As the Lebanese Army is still caught up in a fresh round of clashes in northern Lebanon, the fear of al-Qaeda elements triggering more violence seems to be growing. Lebanese General Security Chief Abbas Ibrahim has confirmed that Shadi al-Mawlawi who was arrested in Tripoly last Saturday is allegedly a founder of a terrorist cell in Lebanon, believed to have links to al-Qaeda network. Mawlawi's arrest triggered violent clashes in Tripoli which lasted three days and left nine people dead and more than 90 wounded. These clashes continue to this day while the terrorist groups in the area have threatened to escalate their movements. This comes as House Speaker Nabih Berri confirmed that several politicians are threatened to be targeted by extremist groups. One Lebanese daily had said earlier that these groups "are backed by major intelligence agencies that have dedicated billions of dollars for them." Members of the March coalition considered these claims baseless. The March 14th coalition has been a stark advocate of the Syrian opposition. Lebanese authorities have seized loads of armaments allegedly being smuggled into Syria mainly to the Syrian armed groups. Yet analysts believe that the events in Syria are being extended into Lebanon mainly since several sides in the region specifically Israel want to weaken Syria and its allies in the region.
