Physicist: Neutrino Faster Than Speed of Light

On Thursday, the world's biggest physics lab unveiled a shocking finding: that one type of subatomic particle was clocked going faster than the speed of light. If true, it could undercut Einstein's theories. (Sept. 23)

Faster-Than-Light Neutrino Result Caused by Loose Wire

BY STEVEN SPARKMAN ANCHOR MEGAN MURPHY It looks like the experiment that rocked the physics community was just a case of bad wiring. Last fall, scientists at CERN announced they had detected neutrinos moving faster than light — which is against the laws of physics. But KTRK reports scientists are saying — oops. "An earth-shattering discovery was actually a mistake according to scientists in Geneva. ... A faulty connection between a GPS receiver and a computer created the false reading." The original experiment fired neutrinos from Switzerland to Italy, and found they arrived 60 nanoseconds faster than light would have. ZDNet explains, the scientists knew it was more likely they'd screwed up than that Einstein was wrong. "When they first reported their surprising findings, the OPERA team were clear that they were not definitely saying neutrinos could travel faster than light, but were simply revealing what they had observed." Still, the physics world had a fun few months picking apart the data. They suggested everything from relativity itself throwing off the measurements to simple math errors. But ScienceInsider spoke to a source saying the loose wire seems to account for the finding. "After tightening the connection and then measuring the time it takes data to travel the length of the fiber, researchers found that the data arrive 60 nanoseconds earlier than assumed." A writer for Popular Science says, after the prospect of physics being wrong, relativity overturned <b>...</b>

Leaders of 'Faster Than Light' Neutrino Experiment Resign

Transcript by www.newsy.com BY STEVEN SPARKMAN ANCHOR CHRISTIAN BRYANT The two public faces of the OPERA collaboration, the experiment that seemed to show neutrinos moving faster than the speed of light last Fall, have stepped down, reportedly over disagreements from the team on how they handled the media. Here's euronews. "An Italian professor who thought he'd disproved Einstein's theory of relativity has resigned after it turned out he hadn't. Antonio Ereditato appeared to challenge one of the fundamentals of modern physics..." But wait, is that really how it played out? Ereditato's colleague Dario Autiero, who presented the neutrino results at CERN, also stepped down on Friday, telling Nature the researchers never said they'd disproved Einstein. "Despite the fact that OPERA itself never claimed to overturn Einstein's theory, keeping its claims narrowly to the report of an anomalous measurement, many newspapers depicted it that way. 'They played with the sensationalism of the story...'" Although technical issues now seem to have been the cause of the speedy neutrino results, last Fall, the physics world exploded, trying to make sense of their results. Ereditato and Autiero say physicists' excitement was unfairly translated into "Einstein was wrong" headlines. Video from CERN at the time shows they were more cautious than reported. Autiero "We are just presenting today our result as experimentalists." Ereditato: "We would like just to say that we made a measurement, this <b>...</b>

TEDxSalford - Dario Autiero - The Neutrino Anomaly

Dario Autiero, of the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Lyons, France is the Head of the OPERA Collaboration at CERN which conducted the faster than light neutrino speed tests in 2011. The Oscillation Project with Emulsion-tRacking Apparatus (OPERA) is a scientific experiment for detecting tau neutrinos from muon neutrino oscillations. It is a collaboration between CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, and the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Gran Sasso, Italy. In September 2011, Dario Autiero presented findings that indicated neutrinos were arriving at OPERA about 60 nanoseconds earlier than they would if they were travelling at the speed of light. The experiment was recently repeated with a different technique but yielded similar results. In this exclusive talk, Dario focuses on the neutrino velocity results arising from the neutrino experiment and possible explanations for this anomalistic behaviour. A Text Message Using Neutrinos?

BY GINA COOK ANCHOR EMILY SPAIN Text messaging with neutrinos? That's what scientists are saying could be in our future now that they've sent a message through 780 feet of stone using the subatomic particles. Live Science explains the process of sending the message. "...researchers turned their neutrino beam on and off in the fashion of a binary system of 1's and 0's used by computers to encapsulate information... To make a 1, the scientists turned the neutrino beam on and let it send its signal to the detector. To make a zero, they stopped the beam, losing a pulse. Thus they were able to spell out 'neutrino' in a way that could be read by scientists at the detector." Why do you care? Because neutrinos can travel through pretty much anything — and that could mean better, faster communication--without the use of satellites and wires. In The University of Rochester's press release, a scientist says, "Using neutrinos, it would be possible to communicate between any two points on Earth without using satellites or cables. Neutrino communication systems would be much more complicated than today's systems, but may have important strategic uses." And ZDNet says, "With their neutral electric charge and almost non-existent mass, neutrinos are not subject to magnetic attractions and are not significantly altered by gravity, so they are virtually free of any possible interference..." But Geekosystem says the capability of neutrinos to travel through anything might be a downfall. 'Now <b>...</b>

BBC Horizon Project Poltergeist (Missing Neutrinos) - Full Documentary

This is the story of two genuine scientific heroes. For forty years, John Bahcall and Ray Davis were engaged in a single extraordinary experiment - to find out why the Sun shines. In the end they would triumph. Davis would win the Nobel Prize and, thanks to their work, a whole new theory about how the universe is put together may have to be created. At the heart of this story is a tiny, utterly mysterious thing called a neutrino. Trillions of them pass through your body every second, touching nothing, leaving no trace. Yet neutrinos are one of a handful of fundamental particles in the universe, essential to every atom in existence and clues to what makes the Sun work. But their ghost-like quality made trapping and understanding them immensely difficult. What then followed was a bizarre series of experiments. They led from a vat containing 600 tons of cleaning fluid, to a vast cavern in a Japanese mountain, to a hole in the ground in Canada two kilometres deep. What they would reveal would stun the world of science. It seems that neutrinos may be our parents. They may be the reason why everything, including us, exists.

CERN: Neutrino particles travel faster than light speed

23 September 2011 Last updated at 10:55 Puzzling results from Cern, home of the Large Hadron Collider, have confounded physicists - because it seems subatomic particles have beaten the speed of light. Neutrinos sent through the ground from Cern toward the Gran Sasso laboratory 732km (454 miles) away in Italy seemed to show up a tiny fraction of a second early. Physicist Brian Cox talks to Shaun Keaveny on BBC 6 Music about this baffling find - he says that if it is right, it could require a complete rewriting of our understanding of the laws of the Universe.

OPERA neutrino experiment on breaking speed of light --- webcast

This is the live Webcast from CERN on Friday September 23, 2011. Given the potential far-reaching consequences of the OPERA experiment --- which observes a neutrino beam from CERN 730 km away at Italy's INFN Gran Sasso Laboratory, indicating that the neutrinos travel at a velocity 20 parts per million above the speed of light --- independent measurements are needed before the effect can either be refuted or firmly established, according to a CERN statement just issued. The OPERA collaboration has therefore decided to open the result to broader scrutiny.

Prof. Carlo Rubbia: „The Marvellous Neutrino"

The properties of neutrinos, the most abundant particles in the Universe, were discussed. As an example of the detection technique used for neutrino detection, the ICARUS T600 detector - which operates at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory - was presented. It is the first large mass, liquid argon Time Projection Chamber which combines the imaging capabilities with the energy measurement. Examples of reconstructed neutrino interactions was given. After Professor Carlo Rubbia's lecture a discussion - not only on the marvellous neutrino - took place.

RAB Neutrino Endurance Down Jacket Review

1st USA review for the 2011 to 2012 Winter Season. 1/22/2012 UPDATE: The temperatures have finally been in the single digits in the North East and I'm finding this to be a very warm and easy to wear jacket. I was worrried that the light weight of the jacket would prove to be a downside when the temperature dipped way below freezing but it has kept me very warm. I had two layers (a cotton Tshirt and a polypro Mammut Underwear mid layer) underneath this Jacket on a windy 5 degree afternoon and was warm. One thing I did note is that the waterproofed zipper tracks get stiff when in freezing conditions. Another thing is because I have narrow 30 inch hips for my height 5'8" and 39"chest/?"shoulder width , I found the jacket did not cinch as tightly on me at the hemline and some wind managed to get in around my mid section. This only happened on very windy days. If you have this issue then this is easily remedied by just tucking in one of your baselayers inside your pants and wearing long johns. All in all this jacket has proved to be a great buy!

The Neutrino Time Traveller

Neutrinos can travel faster than light, so the grand experiment has proven, 15.000 times! After a mundane intro of peculiarities I am busy with, this is all I address, warp speed nine ahead. I explore the implications what this spectacular CERN large hadron collider experiment could have on time travel, and possible messages from the future. Yet could we simply first charge these neutrinos with messages for the past, before we even think of travelling ourselves somehow? Or can we only launch them in a certain geographical direction, and that was it? Anyway, it's the most thrilling discovery of the past century (and the best one since tortilla & Blake Lively)! Are Neutrinos Faster Than the Speed of Light? A Challenge to Einstein's Theory of Relativity

Neutrinos are trending after the subatomic particles were clocked traveling faster than the speed of light. Neutrinos are almost massless and capable of traveling through ordinary matter basically unaffected. Researchers fired an underground beam of them from CERNapos;s Geneva base to a lab 454 miles away in Gran Sasso, Italy. They found that the neutrinos beat particles of light to Italy by 60 nanoseconds, or sixty billionths of a second. The result, if it holds up, would challenge one of the pillars of Einsteinapos;s theory of special relativity, proposed in 1905. Many scientists remain skeptical, believing that something is amiss with the experiment and that 186282 miles per second remains the cosmic speed limit.

Was Einstein Wrong? Faster Than Light Neutrinos

The first result relied on matching the time profile of fairly long proton bunches at CERN to the arrival times of neutrinos in the Gran Sasso lab, hundreds of kilometres away. One of my main worries about the original result was that if the shape of this profile varied by a small amount between CERN and Gran Sasso, the result might change a lot, and they had not considered this systematic uncertainty. Now, instead of firing long blobs of neutrinos, CERN have been firing short pulses, just three billionths of second long. So now to measure the time, the OPERA physicists do not need to know the shape of the pulse, they just need to know which pulse the neutrino came from. They have done the study, and with just twenty neutrinos seen, they come up with the same answer - the neutrinos appear to be travelling a bit faster than the speed of light. This means the result has survived a first test. There are other tests which need doing, and to be honest this is such a remarkable result, with such profound implications if it is correct, that we need at least one completely independent experiment to check it. There are experiments - MINOS in the USA and T2K in Japan - which could do this. It is more likely now that they will really make the effort to do so. The intriguing story continues...

CERN Faster Than Light - Is Time Travel Possible?

CERN Faster Than Light - ls Time Possible? According to the European Organization for Nuclear Research located in Geneva on the Swiss-France border, they have measured a neutrino particle going 50-70 nanoseconds faster than the speed of light. According to Einstein's Theory of relativity, this is not possible. According to Einstein's E=MC2 theory, the faster something moves through space, the more time slows down. So, at one point, when you travel faster than light speed, you will actually be going backward in time. Cern has asked Japan and US experts to corroborate their findings. Cern is also home to the particle accelerator or "collider", which enables them to test the speed at which these neutrinos travel.

CERN OPERA neutrinos travel faster than light, Sep 22, 2011

One of the very pillars of physics and Einstein's theory of relativity - that nothing can go faster than the speed of light - was rocked Thursday, Sep 22, 2011 by new findings from one of the world's foremost laboratories [CNRS]. European researchers said they clocked an oddball type of subatomic particle called a neutrino going faster than the 186282 miles per second that has long been considered the cosmic speed limit. www.physorg.com Einstein never has proven, but only made the assumption, that the speed of light is the maximum obtainable speed of all items in our universe. The CERN OPERA experiment, demonstrating that muon neutrinos do travel faster than light has unbelievable profound consequences. All the works of physics, books articles etc. which rely on Einsteins assumption can be safely tossed into the dumpster ... Thats quite a few. Also theoretical departments are forced into a renewed kick-start and move back to the drawing boards, which include string theory, black holes, dark matter and renewed interpretations of astronomical measurements data. That something was seriously wrong in the field of Physics had become clear after highly critical books on string theory had been published in 2006/2007 : The Trouble With Physics: The Rise of String Theory, The Fall of a Science, and What Comes Next by Lee Smolin Paperback: 416 pages Publisher: Mariner Books; Reprint edition (September 4, 2007) Language: English ISBN-10: 061891868X ISBN-13: 978-0618918683 www.amazon <b>...</b>

One-Minute Physics: How to measure superfast neutrinos

Can neutrinos travel faster than light? Last September, a CERN experiment claimed to have caught neutrinos breaking the fundamental speed limit of the universe. However, most physicists are sceptical about the result since it flies in the face of the well-tested theories of general and special relativity. In this One-Minute physics episode, animator Henry Reich takes us on a field trip to show how the Italian researchers measured the groundbreaking neutrino speed. New Scientist TV (c)
