Net Neutrality

A six-minute explanation of what Net Neutrality is and what the debate is about. This is a hot-button topic. I did strive to give a fair overview of the positions of both those who support and those who oppose government-enforced net neutrality. Note that both sides are fighting for a free internet, they just disagree on whether corporations or governments are a bigger danger. Franken: FCC Net Neutrality Plan "Flawed"

US Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) is urging the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to make significant changes to its proposal on net neutrality before it takes its vote on Tuesday. Friday on the Senate floor he spoke to that issue and also asked the FCC to ensure that its vote on allowing the NBC-Comcast merger to move forward does not take place the week between Christmas and New Year's but instead during a time when Americans will have time to focus on the merger and its potential implications. "The FCC has made public its plans to act on its flawed net neutrality proposal this coming Tuesday," said Sen. Franken. "I sincerely hope that the FCC will make significant improvements before then, and that each of the Commissioners will think long and hard before they vote to approve a proposal that could actually make things worse for all Americans."

Censorship, Privacy, Anonymity, and Net Neutrality

March 4, 2011 - Adam Beberg presents several topics related to daily life on the Internet, suitable for a wide and non-technical audience. His work over the last two decades has centered around Distributed Computing, Security, and Education. Censorship limits what can be found when looking for news and information. Privacy is far more important than in the past since everything one does on the Internet can come back to do damage years later. Anonymity has turned the world into a happy but deceptive place, safer for both whistle-blowers and criminals. Net Neutrality is a three-way crash between technology, business, and political realities, that may have serious consequences for future freedoms and business opportunities. Will Net Neutrality Save the Internet?

Advocates say that "Net Neutrality" will "save the Internet." But does the Internet need saving? Net Neutrality is a proposed set of regulatory powers that would grant the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) the ability to control how Internet service providers (ISPs) package their services. Proponents argue that such rules are necessary to ensure that ISPs treat all data on the Internet equally and don't slow or even restrict access to various websites and other parts of the Internet. However well-intentioned, the practical effect will be to limit consumer choice and grant the federal government unprecedented power over the Internet, all in the name of fixing a problem that doesn't exist in any meaningful way (reason.com Indeed, examples of the behavior that Net Neutrality will combat are few and far between. Net Neutrality - PBS NOW Part 1/2

Is the wild west culture of the Internet about to become a thing of the past? Big business is staking its claim on the information superhighway, lobbying Congress for an exclusive faster lane, which consumers could end up paying for. This week on NOW we look at a major battle brewing in Washington DC over the future of the Internet. We follow the story of Blip.tv, an ambitious video-streaming startup. They're fighting for a corner of the Internet marketplace in the midst of a battle over so-called 'net neutrality' -- the idea that all Internet content and websites are given the same access to audiences and customers. If telecommunication giants have their way, companies like Blip.tv might be forced to compete in a marketplace wherein firms with large coffers can buy access to greater bandwidth and faster Internet speeds, leaving sites who can't afford to pay in the slow lane. Craig Aaron of Free Press, a media watchdog group, says big telecom companies have declared open season on 'Net neutrality.' He's afraid these companies will dictate how we use the Internet. "I think one of the beauties of the Internet is that it's been open to views across the political spectrum. And if you hand the control of the information so that some can be preferred over others, you're going to be handing that control to the big media companies that already control our television, airwaves, radio, you name it," Aaron says. For their part, telecom companies argue that a fast lane on the ...

Net Neutrality for Dummies: Will the FCC control the Internet?

Al Gore says that legislation ensuring "net neutrality" is "needed for the revitalization of American democracy." Techno-vegan Moby says without it, the "egalitarian" Internet would disappear. Even Mallory from Family Ties, Justine Bateman, thinks "the freedom to access the site of any organization from Planned Parenthood to the Christian Coalition is going to end." But just what the hell is net neutrality—and is all that is good and holy about the Internet really imperiled if legislation guaranteeing it isn't passed? Network neutrality is necessary, say its supporters, to make certain that all data on the Internet is treated equally and to protect users from information discrimination on the part of Internet service providers who will slow down or even block access to certain sites. Reason.tv's Michael C. Moynihan takes a skeptical look at the growing push for net neutrality legislation and asks Peter Suderman, a Reason associate editor who is closely following proposals on the topic, why Moby and Mallory want the Federal Communication Commission, of all agencies, to regulate the Internet. Approximately 4 minutes. Written by Moynihan. Shot and edited by Dan Hayes and Meredith Bragg.

Get more great videos coanews.org Major telecommunications companies are spending millions lobbying the US congress to make the Internet into a private network. In political lingo this mean abandoning what is called "Net Neutrality". In common sense terms it's about the government withdrawing our right to Internet Freedom. This V-Doc. (viral documentary) is about the current threat to Internet Freedom and how we can hold on to the open Internet and our right to communicate. The only way the telecommunications companies will be successful is if we fail to raise awareness about this situation. If people find out about the fact that we are about to lose our Internet freedom there is no way they will allow congress to do this. This congressional decision will set a monumental precedent, and thus, impact not just US citizens, but citizens all over world.

The Principle of Medical Neutrality

War and civil unrest turn soldiers—and, often, civilians—into deliberate targets. Medical professionals have an ethical duty to provide care and treatment to those in need, without discrimination, even in times of conflict. But during conflict and civil unrest, health care professionals, facilities, and patients too often come under attack. These attacks are not a natural part of conflict, but are deliberate violations of the principle of Medical Neutrality. This video from Physicians for Human Rights provides a brief introduction to the principle of Medical Neutrality, its foundation in medical ethics and international law, violations of Medical Neutrality, and steps that can be taken to protect and promote the principle. Written by: Andrea Gittleman Produced and Narrated by: Jared Voss Featuring: Parveen Parmar, MD, MPH, Susannah Sirkin, Richard Sollom, and Hans Hogrefe

Tim Wu on Network Neutrality

For our 200th episode, we get sorta serious with the subject matter, but dont worry, theres still LOLcats involved. We talk to a very esoteric and smarty-pants guy, Columbia University law school professor Tim Wu (hes hot too! but married) — hes the guy who even the FCC trusts to help them make fair laws about such things as the AT&T and BellSouth merger. Professor Wu is credited with popularizing the concept of network neutrality in his 2003 paper Network Neutrality, Broadband Discrimination. In 2006, he co-authored the book, Who Controls the Internet? Network neutrality is essential to free speech, equal opportunity and economic innovation in America, so if you use the internet — or at least, if you watch porn on the internet — heres your chance to learn exactly why you should care. Also, after you watch this episode, you can sound super smart at all those parties you go to with your social networking friends. During 2008, Wu served as an adviser to the Barack Obama presidential campaign.

Senator Al Franken (D-Min) didn't disappoint as he wrapped up the 2010 Netroots conference. While he thanked supporters and activists, specifically mentioning The UpTake for chronicling the eight-month recount, he cautioned everyone against giving up the fight. Among his comments:"Corporations aren't inherently evil but they are inherently powerful. They know more about you than you know about them." We didn't get everything we wanted but if we give up now, the Republicans will take away everything that we did get.Once, only the government could threaten your First Amendment rights. Today, corporations can. Net neutrality is the First Amendment issue of our time.If we don't stop them, megacorporations will control all content. The idea is to shine a light into the dark corners of the ever shapeshifting world of track trace and data basing carried out every waking moment by the people you elected to protect those rights , the same kind of people who on the first day of 2012 created 40000 new laws to take away the freedoms and liberties you elected them to protect , sound familiar yet ? well guess what it gets much worst . Reposting this video is appreciated and encouraged , thats is what they don,t want you to ever do that is why this video exist ,after watching this video it will be easy to say in a few years this will not be possible . The info in this video took around 2 years to compile , a time capsule of the most important point in the history of the world . This will always be remembered as the only time in history we were free and we abrogated out responsibilities to the future generations, or we were the stewards of earths freedom from repression . Only a informed society can chose the right path , so that means its up to us to see this through . Net Neutrality, Corporatism, Big Brother and You

Back in the mid 2000s, the corporations were lobbying the US government to allow them to privatize the Internet. The argument for this was that not privatizing it was a waste of potential revenue. However, there was the issue of the telecommunications companies not actually having any right to do this. The issue of Net neutrality vs. privatization has far from gone away and the pursuit to rein in the Internet has just shifted its tactics from privatizing for profit to doing so for 'security', but it's really the same old issue with a new face. One way or another, they want to disable the free flow of information. I see all this tying in to the concerns we all have about a possible false flag in the next weeks or months. A lot of attention has been given in the media to issues surrounding this, but normally the public is not given such an elaborate heads-up before anything goes down, so I find it strange. On the other hand, the issue of Internet security is a hot one these days, and I wouldn't put it the Itanimulli to make their next false flag a cyber attack. Because something just doesn't make sense. Why is the terror alert raisedto severe in Britain? They are not havinng Olympics. Why are there 4500 Canadian Forces troops being used for Olympic security? Is it really about the Olympics? Doesn't that seem a bit excessive, even by NWO standards? Or could it be that they have so many troops ready because what will take place will involve much more than an attack on the ...
