At the Vermeer Corporation headquarters in Pella, Iowa, Newt answers questions about education, jobs, taxes, regulation, trade agreements, energy policy and other issues facing the business and manufacturing industry. According to the Des Moines Register, Newt received the most applause of any of the presidential candidates. Newt Gingrich got the most applause from the audience full of business leaders at this morning's presidential candidates' forum sponsored by the National Association of Manufacturers. There was enthusiastic clapping when Gingrich said he would educate Congress on how legislation needs to be longer term rather than lasting just a year. Several business executives said later they appreciated Gingrich's thoughts on how to improve worker training for the jobless. He said the 99 weeks a worker collects unemployment is equal to the time it takes to earn an associate's degree. "Of this group, I think Newt Gingrich is the most qualified intellectually to take this country the furthest," said Al Jennings, chairman and CEO of EFCO Corp. in Des Moines. Feel the rainbow! Man dumps glitter on Newt Gingrich in 'gay prank'
The US Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich and his wife Callista were hit with glittery confetti by a protester during the couple's appearance at a book-signing in Minneapolis on Tuesday. The man approached the Gingriches during the signing at a downtown hotel. As Gingrich handed him a signed copy of the book, the protester dumped a cracker box full of confetti on the pair, shouting: "Feel the rainbow, Newt! Stop the hate! Stop anti-gay politics! It's dividing our country and it's not fixing our economy!" The man was quickly pushed out of the room by an event organiser. Although authorities couldn't immediately confirm the man's identity, he appeared to be Nick Espinosa, an event crasher who disrupted at least two other political events in Minnesota, including one in which he dumped a bagful of pennies in the lap of a Republican candidate for governor last year. In that prank, Espinosa - who has also used the name Robert Erickson - told reporters he was trying to highlight immigration issues. Espinosa emailed reporters later on Tuesday and attached pictures of the confetti attack.

All of the candidates raised their hands. When asked why he was shaking his head, Newt Gingrich said, "I think this "super committee" is about as dumb an idea as Washington has come up with in my lifetime." He went onto say the idea that 523 congressman and senators are going to sit around for four months, while 12 people are going to sit in a room and brilliantly come up with a trillion dollars is irrational. He said, "They're going to walk in just before Thanksgiving and say 'Ok, we can shoot you in the head or cut off your right leg, which do you prefer.'"
