Vincenzo Bellini - Symphony from "Norma" www.manfredipomar.com _________________________________________ Vincenzo Salvatore Carmelo Francesco Bellini (November 3, 1801 -- September 23, 1835) was a Sicilian opera composer. Known for his flowing melodic lines, Bellini was the quintessential composer of Bel canto opera. Born in Catania, Sicily, Bellini was a child prodigy from a highly musical family and legend has it he could sing an aria of Valentino Fioravanti at eighteen months, began studying music theory at two, the piano at three, and by the age of five could, apparently, play well. His first composition is said to have dated from his sixth year. Regardless of the veracity of these claims, it is certain that Bellini grew up in a musical household and that a career as a musician was never in doubt. Having learned from his grandfather, Bellini left provincial Catania in June 1819 to study at the conservatory in Naples, with a stipend from the municipal government of Catania. By 1822 he was in the class of the director Nicolò Zingarelli, studying the masters of the Neapolitan school and the orchestral works of Haydn and Mozart. It was the custom at the Conservatory to introduce a promising student to the public with a dramatic work: the result was Bellini's first opera Adelson e Salvini an opera semiseria that was presented at the Conservatory's theater. Gordon Yeager and Norma Stock were married in State Center, IA on May 26, 1939. Merely hours after Norma's high school graduation. After 72 years of marriage Gordon and Norma passed away hand in hand exactly 60 minutes apart in Marshalltown at MMSC on Oct. 12, 2011 Thank you Gordon and Norma for being such shining examples of what marriage should look like, til death do we part!!! I am still calling these postings a contest, even though I don't think there is much interest in the videos for that reason. This is not judging singers against each other, rather it is putting down a score for the interpretation of those artists at that time. Anyway, one of my favorite "contests" was the Norma "Casta Diva" contest. So I naturally wanted to create some sort of compensation for those missing videos. I hope everyone enjoys. This video features Montserrat Caballé singing Casta Diva from Bellini´s opera Norma during a televised concert held at Kings Dock in 1992 on the occasion of the visit to Liverpool of the Tall Ships. The Tall Ships Race and the concert also commemorated the 500th anniversary of the arrival in the New World of Christopher Columbus. The concert was performed by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra directed by Robin Stapleton and Julian Reynolds - and featured Montserrat Caballé, Julia Migenes, Mario Frangoulis, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Justino Diaz, Alfredo Krauss, Dennis O´Neil, Rita Hunter and Paco Peña. Since graduating from Barnard College in 1963, Ms. Tharp has choreographed more than one hundred and thirty five dances, five Hollywood movies, directed and choreographed four Broadway shows. She received one Tony Award, two Emmy Awards, nineteen honorary doctorates, the Vietnam Veterans of America President's Award, the 2004 National Medal of the Arts, the 2008 Jerome Robbins Prize, a 2008 Kennedy Center Honor. Her many grants include the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthu Fellowship. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and an Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 1992 Ms. Tharp wrote her autobiography Push Comes to Shove. In 2003 she wrote, The Creative Habit: Learn it and Use it for Life. In 2009 she wrote, The Collaborative Habit: Life Lessons for Working Together both of which were published by Simon and Schuster.
