A six-minute explanation of what Net Neutrality is and what the debate is about. This is a hot-button topic. I did strive to give a fair overview of the positions of both those who support and those who oppose government-enforced net neutrality. Note that both sides are fighting for a free internet, they just disagree on whether corporations or governments are a bigger danger. Advocates say that "Net Neutrality" will "save the Internet." But does the Internet need saving? Net Neutrality is a proposed set of regulatory powers that would grant the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) the ability to control how Internet service providers (ISPs) package their services. Proponents argue that such rules are necessary to ensure that ISPs treat all data on the Internet equally and don't slow or even restrict access to various websites and other parts of the Internet. However well-intentioned, the practical effect will be to limit consumer choice and grant the federal government unprecedented power over the Internet, all in the name of fixing a problem that doesn't exist in any meaningful way (reason.com Indeed, examples of the behavior that Net Neutrality will combat are few and far between. March 4, 2011 - Adam Beberg presents several topics related to daily life on the Internet, suitable for a wide and non-technical audience. His work over the last two decades has centered around Distributed Computing, Security, and Education. Censorship limits what can be found when looking for news and information. Privacy is far more important than in the past since everything one does on the Internet can come back to do damage years later. Anonymity has turned the world into a happy but deceptive place, safer for both whistle-blowers and criminals. US Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) is urging the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to make significant changes to its proposal on net neutrality before it takes its vote on Tuesday. Friday on the Senate floor he spoke to that issue and also asked the FCC to ensure that its vote on allowing the NBC-Comcast merger to move forward does not take place the week between Christmas and New Year's but instead during a time when Americans will have time to focus on the merger and its potential implications. "The FCC has made public its plans to act on its flawed net neutrality proposal this coming Tuesday," said Sen. Franken. "I sincerely hope that the FCC will make significant improvements before then, and that each of the Commissioners will think long and hard before they vote to approve a proposal that could actually make things worse for all Americans."

Franken vowed to fight the resolution (HJ Res. 37) when it's taken up by fellow senators. Al Gore says that legislation ensuring "net neutrality" is "needed for the revitalization of American democracy." Techno-vegan Moby says without it, the "egalitarian" Internet would disappear. Even Mallory from Family Ties, Justine Bateman, thinks "the freedom to access the site of any organization from Planned Parenthood to the Christian Coalition is going to end." But just what the hell is net neutrality—and is all that is good and holy about the Internet really imperiled if legislation guaranteeing it isn't passed? Network neutrality is necessary, say its supporters, to make certain that all data on the Internet is treated equally and to protect users from information discrimination on the part of Internet service providers who will slow down or even block access to certain sites. Reason.tv's Michael C. Moynihan takes a skeptical look at the growing push for net neutrality legislation and asks Peter Suderman, a Reason associate editor who is closely following proposals on the topic, why Moby and Mallory want the Federal Communication Commission, of all agencies, to regulate the Internet. Approximately 4 minutes. Written by Moynihan. Shot and edited by Dan Hayes and Meredith Bragg.

Senator Al Franken (D-Min) didn't disappoint as he wrapped up the 2010 Netroots conference. While he thanked supporters and activists, specifically mentioning The UpTake for chronicling the eight-month recount, he cautioned everyone against giving up the fight. Among his comments:"Corporations aren't inherently evil but they are inherently powerful. They know more about you than you know about them." We didn't get everything we wanted but if we give up now, the Republicans will take away everything that we did get.Once, only the government could threaten your First Amendment rights. Today, corporations can. Net neutrality is the First Amendment issue of our time.If we don't stop them, megacorporations will control all content. How long will it take before Fox News uploads 5 times faster than DailyKos?Franken concluded by announcing the location of next year's Netroots, Minneapolis. "There's great fishing," he said.
