Nano Technology

Nanotechnology, sometimes shortened to nanotech, refers to a field of applied science whose theme is the control of matter on an atomic and molecular scale. Generally nanotechnology deals with structures 100 nanometers or smaller, and involves developing materials or devices within that size. Nanotechnology is an extremely diverse and multidisciplinary field, ranging from novel extensions of conventional device physics, to completely new approaches based upon molecular self-assembly, to developing new materials with dimensions on the nanoscale, or the scale of nothing, even to speculation on whether we can directly control matter on the atomic scale. There has been much debate on the future implications of nanotechnology. Nanotechnology has the potential to create many new materials and devices with wide-ranging applications, such as in medicine, electronics, and energy production. On the other hand, nanotechnology raises many of the same issues as with any introduction of new technology, including concerns about the toxicity and environmental impact of nanomaterials, and their potential effects on global economics, as well as speculation about various doomsday scenarios. These concerns have lead to a debate among advocacy groups and governments on whether special regulation of nanotechnology is warranted.

Dr. Wade Adams is the Director of the Smalley Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology at Rice University. The Institute is devoted to the development of new innovations on the nanometer scale. Some of the institute's current thrusts include research in carbon nanotubes, medical applications of nanoparticles, nanoporous membranes, molecular computing, and nanoshell diagnostic and therapeutic applications. Wade was appointed a senior scientist (ST) in the Materials Directorate of the Wright Laboratory in 1995. Prior to that he was a research leader and in-house research scientist in the directorate. For the past 36 years he has conducted research in polymer physics, concentrating on structure-property relations in high-performance organic materials. He is internationally known for his research in high-performance rigid-rod polymer fibers, X-ray scattering studies of fibers and liquid crystalline films, polymer dispersed liquid crystals, and theoretical studies of ultimate polymer properties.

Dr. Hildy -- Nanotechnology: Legal Aspects

9/28/11 -- One Cell One Light Radio with Dr. Hildegarde Staninger Guest: Dr. Patrick M. Boucher pmboucher.com In this modern age, we are experiencing the greatest technological growth in human history. Since the invention of the micro-chip, computers have become a inescapable and necessary part of our daily lives. From entertainment to health care to communication, we are constantly amazed at the technological advancements of modern times. One of the most controversial of these advancements is that of nanotechnology; the development of materials, devices, or other structures possessing at least one dimension sized from 1 to 100 nanometres, a unit measure that is most commonly used on an atomic level, rendering anything of that scale impossible to see without a microscope. While there are few practical applications of nanotechnology currently in use (scratch-resistant and stain-resistant clothing and material coatings are perhaps the most common), the theoretical applications are nearly endless, as this technology is still being studied and developed. Nanotechnology could be developed to improve medical drugs, allowing them to be delivered to specific cells and reduce side effects; to improve energy efficiency, such as developing a spray-on coating that can act as a solar conductor; tocreating lighter and stronger materials for uses as varied as aircraft construction to athletic shoes. As with any technology in its infancy, there is a debate about the ethical implications ...

Nokia's super hydrophobic nanotechnology at Nokia World 2011

Nokia's latest "super" hydrophobic coating doesn't take half-measures. This new technology binds a layer of nanotech magic to the surface of its devices that literally bounces liquids away. Although we've been told the nanotubes at work here are most effective with water, other liquids (and smudgy fingerprints) should also find the treated surface difficult to latch onto. Due to the thinness of this waterproofing solution, a spokesperson told us here at Nokia World that even the inner workings of a phone could be treated in the same way. No more incidents in the bathroom? Count us in. Check the video after the break for some slo-mo water slippage.

Founded in 1987, NREP is the largest non-governmental environmental education and accrediting organization with in excess of 20000 certified professionals world-wide. NREP's accreditation covers the environmental fields as well as homeland preparedness. Joining Dr. Staninger this week was Michael Edward, who continues to be involved in the research into the health and toxicity problems following the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil disaster. During the first hour, Dr. Staninger and Mr. Edward discussed a paper presented at the conference, bringing to light details about the "fluffy white goo" which appeared in the water and on beaches after remediation in the Gulf of Mexico. At the conference, Dr. Staninger lectured on the topic of Nanotechnology vs. Environmental Technology, which branched over to this week's episode of One Cell One Light™ Radio. Continuing last week's discussion on the ethical implications of nanotechnology, Dr. Staninger discussed with Michael Edward the importance of health workers, environmentalists and safety workers to recognize the difference between emerging nanotechnologies and established hazardous chemicals. New Nano Science Technology 2011 (The Future)

Welcome to the nano scale. Nanoscale is where properties differ significantly from those at a larger scale. The strange world of nanoscience can take you into atoms and beyond the stars. A new horizon has begun for mankind in creating new technologies and one day eradicating diseases. That water bottle that turns urine into drink water could help drought stricken countries, instead of a little water bottle maybe a water tank version? Introduction to Nanoscience What is nanoscience? The word itself is a combination of nano, from the Greek "nanos" (or Latin "nanus"), meaning "Dwarf", and the word "Science." Nano refers to the 10-9 power, or one billionth. In these terms it refers to a meter, or a nanometer, which is on the scale of atomic diameters. For comparison, a human hair is about 100000 nanometers thick! Nanoscience is the study of atoms, molecules, and objects whose size is on the nanometer scale ( 1 - 100 nanometers ). Why is the study of nanoscience different than the same problems on a larger scale? Physics is different on the nanometer scale. Properties not seen on a macroscopic scale now become important- such as quantum mechanical and thermodynamic properties. Rather than working with bulk materials, one works with individual atoms and molecules. By learning about an individual molecule's properties, we can put them together in very well-defined ways to produce new materials with new and amazing characteristics. Why is nanoscience suddenly becoming such a big ...

Innovative Nanotech Engineering Designs

Nanotech, just in time for the holidays at University of Nevada, Reno One-of-a-kind products designed and built by mechanical engineering students RENO, Nev. -- What's on your Christmas list? Solar powered music in your motorcycle helmet, an automated food dish for Fido or a high-performance ski built with nano-materials in the core and solar panels on the tops to power your electronic devices while skiing? While shoppers won't find them in stores, yet, these are just a few of the inventions students in the senior design mechanical engineering class have designed and built for their class project. The class, Concept of Design, integrates new ideas and materials (including nano-materials) into the inventions. Other inventions include a robot delivery system built for Amazon's shipping plant and an innovative dirtbike carrier for a pickup truck. The class is designed as part of a new Energy Efficient Systems and Dynamic Structures mechanical engineering curriculum made possible through a $200000 grant through the National Science Foundation's Nanotechnology Undergraduate Education in Engineering program.
