Gasland: Dangers of Natural Gas Extraction (Extended Trailer)

The true costs in health and environmental pollution of hydraulic fracturing are exposed in this amazing documentary by Josh Fox. Everyone needs to know this information. Please support the filmmakers. Visit the website, learn the facts, sign petitions, contact your elected officials, share your story. Buy the DVD for everyone you know. Original Trailer at: www.youtube.com Hydraulic fracturing is common world wide, not just in America, and massively pollutes our fresh water supplies (see my other video on: Water - The Basics of Use, Pollution, and Our Health at: www.youtube.com ). "The largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history has swept across the United States. The Halliburton-developed drilling technology of "fracking" or hydraulic fracturing has unlocked a "Saudia Arabia of natural gas" just beneath us. But is fracking safe? When filmmaker Josh Fox is asked to lease his land for drilling, he embarks on a cross-country odyssey uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination." Natural gas extraction is regulated but with numerous exemptions such as such as: 42 USC 300h(d)(1)(B) [underground injection - exemption for fracturing fluid]. You can check out a US Senate report (released in April 2011) on the chemical contents of these frac'ing fluids at: democrats.energycommerce.house.gov "An estimated 30% to 70% of the frac'ing fluid will resurface, bringing back with it toxic substances that are naturally present in underground oil and gas deposits, as well ...

Hydraulic Fracturing- Shale Natural Gas Extraction

This is an educational video describing the unique process of Hydraulic Fracturing used by the oil and gas industry today. Hydraulic Fracturing is a method used to extract natural gas trapped inside shale deposits stored deep underground using controlled explosives and high pressured liquid to create fractures allowing for the flow of natural gas to be pumped to the surface and processed.

San Bruno Natural Gas Explosion (Aerial View, No Audio)

SAN BRUNO, CA (KGO) -- Four people have been declared dead; at least 52 others have been injured, including four who are in the hospital with critical burns following a massive natural gas explosion in San Bruno. Late Friday night, the San Mateo County Coroner's Office released the names of three of the at least four people who were killed. Two of the victims are mother and daughter -- 44-year-old Jacqueline Greig and 13-year-old Janessa Grieg. Greig worked with the California Public Utilities Commission. The other victim has been identified as 20-year-old Jessica Morales. The name of the fourth victim has not yet been released, however Faye Wharton told ABC7 the body of her 80-year-old grandmother was found in the ruins of her home, which is right next to the explosion. She received word from authorities late Friday night. Her two aunts and uncle were also in the house. They made it out alive, but were severely burned. At 6:24 pm Thursday, an explosion and fireball erupted from near the intersection near Glenview Drive and Earl Avenue. People as far as one-half mile away say they felt the boom and heat of the explosion. PG&E confirms a 30-inch natural gas line was the source of the explosion and fire. There has been no word on what caused the pipe to rupture, although PG&E President Chris Johns said the pipe was 40-50 years old. After burning out of control for hours, the blaze was finally contained Friday afternoon. Fifty-two people were transported to area hospitals ...

Fracking and the Environment: Natural Gas Drilling, Hydraulic Fracturing and Water Contamination

Gas drilling companies such as Halliburton say the gas drilling technique known as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is safe, but opponents contend it pollutes groundwater with dangerous substances. Now, new evidence has emerged possibly linking natural gas drilling to groundwater contamination. ProPublica journalist Abrahm Lustgarten reports federal officials in Wyoming have found that at least three water wells contain chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing.

Natural Gas Car Conversion

here's an IMPCO Natural Gas Conversion system on a Chevy Impala. IMPCO converts cars to run on propane and natural gas. These converted cars can also run on gasoline, making them a bi-fuel vehicle. Since the alternative fuel infrastructure is not fully developed, idea is that the driver can use gasoline as a backup between NG/Propane fillups.

A little natural gas humor

If ya'll didnt know 'fracing' is a term used for hydraulic fracturing of gas wells. The process is needed to break the rocks in order to create paths through which the natural gas can flow towards the well. The process involves around 5-6 million gallons of fresh water pumped into the well bore under high pressures. Because the water dissolves some of the salts in the rocks it is extremely salinated, sometimes up to 20x as salty as the ocean waters. Residents in the gas regions of PA, NY, Ohio and WV often complain about their residential drinking waters being poluted by the salinated fracture water or sometimes even methane gas from the formation being drilled. This is usually the result of gas companies drilling and fracturing wells in rocks that are not strong enough and eventually the frac water will seep upwards into the water table. For more information about fracturing and gas drilling Google it. The clip is from a CBC show "22 Minutes" and was given to me via an email through the office.

Fracking Hell: The Untold Story

Watch more Earth Focus at www.linktv.org An original investigative report by Earth Focus and UK's Ecologist Film Unit looks at the risks of natural gas development in the Marcellus Shale. From toxic chemicals in drinking water to unregulated interstate dumping of potentially radioactive waste that experts fear can contaminate water supplies in major population centers including New York City, are the health consequences worth the economic gains? Marcellus Shale contains enough natural gas to supply all US gas needs for 14 years. But as gas drilling takes place, using a process called hydraulic fracturing or "fracking," toxic chemicals and methane gas seep into drinking water. Now experts fear that unacceptable levels of radioactive Radium 226 in gas development waste. Fracking chemicals are linked to bone, liver and breast cancers, gastrointestinal, circulatory, respiratory, developmental as well as brain and nervous system disorders. Such chemicals are present in frack waste and may find their way into drinking water and air. Waste from Pennsylvania gas wells -- waste that may also contain unacceptable levels of radium -- is routinely dumped across state lines into landfills in New York, Ohio and West Virginia. New York does not require testing waste for radioactivity prior to dumping or treatment. So drill cuttings from Pennsylvania have been dumped in New York's Chemung and other counties and liquid waste is shipped to treatment plants in Auburn and Watertown New York ...

GASLAND Trailer 2010

GASLAND - (2010) Directed by Josh Fox. Winner of Special Jury Prize - Best US Documentary Feature - Sundance 2010. Screening at Cannes 2010. It is happening all across America and now in Europe and Africa as well - rural landowners wake up one day to find a lucrative offer from a multinational energy conglomerate wanting to lease their property. The Reason? In America, the company hopes to tap into a huge natural gas reservoir dubbed the Saudi Arabia of natural gas. Halliburton developed a way to get the gas out of the ground—a hydraulic drilling process called fracking—and suddenly America finds itself on the precipice of becoming an energy superpower. But what comes out of the ground with that natural gas? How does it affect our air and drinking water? GASLAND is a powerful personal documentary that confronts these questions with spirit, strength, and a sense of humor. When filmmaker Josh Fox receives his cash offer in the mail, he travels across 32 states to meet other rural residents on the front lines of fracking. He discovers toxic streams, ruined aquifers, dying livestock, brutal illnesses, and kitchen sinks that burst into flame. He learns that all water is connected and perhaps some things are more valuable than money.

Natural gas is a fossil fuel, like oil, trapped in rock deep in the earth. Unlike oil, it's expensive to store and transport so has more of a regional than international market. Key characteristics include: High transportation and storage cost, Seasonal demand (peak in winter months), and regional markets.
