Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni Ba in Timbuktu

Bassekou Kouyate and his band Ngoni Ba made one of the best received African albums of 2009. "I Speak Fula", released in September followed the hugely successful 2007 Segu Blue album. Through his music, Bassekou and his band have breathed new life into Ngoni playing. The traditional string instrument made of wood or calabash with animal skin stretched across it was always played sitting down on stage. Bassekou and his band changed that, strapping the Ngonis over their shoulders like guitars and bringing the instruments to the front of the stage. Bassekou and Ngoni Ba headlined on Friday night at the Festival of the Desert. We made contact with him on Saturday and he invited us to come to where he and his band were staying in Timbuktu to film an unplugged performance in the more traditional style. Again, we found ourselves racing the setting sun, trying to get the performance recorded before the light failed us. We borrowed his neighbour's rooftop and Bassekou Kouyate, his wife Amy Sacko, Calabash player Alou Coulibaly and Ngoni bassplayer Moussa Bah performed this beautiful version of "Jonkoloni" from the album Segu Blue.

Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni Ba

Bassekou Kouyate annd Ngoni Ba live at the Rio Theatre Santa Cruz CA 03-19-2010 - A small video collage of short clips from throughout the show. Bassekou Kouyate is like the Jimi Hendrix of Ngoni; he is incredibly amazing! From the roots of his African Culture to the Blues of Europe and America this man plays his three stringed hand made acoustic Ngoni with the skill and energy rival to all of Rock music's greatist guitar hero's! The following text is copied from: www.outhere.de (where you can purchase his new CD "I Speak Fula") "From his early days in Bamako when he was playing in a trio together with Toumani Diabate and Keletigui Diabate till today where he is pursuing his own career, Bassekou has transformed the traditional music of the ngoni into the modern world of today. With his band ngoni ba he has created a new lineup as a quartet with a bands style of playing. The ngonis they play are still acoustic as in the old days, but Bassekou invented a bass ngoni even lower in pitch than the ngoni ba (low ngoni), and added extra strings to make their instruments harmonically more flexible. In the process Bassekou opened up the magic of an age-old music that he and his band have been playing for their entire lives, to people all over the world. Bassekou Kouyate has now become the ambassador of the ngoni. He has brought this ancient instrument back to where it used to be: to the center of Malian music." If you enjoy this video and this music then I strongly urge you to buy ...

Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni ba

Saturday, November 12, 2011, 8 PM Meany Hall on the UW Campus Seattle, WA 2011 Grammy-nominated Bassekou Kouyate is a virtuoso picker and musical visionary whose work blurs the lines between West African and American roots music. Bassekou has jammed with Bonnie Raitt and Bono, and won praise from Eric Clapton. He's also dug into blues and country music with Taj Mahal and created freewheeling improvisations with banjo maverick Bela Fleck. Bassekou's instrument, the ngoni, is a "spike lute" and an ancestor of the banjo, sharing its taut-skinned drum body, percussive attack, and varied picking techniques. Since 2005, Bassekou has led Ngoni Ba, the first-ever group built around not one but four ngonis—all played by members of his family. The group's second CD I Speak Fula was the first recording to be released (February 2010) on Sub Pop Records new world music imprint Next Ambiance.
