Post-Punk Icon Joe Jackson on The Nanny State, Smoking Bans, & His Next Musical Adventure

"A smoking ban in bars is saying that adult citizens are not allowed to use a legal substance even though they're very highly taxed for doing so in a place that is private property," explains Joe Jackson, the hitmeister behind indelible tunes such as "Look Sharp!," "Is She Really Going Out With Him?," and, yes, "(Everything Gives You) Cancer." Jackson's not a smoker himself but he insists that smoking bans and other for-your-own-good restrictions infantalize us all and challenge basic concepts of freedom. "You're throwing out the window the property right of the owner of that establishment, freedom of choice, a lot of things, compared to a health risk [from second- and third-hand smoke] that is really unproven." Jackson's antipathy for the creeping nanny state in his native England and his longtime home of New York City led him to write a meticulously researched essay called "Smoking, Lies and The Nanny State." It also led him to finally flee New York and London, setting up residence in Berlin because there he at least feels like he is relatively "free" and "treated like an adult." Jackson sat down with Reason.tv's Nick Gillespie and talked about his frustrations as an anti-smoking ban activist, the "gathering storm of prohibitionism," and the bold and risky evolutions of his signature musical style over the years. Runs about 7.30 minutes. Shot by Meredith Bragg, Jim Epstein and Anthony L. Fisher. Edited by Anthony L. Fisher. Visit Reason.tv for downloadable versions, and ...

'Nanny State' Elementary School Bans Recess Sports Balls for child "safety"

Another sad example about how schools and parents of today are coddling children to the point of absurdity. A Toronto school banned the use of any hard balls because an ADULT got hit in the head. After over 100 years of kids being able to play and learn through recess, we all of a sudden must treat kids like little whooses because society is afraid to let kids learn on their own.

12 Yr. Old ARRESTED For Not Wearing Helmet At Memphis TN Skate Park. Nanny State In Action.

TO JOIN TPHS OFFICIAL VOICE CHAT add me as a friend on www.facebook.com/TTT1776, then go to my "notes" on my facebook profile page for further instructions. Remember when society believed that parents should raise their children instead of the government? Remember when society had dignity and believed that people were grown ups, able to make their own life choices? Yeah me ether, not in my life time. Today's story comes out of Memphis TN, this is where 12 year old William Faulhaber lived and not to long ago William had his father drop him off at a new local government ran skat park. How wonderful for the government to force the masses to pay for this park with the threat of violence (how it does everything) and then treat the forced customers of the park like cattle that has no rights. This is what happened to poor William who forgot his helmet at the park that day and didn't feel like calling up his father to come drop it off to him. So how does our government deal with 12 year olds that don't follow posted rules (but not laws), the same way it does everything, with men in blue costumes that believes he has the right to bring force on to people. William is now facing charges of trespassing and will soon face a judge. Apparently our society believes in the government nanny state so much that they have no problem giving 12 year olds daring to disobey the authority of signs a criminal record. Hans, William's father has gone on record as being baffled that law enforcement ...

North Carolina Bans Rare Burgers! Nanny of the Month (May 2011)

May's biggest busybodies are taking it to poker players and teen tanners, but the nation's top nag has lovers of pink-in-the-middle burgers seeing red. In a stunning blow to all that is juicy and delicious, the Tar Heel state actually prohibits restaurants from serving rare or medium-rare hamburgers. And if this crime against meat freedom seems especially un-American, keep in mind that it comes from the same state that once banned Old Glory at public rallies. www.youtube.com Presenting Reason.tv's Nanny of the Month for May 2011: Terry Pierce of the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources! Nanny State: NYC bans smoking in public areas

New York's new smoking ban has gone into effect that says it's now illegal to smoke in any of NYC's public parks, beaches, boardwalks, and promenades. Is this an example of a nanny state at its worst? Banning smoking, for your own good? Or is it a public health issue that most Americans support? Reason's Jacob Sullum, author of the book "For Your Own Good" discusses.

Light Bulbs vs. The Nanny State

In September, the European Union banned the sale of 100-watt incandescent light bulbs, with lawbreakers facing up to $70000 in fines. Over the next few years, bans on lower-wattage bulbs kick in. In the United States, similar legislation comes into play in 2012. The idea is to kickstart the market for compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), which use less energy than conventional incandescents. Although CFLs present any number of problems (even beyond a much higher initial cost), governments all over the globe are determined to make them the new standard. Invented in its modern form by Thomas Edison in 1879, the light bulb became synonymous with a brilliant idea. Now, it seems, it's just one more symbol of a nanny state that increasingly dictates more choices in our public and private lives. "Light bulbs vs. The Nanny State" is produced by Meredith Bragg and Nick Gillespie. Approximately two minutes. Go to reason.tv for embed code and downloadable versions.

EU Bans Free-Range Kids! Nanny of the Month October 2011!

Turns out minding other people's business is a worldwide affliction, and in this very special edition of Nanny of the Month, we explore nannyism across the pond. Fat taxes are all the rage in Europe. After the skinny Danes slapped a tax on foods high in saturated fats, other European pols—including British Prime Minister David Cameron—have considered following suit. And in Australia's Northern Territory, they're bringing alcohol prohibition back—incrementally, that is—by barring problem drinkers from buying grog. What could possibly go wrong! But in the first-ever Nanny of the Month Global Edition, top dishonors go to the European Union's control freaks who have cracked down on free-range kids, slapping regulations on everything from baby rattlers (which have brand-new noise restrictions) to blowing up balloons (not to be done by tots under age eight!). Approximately 1.20 minutes. "Nanny of the Month" is written and produced by Ted Balaker. Opening animation by Meredith Bragg. Getting Your Voice Heard Fighting The Nanny State

first free style vid. pretty rough but here it is. CA Law SB798 will destroy the Airsoft industry in California. SB798 will result in the embargo of all high quality airsoft guns into the state of California; hence destroying far too many jobs that we as a state and nation cannot afford to lose. SB798 will require all airsoft guns to have a bright red or orange muzzle and be painted bright colors or be made of clear plastic. The only clear goal of the law is to require all airsoft guns to look like toys, when in fact they are not and are not sold to minors. SB798 will effectively destroy the entire industry and culture of airsoft. SB798 ideologically contradicts laws already established saying no airsoft guns shall be sold to minors. Airsoft guns are in fact just a class of BB guns. BB guns do not require bright orange muzzles. Making airsoft guns look like toys when they in fact are dangerous can cause serious injury. The bill aims to make airsoft guns safer when it clearly will do the opposite. Big government is once again trying to overstep its boundaries and regulate our lives under the guise of public safety. Crackdowns on Consensual Sex, Veggies, and more! Nanny of the Year (2011)

They touch our lives in so many ways, and Reason.tv kicks off awards season by acknowledging those who have devoted their lives to minding other people's business. Live (to tape) from the fourth floor of the Sepulveda Center in Los Angeles, it's the third annual 2011 Nanny of the Year Awards! These United States have produced many worthy nominees in 2011. Who could forget the city planner who threatened a woman with 93 days behind bars for growing vegetables or the state senator who did his best to outlaw crossing the street while listening to an iPod (shortly before pleading guilty to federal corruption charges). But this year the golden Nanny goes to the Wolverine state pol who's bent on making most any kind of teacher-student sex--not just a fireable offense, but a felony, even if the student is older than age 18 or even if teacher and student are middle-aged. (And, in an apparent attempt to secure nanny gold, our winner is also fighting to force school kids to recite the pledge in front of genuine made-in-America flags.) Presenting Reason.tv's 2011 Nanny of the Year: Michigan State Senator Roger Kahn! Approximately 2.45 minutes. "Nanny of the Year" is written and produced by Ted Balaker, who also hosts. Civil Unrest - Coming to a Neighborhood Near You!

Riots are not just happening in England and the civil unrest there is no longer localized. For now, it has slowed in England, but the surrounding communities have been effected. Reports coming from the area state that there are 16000 police on the streets, which, is a form of martial law, but what is expected when you grow up in a society built up by the idea that the government takes care of you. This is just more evidence that the nanny state is weak and unreliable on so many levels. Then, there have been food riots in China because of soaring runaway inflation and lack of food because of the recent floods there. The Chinese workers are getting fed up with the oppression the face and the inevitable starvation. China has a huge problem. In the last 1000 years China has had a famine in at least one of its provinces every year. The people are showing that they will no longer put up with the regime. And, of course there is the social unrest in Europe. Greece and Italy are facing default. Greece's credit rating is one above a default and analysts are claiming that when, not if, Italy defaults, there will be a decade long depression in Europe. Combine this with the food shortage because of the extremely wet spring and summer seasons and you have a huge catastrophe looming. Finally, in the United States you have the combination of inflation, or as some financial experts are reporting, stagflation (no economic growth plus inflation) food shortages, the rise of the nanny state ...

Rahe argues that overbearing "nanny state" government policies are caused by anxiety over social freedoms. ----- Paul A. Michigan Bar Owners Ban Lawmakers for Banning Smoking! (Nanny of the Month, Aug 2011)

Michigan Bar Owners Ban Lawmakers for Banning Smoking! (Nanny of the Month, Aug 2011) They're banning pet pigs in St, Charles, Missouri (even small, hypoallergenic ones like Pepper!) and Nice Cream in Illinois (even though it's packed with natural ingredients and the owner says its bacterial levels are well below state-approved levels!), but neither of those could claim the top slot because--well, this time Nanny of the Month is doing something different... For the first time ever Nanny of the Month is cheering a ban. That's right, starting September 1, more than 500 Michigan restaurant and bar owners are banning state lawmakers from their establishments. State Senator So-and-so wants a brew? Too bad. Politicians won't be served until they revisit the state's 2010 smoking ban, which, owners say, has devastated business, and left bars like Sporty O'Tooles on the verge of collapse. Exposing Governmental Tactics To Steal Liberty

This video I highlight the various ways through the labeling of "Mental Illness" and "Thought Crimes" they use as a ploy to label people to then hinder their right to bear arms (2nd amendment) and steal various other liberties. There will most likely come a time when they will say if you are "Mentally Ill" you cannot vote. They already decide that you cannot bear arms if you are "Mentally Ill" even if you have committed no crimes and have NO criminal record. The diagnosis is a sham in many cases and takes no less than 15 minutes to ruin the rest of your life. They expand the DSM (Diagnostic Statistical Manual) regularly to invent to illness to label people with and then once that happens POOF your liberties are mostly gone and you are a government slave on SSI (Obama-Nanny-State Care). It may deem you unfit to vote, protect yourself, all your finances are monitored and controlled by the "Nanny State" and they will tell you what medicine and food to eat. Something needs to be done to fight this tyranny. People NEED to voice concern and NOT be complacent. People do need to get active. One person DOES make a difference because it's a chain reaction. Remember all it takes is one spark to start a devastating fire in that ravages whole forest. If one person sparks a fire of truth in one person it spreads to many many people. One person DOES make a difference. Embrace that truth.
