Tri Nova Scotia Celtic Fiddle Dance Story & Song

We are four Bostonians who perform celtic folk music from Nova Scotia. We all have at least one parent from Nova Scotia and spent lots of time there growing up. We also embrace being from Boston and have been influenced by the rich Irish traditions of our area. Our fiddler Doug Lamey is the grandson of Boston Cape Breton fiddling legend Bill Lamey. He's been playing since he was a kid and has studied with some of the greats from both the Cape Breton tradition (Buddy MacMaster) and Irish fiddle scene (Tommy Peoples). www.douglamey.com We are lucky to have two of the best stepdancers in the Boston area, Pam Campbell and Christine Morrison. Pam is the daughter of fiddling legend John Campbell. Christine is the daughter of Peggy Morrison who is president of the Gaelic Club in Watertown, MA. Pam & Christine have been dancing together for 16 years and have shared the stage with Natalie MacMaster and Ashley MacIsaac to drop some names. I sing in both English and Scottish Gaelic. I play guitar and Irish Tin whistle and make my living as a musician/storyteller. I am steeped in Irish music on my dads side of the family (Clifford's in Sliabh Luachra) and Scottish on moms side. I recieved my MA in Folklore from Memorial University in Newfoundland. www.cliffmcgann.com We've all played together informally over the years but are finally making it official. We've settled on the name The Boston Kiltics as it captures our love of Scottish folk music but also the fact we are from Boston and ...

The shipwreck of the RMS Atlantic Nova Scotia (1873)

Place sunk Mosher Island, 30 km SE of Halifax Cause Stormy weather, misnavigation and Collided against rocks. Depth 25m Loss of life 547 passengers On 20 March 1873 the Atlantic departed on her 19th voyage from Liverpool with 952 people on board, of whom 835 were passengers. En route, the crew decided to make port at Halifax, Nova Scotia to replenish coal for the boilers. During the approach to Halifax on the evening of March 31 the captain and 3rd officer were on the bridge until midnight, while the Atlantic made her way through a storm, proceeding at 12 knots (22 km/h) for the entrance of Halifax harbour, experiencing intermittent visibility and heavy seas. Unbeknownst to the crew or passengers, the Atlantic was approximately 12½ miles (20 km) off-course to the west of Halifax Harbour. Officers failed to take soundings, post a masthead lookout, reduce speed or wake the captain as they approached the unfamiliar coast. They somehow did not spot the Sambro Lighthouse, the large landfall lighthouse which warns mariners of the rocky shoals to the west of the harbour entrance. At 2:00 am local time on 1 April 1873, the Atlantic struck an underwater rock called Marr's Head 50 metres from Meagher's Island, Nova Scotia. Lifeboats were lowered by the crew but were all washed away or smashed as the ship quickly filled with water and flipped on its side. Survivors were forced to swim or climb ropes first to a wave-swept rock and then to a barren shore. Residents of the tiny fishing ...

Jesse - Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever - Goodbye My Friend

A goodbye tribute to Jesse, my Nova Scotia Duck Toller. I will miss him with all my heart and soul. 2001 - 2011. From Joshua.... NOTE: Joshua is a special needs young man with cerebral palsy. Jesse, a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever had his life cut short when stricken with canine leukemia. Jesse was Josh's one true best friend -- he loved Josh unconditionally and vice versa. When we first got a Toller, we were concerned that this high-energy, excitable breed might not have been the best choice for Josh. But we soon learned that although Jess would jump up and flatten anyone who got in the way of his excitement, with Josh this sensitive and intuitive creature was gentle and loving. Out of Josh's extreme and distressing sadness and sorrow, came the surprising ability to put this little tribute together on his own with no direction. It was not only astounding but once again proved that love has no bounds. July 14, 2011: The response to Joshua's little tribute to his Jesse has been awesome. Thank you to all who have made such touching and loving comments. I think we've cried nearly as much over some of the expressions of loss that others have experienced as we've done over the loss of Jesse. It makes one realize that dogs are, indeed, not "just dogs" after all, but an integral and necessary part of our families. August 7 , 2011:Thank you so much for loving my dog.

Nova Scotia's South Shore

Nova Scotia, on the south east of Canada, is a place of intrigue and beauty, and the regions' South Shore epitomises that. Not only are there dozens of proud lighthouses standing watch along this rugged coast there are also quaint small towns, like Lunenburg and Shelburne, with historic streetscapes so unchanged you feel as though you might just have entered a centuries-wide time warp. This video shows a few of the highlights of the South Shore, for example: Mahone Bay Mahone Bay is considered by many as one of the most beautiful towns in Canada. Situated on a bay of more than 100 islands is a treasury of history, culture and 19th century architecture. The charming main street hosts an assortment of art galleries, specialty shops and living museums - all within an easy stroll. Romantic restaurants, comfortable small inns, golfing and a full service spa complement the serenity and natural beauty of Mahone Bay to make this a very special holiday destination. Jonathan Edwards: Nova Scotia

The word "legend" is often used to describe veteran folk/rocker Jonathan Edwards, whose 1971 million-selling song "Sunshine" ("go away today...") brought him instant fame. Since that time, Jonathan has been going strong. He has recorded 15 albums, collaborated with artists like Emmylou Harris and Jimmy Buffett, performed in theater, commercials, movie soundtracks, and a TV series, and produced records. In this program, Jonathan talks about his career path and performs his song "Nova Scotia". We also see historical footage of Jonathan on his farm in Nova Scotia. Also, check out Jonathan's MiND studio performances of "One Day Closer" and "Shanty" and of course "Sunshine". www.mindtv.org

This improvisation was completely unrehearsed. in fact, I think this recording is the first time Hank and I had ever played together. Many thanks to Rob Litke for filming for us.
