Chicago prepares for NATO summit

US president Barack Obama's hometown of Chicago is to be the venue of the NATO summit about the future of the foreign forces in Afghanistan, which commences on Sunday. With more than 60 heads of state to attend the summit and tens of thousands of protesters also expected to converge on the city, this is the biggest event in the US state of Illinois since the 1968 Democratic National Convention which ended brutally. Security is a primary concern and Obama's former chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, now the mayor of the city, is tasked with seeing the event through without incident. Bosnia to Libya: 20 years of NATO 'peacemaking'

Two decades ago saw the start of Europe's bloodiest military conflict since the Second World War. The Bosnian War and the break-up of the former Yugoslavia reignited ethnic conflicts between Muslims and Serbs. Over four years, around 100-thousand people were killed, and more than 4 million displaced. The war eventually saw NATO's first-ever peace mission in its history - setting a template for incursions into foreign troublespots. Anti-NATO activist Rick Rozoff believes the Alliance's current interventions make it hard for nations to resolve their conflict themselves. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

Pakistan anger as NATO routes set to reopen

The US and Pakistan are finalising details to reopen NATO supply routes into Afghanistan. The routes were closed six months ago after a US air raid on a Pakistani military post near the Afghan border killed several Pakistani soldiers, causing widespread anger. Most people associated with Pakistan's trucking industry have seen a decline in their business since the routes were halted. They are among the few who are upbeat about the reinstatement. The majority of Pakistanis, however, are in opposition to the move. Al Jazeera's Kamal Hyder reports from Peshawar on the impact of the government's decision to reopen the routes.
