On October 7, the State Department held its final public hearing on the Keystone XL pipeline. A rally was held at noon outside the State Dept to protest the pipeline and the State Dept.'s cozy relationship with TransCanada lobbyists. Moments after it ended, Occupy DC marched by and some NoKXL protesters (including a giant inflatable planet) joined in to demand the end of corporate influence over politics. On November 6, 2011, a year away from the presidential election, more than 12000 concerned citizens, activists, groups, and allies gathered to participate in the largest environmental demonstration of the Obama administration. Together, we encircled the White House three times around as an act of solidarity against the proposed Keystone XL pipeline. A rally was held in Burnaby BC in solidarity with the protestors at the White House who are facing arrest for their opposition to the Keystone XL pipeline. The BC rally (tinyurl.com took place around the Kinder Morgan oil tanker terminal which the company has stated they would like to expand along with their pipeline that runs from the tar sands in Alberta to Canada's west coast. Organizers said "wherever big oil companies try to expand the tar sands with this kind of infrastructure we will be there to say no. From BC to DC we are standing up against unsustainable and irresponsible tar sands development."
