During his reign the Russian Empire reached its peak size of over 7.7 million square miles. Known as the "Gendarme of Europe" he put his forces at the disposal of the Austrian Empire in putting down the Hungarian rebellion and was an enemy of revolutionary activity wherever he found it. His father was Tsar Paul I and he succeeded his elder brother Tsar Alexander I. He died during the ultimately doomed Crimean War.
