Steve Jobs, 1955-2011

nma.tv Steve Jobs -- Apple's founder and innovator who revolutionized the way the world uses technology -- has died after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 56. We at Next Media Animation mourn his passing and celebrate his life. Our thoughts are with his family and his four young children. Apple and Steve Jobs have featured prominently in our animations. This was not due to enmity or ill will. It was because we admired him. We admired the way he could capture so many of our imaginations. Steve Jobs made the world fall in love with and embrace technology. Much of what Next Media Animation does -- indeed what any media company does -- would be impossible were it not for Steve Jobs. He impacted how animation gets made. How it gets edited. How its get delivered and viewed all over the world. For that we are deeply grateful. We will miss animating you, Steve. Thanks so very much. Apple vs HTC: Apple scores minor victory in Android fight

nma.tv The US International Trade Commission has given Apple a partial victory in its patent dispute with HTC over the Android operating system. The ruling, however, was more favorable than expected as the Taiwanese company emerged victorious in three of the four patent claims. So what exactly did Apple win? Well, you know how you can tap on a phone number to auto-magically call that number when it appears in an e-mail or text? Apple says it owns that and other user interface features. As a result of the ITC ruling, HTC must discontinue offering the feature in its Android phones. HTC has some time to fix the code in its handsets that run Android, which is provided by Google. From April 19, 2012, HTC will no longer be allowed to import into the United States Android handsets containing the UI features. While it's a small victory for Apple, it's a important step toward the company's long-term goal to crush Android. The late Steve Jobs told his biographer that he wanted Google to stop stealing ideas from Apple. Jobs said: "If you offer me $5 billion, I won't want it. I've got plenty of money. I want you to stop using our ideas in Android, that's all."

Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Sperminator, and his illegitimate children

nma.tv The reason for the termination of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver's marriage has been revealed — he fathered an illegitimate child. The LA Times says the mother was a long-time member of his domestic staff. Maria thought the maid's husband was the father. There is speculation about a second love child. The Daily Mail reported in 2003 on an alleged affair with his former personal flight attendant. A contrite Arnold has reportedly been trying to get Maria back. But she's furious about getting such a raw deal. The scandal is unlikely to affect the former governor's political ambitions, but it could definitely help reignite his movie career.

NBA 2011 lockout over, season to start on Christmas

www.nma.tv NBA players and owners have reached a tentative deal to end the 2011 lockout. The owners got pretty much what they wanted while the players saw their share of revenue slashed from 57% to between 49% and 51%. The owners and NBA Commissioner David Stern say the new deal is necessary because the league was losing money — $300 million last year alone — and that small-market teams were struggling to stay afloat. Rather than address the problems that got the league into this situation — namely the absence of real revenue sharing between large- and small-market teams — the owners essentially extorted the players. They locked the players out, which led to the loss of 16 regular season games and cost both the players and owners $400 million in lost revenue. Ironically, a former player, Michael Jordan, now owner of the Charlotte Bobcats, was one of the most hardline owners. According to the New York Times, Jordan was the leader of a faction of "between 10 and 14 owners" who "wanted the players' share capped at 47 percent." The deal still needs to be ratified by a majority of teams and players. Before that happens the players need to dismiss their anti-trust lawsuit to reform their union. As of now, the 2011-2012 NBA season could start on Christmas Day. Training camp starts Dec. 9.

Steve Jobs' iBiography flies off the shelves

nma.tv Steve Jobs did not ask to read his biography by Walter Issacson before it was published. But he got the cover design he wanted. The biography, which was published just weeks after Jobs died, is now projected to be a bestseller. In it, we find out Jobs regretted not getting surgery sooner. He told Obama he was a one-term president. And he said Bill Gates "would be a broader guy" if he dropped acid. The biography also hints at a new version of Apple TV controlled by Siri. It looks like the spirit of Steve will be with Apple for some time to come. Will Apple carry out Jobs' goal of waging "thermonuclear war" on Android? Afraid that Apple will flounder like Disney after Walt passed on, Jobs told his successor Tim Cook never to ask "What would Steve do?" Instead, Cook should do what's right.

Urine-controlled video games in the UK and Japan

nma.tv The Exhibit Bar in London installed some video games in the mens' restroom, where your urine stream is your controller. A sensor in the urinal senses you approaching, then tracks the heat and movement of the stream. There are several games available and also in development. One is a skiing game where you veer left and right to steer down the slope. There is a trivia game too, called Clever Dick. And another is Artsplash, where you create splashes of color on a canvas. And then you can save your work and email it to your girlfriend!! But guess what? It's like every other cool new thing, THE JAPANESE ALREADY HAVE IT! Sega Toylet was on display at expos last year, and right now are being tested out in Tokyo metro stations. Their games, of course, are crazier. One has a little statue boy going into a cup. If you don't fill the cup, you fail. Another puts you in a competition with the guy who went last time. The harder you go, the more milk shoots out your nose. That looks painful. And there is a naughty version, where you are a pervy cloud that is trying to blow up a girl's skirt. I think these games are a good idea for several reasons, the first being that some guys are terrible at aiming, or just don't care. The monitors display ads when not in game mode. This is a painless way to make advertising money. And it's proven to increase drink sales at bars! But think of how it could change the whole bar experience. Super Mario vs PETA: animal rights group targets video game

www.nma.tv PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is known for their very public, sometimes controversial, crusades against all forms of animal cruelty. Now they have trained their sights on a video game, Nintendo's Super Mario 3D Land. In the game, the popular character Mario is able to wear a "tanooki suit," resembling a Japanese tanuki raccoon dog. PETA claims the suit encourages the wearing of fur products and has created a website in protest. The site features a parody game where players assume the role of a skinned "tanooki" who tries to wrestle his pelt back from an evil Mario lookalike. People in the gaming press have been quick to point out that Mario is never seen harming a tanuki in the course of the game. One website called PETA's outrage "absurd and unresearched." The tanooki suit first made an appearance in the 1988 title, Super Mario Bros. 3. It allows Mario, among other abilities, to transform into a stone statue, rendering him invincible to enemy attacks. Nintendo decided to bring the feature back for Super Mario 3D Land, which is available for the Nintendo 3DS this month. One of the most beloved and enduring video game series in the history of the medium, Super Mario Bros. chronicles the heroics of Mario and his brother Luigi, two plumbers who happen upon an enchanted world called Mushroom Kingdom. Super injunction footballer Ryan Gigg's Twitter war

nma.tv Manchester United star Ryan Giggs cheated on his wife with reality TV star Imogen Thomas, then obtained a super-injunction to prevent media outlets from publishing his name in relation to the incident. That gagged British newspapers — with the exception of the Scotland Herald, which published his photo — but it didn't stop thousands of Twitter users or Wikipedia from naming him. Giggs is now suing Twitter over the super-injunction. His actions have likely drawn more attention to his affair than it would have received had he not tried to gag the media in the first place. Anyway, trying to hid things from the Internet doesn't help. It just makes the Internet angry. It's called the Streistand effect. And it's on Wikipedia as well. That makes it official. Cost of Thanksgiving climbs to $50!

www.nma.tv The cost of Thanksgiving dinner is rising. The American Farm Bureau Federation says a Thanksgiving meal for 10 people will increase $5.73 to $49.20. That is a 13 percent rise over last year. The American Farm Bureau Federation says the the increase is the largest in 26 years of price tracking. Much of the increase comes from the cost of the turkey. A 16-pound turkey costs $21.57, up 22 percent from last year. This is due higher turkey demand and feed costs. Other items included in the survey are bread stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls with butter, peas, cranberries, a relish tray of carrots and celery, pumpkin pie with whipped cream, and beverages of coffee and milk. The first Thanksgiving was essentially free. When the pilgrims didn't bring enough food to America, the Native Americans saved their butts. 'Google X' research facility and its secret projects

www.nma.tv A New York Times article reports that Google is researching new, highly-innovative technologies in a secret facility dubbed "Google X." Its exact location is unknown, as sources say the work done by Google X is as guarded as the international espionage work performed by the CIA. Among the projects rumored to be in development is a so-called "space elevator," which could ferry people and equipment between the Earth and outer space without the use of rockets. More grounded ideas include wiring household appliances like light bulbs and coffee pots to the Internet so they can be controlled remotely. Google is even said to be preparing its driverless car technology, which the company began testing on California roads last year, for a broad consumer push. There is also a large emphasis on artificial intelligence and robot technology that goes far beyond just "Android." Google has reportedly enlisted the help of some of the world's brightest minds from top companies like Microsoft and Nokia and educational institutions like Carnegie Mellon and MIT. Sebastian Thrun, Andrew Ng and Johnny Chung Lee are all said to be working on high-concept initiatives. Despite the press, the very existence of Google X has not been acknowledged by the company's top brass, Sergery Brin and Larry Page. Sources at Google who spoke to The Times about the project did so under condition of anonymity.

Georgetown brawls with Chinese basketball team

nma.tv Georgetown University is known for producing diplomats. But yesterday its basketball team was involved in a diplomatic incident, when a game in China ended in a brawl. The Hoyas faced the Bayi Rockets as part of a "goodwill tour" of China. Tensions ran high from the start, and officials clearly favored the Rockets. Several Bayi players were continually screaming, even at Georgetown's coach. Late in the game, Georgetown's Jason Clark took exception to a hard foul by Bayi's Hu Ke, and the bench-clearing brawl ensued. Chinese basketball teams are notorious for playing dirty. Was Baiyi, a professional army team, upset it couldn't intimidate college students? Or were they sending a message, as Georgetown's tour coincides with Vice President Joe Biden's visit and the arrival of new ambassador Gary Locke? Georgetown and Bayi meet again on Sunday night in Shanghai.

Li Anne: Remember when Yahoo! was relevant?

www.nma.tv This week, Carol Bartz was fired as CEO of Yahoo! via phone call. That's messed up! Well, it's probably because she's a scary lady who swears a lot! Oh, Yahoo. In 2000, your stock closed at $118.75 a share. Right now? $12.91 a share. It all started out with a website directory named "David and Jerry's Guide to the World Wide Web". In 1995, this site became "Yahoo!" Yahoo search was a pioneer, the first of its kind. It was ok but rather slow. Google blew them out of the water. Before Gmail took off, Yahoo! email was #1 but it was full of spam! Now, people use their Yahoo account to sign up for services, so the spam will go there purposely. Remember Yahoo 360? Me either. That was their attempt at a social networking site. If you prefer a small, intimate audience, you can post on Yahoo video. Seems like they tried, but not hard enough! Three years ago, Microsoft tried to buy Yahoo! for $44.6 billion. Yahoo! said, "No! You guys don't value us!" They're eating their words now, I think! If Yahoo! follows the fate of certain other websites, it will never shut down, but hang on forever. So you can keep using your yahoo email address forever, you rebellious hipster you! Thanks for watching!

Bin Laden Dead: Video animation

US forces caught Osama Bin Laden on Sunday in Pakistan. America found him by tracking one his most trusted couriers. Bin Laden was living in a compound near Pakistan's military academy. US helicopters converged on the compound around 1:30am. One chopper was damaged, and US forces destroyed it. Twenty-five Navy Seals stormed the compound and killed Bin Laden in a firefight. Facial recognition and DNA testing were used to identify him. His body was taken to Afghanistan, then buried at sea.

Louis CK tells fans "ask me anything" on Reddit

www.nma.tv Comedian Louis CK candidly answered fans' questions on the popular website Reddit during one of its so-called "ask me anything" sessions. The 44 year old performer-writer-director, whose birth name is Louis Szekely, gave insights into his life, both professional and personal. He explained acquiring total creative control over his critically-acclaimed FX comedy "Louie" was in exchange for a shoestring budget and little personal profit. He openly pined for the day he could afford to make another movie, or even buy a house. But, true to his stand up act, Louis balanced sobering reality with general silliness, admitting his least favorite memory was wetting his pants as a child in front of "everybody," which inexplicably included former US President Jimmy Carter and the Pope. The Q&A was part of a promotional push for Louis's new stand up special, Live at the Beacon Theater, which he has made available exclusively on his website for the unheard of price of US$5. It is the latest project in a storied career both before and behind the camera, which includes writing for landmark television series like Late Night with Conan O'Brien and Saturday Night Live, and directing the 2001 comedy film Pootie Tang alongside friend and collaborator Chris Rock.
