. Until this, the band's fame had been focused largely in Germany for many years. There is another incarnation of Saxon featuring two former band members who hold the legal rights to the name - "Oliver/Dawson Saxon". Saxon began with a lineup of Peter "Biff" Byford on vocals, Paul Quinn and Graham Oliver on guitars, Steve "Ponce" Dawson on bass and drummer Pete "Frank" Gill. Early in their career the band changed their name from Son of a Bitch to Saxon, and gained support slots on tour with more established bands such as Motörhead. In 1979 the band signed to the Carrere record label and released their eponymous debut album. Four weeks of riding through the most beautiful places northern Europe has to offer. Northern Europe (Scandinavia and adjoining north-western part of Russia) is a place full of history and interesting places. Vast and sparsely populated landscapes, harsh climate and great nature formed people and culture and make this one of the prime destinations for motorcycle travel in Europe. From the taiga in russian Karelia to Kola Peninsula and Murmansk, through the sparse landscapes of northern Norway between Kirkenes, Hamningberg and the famous Nordkapp. From the northernmost road on continental Europe through finnish and swedish Lapland on to the Lofoten and along the norwegian coast through fjords and mountains. You have to see this place for yourself! If you want to make a similar trip or ride parts of my route, here is what my route looked like: After riding the car train (DB Autozug) from Lörrach to Hamburg, the ferry from Germany (Travemünde) brought me to Helsinki, where I headed east towards the russian border - to Санкт Петербург (Saint-Petersburg). After sightseeing for a day, I headed north on the Magistrale 18 (Кола) through Петрозаводск (Petrozavodsk), Медвежьегорск (Medvezhyegorsk ) and Мончегорск (Monchegorsk) and arrived in Murmansk (Мурманск) a few days later. Just picked up my new OSBE Rufus XXL motorcycle helmet today that I got off eBay, so made this quick "unboxing" video. The similarities between this helmet an actual fighter pilot helmet is probably the main reason why I bought it in the first place. It is one kickass looking helmet. Complies with ECE 22.05 helmet safety laws in Europe, which means it's allowed here in Canada by DOT or Snell standards. (The YouTube captions will make you laugh!) NOT recommended for long distance road trips, high-speed travel, or windy days. The mask isn't held on securely so it may expose your mouth and chin during windy rides. As I experienced recently, the mask part of the helmet kept blowing open by the 100 km/h winds, so I kept getting bombarded by dirt/sand/pebbles.

NOTE: I change position mid-bend on this upload only to get into position for example's sake, I never change position mid-bend normally......OK..Here's a response to a couple of questions about whether HANGING OFF (as opposed to moving body position a little) helps cornering on public roads. Basically the faster you go, the stronger the gyroscopic effect is on the steering. Leaning off is only really needed whilst riding too fast for road conditions (check my profile page pics of me on the track as an example) at slower speeds, countersteering is all you need. Most importantly, be comfortable, relax and be safe.
