Nicaragua

Nicaragua is a representative democratic republic. It is the largest country in Central America with an area of 130373 km2. The country is bordered by Honduras to the north and Costa Rica to the south. The Pacific Ocean lies to the west of the country, the Caribbean Sea to the east. Falling within the tropics, Nicaragua sits between 11 degrees and 14 degrees north of the Equator in the Northern Hemisphere. Nicaragua's abundance of biologically significant and unique ecosystems contribute to Mesoamerica's designation as a biodiversity hotspot. The capital city of Nicaragua is Managua. Roughly one quarter of the nation's population lives in the Nicaraguan capital, making it the second largest city and metropolitan area in Central America. The Spanish Empire conquered the region in the 16th century and the territory became associated with the Viceroyalty of New Spain and later the Captaincy General of Guatemala. Alongside the Spanish, the British established a protectorate on the eastern seaboard beginning in the middle of the 17th century, and ending roughly two centuries later. The eastern seaboard retains its colonial heritage; English is commonly spoken and the culture in Atlantic regions identify themselves as being more caribbean. In 1821, Nicaragua achieved its independence from Spain and joined the Federal Republic of Central America in 1823, later leaving the Federal Republic in 1838. Hard Labour - Nicaragua

Third world economies struggling to end child labour To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com Nearly half of Nicaragua's population live below the poverty line. It means that working has become part of everyday life for hundreds of thousands of children, as their families struggle to make ends meet. A group of children smash stones into small pieces, risking blindness as chips of rock fly into the air. Officially, child labour is illegal in Nicaragua and the cooperative leader in one quarry is quick to deny that any children are working there. "It is prohibited for children to work as stone cutters. It's much too risky. Children should go to school, not work." But Anibal, a ten-year-old labourer, tells a different story. He has already spent a year in hospital after he was injured working at the quarry. "A pile of dirt fell from up high. It fell on me and injured my leg." Despite the objections of the Sandinista government, being one of the poorest countries in Latin America leaves families with little choice. Diana Espinoza, the local representative from Save the Children admits it is a very difficult situation: "there's a whole market with child labour at several levels". Tackling Urban Risk: Nicaragua

Strengthening Seismic disaster risk preparedness and response capacities in urban Managua. Managua cathedral, partially destroyed in the 1972 earthquake, has never been restored. Between 3000 and 7000 people were killed in the 1972 earthquake in Managua; more than 20000 were injured and 250000 left homeless. Nicaragua is a country especially vulnerable to natural hazards; periodically affected by hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, floods and droughts. Rapidly increasing urban population and unplanned urban growth has increased exposure and vulnerability to adverse natural events. Elevated water levels of Lake Managua, rising nearly four meters (13 feet) during Hurricane Mitch in 1998, poses a continued risk of flash flooding. Over 79% of the house and buildings in Managua are of bad or mediocre quality, 18% are in need of complete renovation (World Disaster Report, IFRC, 2010) The Nicaraguan population's vulnerability to hazard is aggravated by a dire socio-economic situation and high levels of poverty. Nicaragua remains the second poorest country in Latin America, after Haiti. Increasing social risk include growing expressions of urban violence amongst urban youth. María Lidia Torrez and her family are beneficiaries of the EU-DIPECHO finance project on Strengthening Earthquake Preparation and Response Capacities in twelve vulnerable neighbourhoods of Managua. The project is implemented by the Nicaraguan Red Cross with support of the Spanish, Italian and Dutch ...
Nicaragua - Granada

Our last day in Nicaragua involved us leaving Ometepe and ferrying back to the mainland where we took a taxi to Granada, with a stop on the way at the Masaya Volcano. We basically spent a rushed Saturday afternoon checking out the central park and a few of the churches and the cemetery. Protecting the Lake Managua in Nicaragua | Global Ideas

For decades, the household sewage and industrial effluents generated by residents and farmers in Nicaragua ended up unfiltered in the Managua lake, one of the country's largest fresh water reservoirs. The result was an epidemic of water-transmitted infections and toxins in the lake's fish. Now, a water treatment plant supplies fresh water and much more. Experts are working on using dried sewage sludge as an alternative to synthetic fertilizers, saving both money and damaging carbon emissions. A film by Marion Hütter.

Nicaragua relatively unscathed by drug menace

Central America is the poorest region of the Western Hemisphere, and it is also the most violent, largely as a result of the influence of drug gangs. But Nicaragua, which shares many characteristics of its more violent neighbours, has not suffered the scars of drug trafficking, and locals say that strong community relations keep violence off their streets. Leon, Nicaragua: An unvarnished look at downtown

Get your free report on Nicaragua here: www1.internationalliving.com International Living editor Lee Harrison tours downtown León—Nicaragua's intellectual capital, and also a university town. León, the capital of the country for 200 years before Managua was so designated, once served as the country's political, military, cultural, and religious center. It is said that the only reason that Managua was made the capital was because of its location: between the very liberal León and the very conservative Granada. León is still the intellectual capital of the country today, and its Municipal Library has good collections. The Metropolitan Cathedral here is considered the most significant colonial structure in all of Central America; many prominent Nicaraguans, including Ruben Dario, are buried inside its walls. In this video, you'll see: --A well maintained city with a recent rise in tourism --A good example of colonial architecture --More foreign influence -- like an Italian bakery and a new casino --A lot of wall art and photos as tributes to Nicaraguan freedom --Book sales at the side of the street and sidewalk vendors selling food and antiques --A bustling main square Learn more about Nicaragua and other countries in our daily postcard e-letter. Nicaragua - Ometepe

Footage we shot during our recent trip to Nicaragua in February 2012. We spent the first day in Moyogalpa, and then headed off to the Maderas side of the island and stayed at the Hacienda Merida. All the wildlife, sunset shots, etc are from that side of the island. The awesome bird footage Irena got was kayaking in the Rio Istián area between the islands, the swimming & tree swing shots are from the pool at Ojo de Agua, and the waterfall is in San Ramon (tough hike!). The time lapse boat shots, and people in rough water all came while we were waiting on the mainland in San Jose for the ferry to the island. The children shots were mostly walking around Merida or of the schoolkids they teach English to at the Hacienda Merida. Footage by Irena Sapilak. You can check out her video of our travels at vimeo.com Also check out her photography at irena.zenfolio.com Editing by me in iMovie '11 We carried a lot of equipment with us, including, a Nikon d7000, Panasonic GH2, Panansonic SD-600, tripod & monopod.
