Tom Crone, who was legal manager of the paper, said Murdoch would only have given Crone authority to settle a lawsuit against News of the World if he had understood that there had been more illegal eavesdropping. Crone was one of four former executives grilled by British lawmakers as they try to determine whether Murdoch misled them about the scale of illegal eavesdropping at News of the World. Murdoch, the son of News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch, has repeatedly told lawmakers that an investigation showed no evidence of widespread phone hacking at News of the World. And he stood by his testimony in a statement after the parliamentary hearing Tuesday. James Murdoch called the testimony of Crone and Colin Myler, the former editor of the paper, "unclear and contradictory," and he said he had given parliament "an accurate account of events." Mr Murdoch junior told the Commons culture, media and sport committee earlier this week that he was "not aware" of an email suggesting phone hacking went wider. But Colin Myler, who edited the paper until it was closed over the scandal, and legal manager Tom Crone have released a statement saying Mr Murdoch was "mistaken". Mr Murdoch has said he stands by his evidence to the select committee. The issue hinges on a settlement paid to Professional Footballers' Association chief executive Gordon Taylor in 2008, worth a reported £700000, after he brought a damages claim against the NOTW. At the committee hearing, MP Tom Watson asked James Murdoch: "When you signed off the Taylor payment, did you see or were you made aware of the full Neville email, the transcript of the hacked voicemail messages?" I mean, there's people who have much better records - my records are non-existent. There are people who actually have tapes and transcripts they did for Andy Coulson." Top executives from Rupert Murdoch down today faced devastating allegations of a phone hacking cover-up at News International, after former royal correspondent Clive Goodman sensationally claimed that the matter was 'widely discussed' at the News of the World. MPs said they were 'likely' to recall James Murdoch to give further evidence to the committee examining the hacking scandal, as fresh information emerged which appeared to implicate a raft of top executives and undermine their evidence to Parliament. In a letter penned by Mr Goodman in 2007 and only made public today, he claimed that hacking was 'widely discussed' in the newsroom until editor at the time Andy Coulson banned all reference to the subject. The allegations could prove to be very damaging to Mr Coulson and News International chief James Murdoch, who both claimed they believed the hacking was the sole domain of 'rogue reporter' Mr Goodman. CNN's Dan Rivers and Jim Clancy discuss the implications of accusations made by a former News of the World reporter.

A senior journalist, who worked on the paper in the last 10 years, has told the BBC's Newsnight programme he knew about a number of celebrities that were being targeted through phone hacking. The said celebrities are thought to include actress Liz Hurley and footballer Rio Ferdinand. The journalist said: "One afternoon in the newsroom I saw Liz Hurley's phone being hacked and a reporter listen to her mobile phone messages and take a note of what was said. It was a Thursday and I was told that there wasn't much on there - just something about lunch from another woman, so they would keep trying before the weekend to see what they could find." He went on to say the technique of phone hacking was used on a 'daily basis'. He said: "Designated reporters would be doing it pretty much every day. One reporter who was very good at it was called the 'master of the dark arts'. At one point in 2004 it seemed like it was the only way people were getting scoops. If they didn't just randomly hack people in the news, they would use it to stand up stories that people had denied." News International Are 'On The Run' - NOTW Phone Hacking *NEW*

Rebekah Brooks, chief executive of News International, has resigned, the company has confirmed. Her departure follows days of increasing pressure to step down as the phone hacking crisis grew. In a statement, she said she felt a "deep responsibility for the people we have hurt". News Corporation is to take out national press adverts this weekend to apologise for what it described as "the wrongdoings at the News of the World". Prime Minister David Cameron thinks that Rebekah Brooks's resignation was "the right decision", his official spokesman said. Rebekah Brooks was the paper's editor between 2000 and 2003, during which time murder victim Milly Dowler's phone was hacked. She said she wanted to "reiterate how sorry I am for what we now know to have taken place". Her statement went on: "I have believed that the right and responsible action has been to lead us through the heat of the crisis. However my desire to remain on the bridge has made me a focal point of the debate. "This is now detracting attention from all our honest endeavours to fix the problems of the past." Ms Brooks, 43, who had been with News International for 22 years, bowed to the international pressure piling up on the company. She has been replaced by Tom Mockridge, who was in charge of News Corporation's Italian broadcasting arm. Steve Hewlett, a media analist says that everyday brings a new concession. The initial police investigation led to the jailing of News of the World royal editor Clive Goodman and private investigator Glenn Mulcaire. But it was accepted that they were an isolated case. He spoke after this week's revelation that the mobile phone of murdered school girl Milly Dowler had in fact been among those targeted. Mr Murdoch had told MPs he was "not aware" of an email suggesting phone hacking was not limited to one reporter at the News Of The World (NOTW), which was published by News International. But the NOTW's former editor and chief lawyer said they had informed Mr Murdoch about the email. Colin Myler, who edited the paper until it closed, and legal manager Tom Crone, have released a statement saying Mr Murdoch was "mistaken". However, the son of media mogul Rupert Murdoch has said he stands by his evidence. The accusations stem from a settlement paid to Professional Footballers' Association chief executive Gordon Taylor in 2008, reportedly to the sum of £700000, after he brought a damages claim against the NOTW. At the committee hearing, MP Tom Watson asked James Murdoch: "When you signed off the Taylor payment, did you see or were you made aware of the full Neville email, the transcript of the hacked voicemail messages?" He replied: "No, I was not aware of that at the time." In their statement, Mr Myler and Mr Crone said: "Just by way of clarification relating to Tuesday's CMS Select Committee hearing, we would like to point out that ...
