Nuclear vs Green - World - November 2010

It's an ongoing debate around the world - nuclear power or green energy? Nuclear developments continue to inspire global protests, but are the magic words 'renewable energy' really a viable alternative? We're told that today's nuclear plants are environmentally friendly, but they still "leave a 100000 year disposal problem". After Chernobyl, scientists worldwide are trying to develop a way to store radioactive waste safely for a million years. The intense opposition to this ambitious aim is clear: "humanity is not yet equipped to deal with this responsibly". But is nuclear power that easy to replace? In theory, if 1% of the Sahara was covered in solar panels, it could provide enough power for the whole world. Despite the vast cost and complex logistics of running a solar plant in Morocco this idea may yet have potential, but it isn't a fairytale solution. ORF

G8 Summit Concludes: US, France Want Stimulus & Oppose Austerity - Greece Wanted in Eurozone

A summit of the G8 leading industrialized nations has ended in compromise with leaders striving to balance European austerity - an approach long driven by German Chancellor Angela Merkel - with a dose of US-style stimulus seen as vital to healing ailing eurozone economies. Before the summit, US President Barack Obama had made clear he was aligning himself with the new French president's drive for more economic stimulus. However the belt-tightening programs spearheaded by Germany and the UK also had significant political support. All leaders, including Russia's Dmitry Medvedev who was standing in for President Putin, agreed that Greece should remain in the Eurozone. But, while the eurozone debt crisis topped the agenda over the weekend, President Obama also used the opportunity to refocus on efforts to resolve the on-going crisis with Iran. The issue will be the focus of attention again next week, as a second round of Iran talks take place in in Baghdad. German Chancelor Angela Merkel: "The important message is that consolidation and growth are two sides of the same coin. And that's a discussion that everyone has focused on in equal measures." US President Barack Obama: "We agreed upon the importance of a strong and cohesive euro zone and affirmed our interest in Greece staying in the euro zone, while respecting its commitments. Of course we also recognize the painful sacrifices that the Greek people are making at this difficult time. "Last night we had a chance to discuss ...

Fukushima Disaster Documentary: Is Nuclear Power Safe? Chernobyl, and Thorium 16 Sept 11

Documentary covering Fukushima, Chernobyl, and alternative nuclear power generation including Thorium. BBC Horizon. Broadcast 14 september 2011 Length 57 minutes 25 seconds Six months after the explosions at the Fukushima nuclear plant and the release of radiation there, Professor Jim Al-Khalili sets out to discover whether nuclear power is safe. He begins in Japan, where he meets some of the tens of thousands of people who have been evacuated from the exclusion zone. He travels to an abandoned village just outside the zone to witness a nuclear clean-up operation. Jim draws on the latest scientific findings from Japan and from the previous explosion at Chernobyl to understand how dangerous the release of radiation is likely to be and what that means for our trust in nuclear power. documentary.wmv

Japan closes last reactor, 'energy crisis looms'

Japan is set to turn off its last working reactor this weekend, leaving one of the world's largest industrial nations without a source of nuclear energy for the first time in almost 50 years. The government has bowed to public pressure following last year's disaster at the Fukushima power plant after the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami. Fallout from Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant - Richard Broinowski

Journalist, author, diplomat and Adjunct Professor from the University of Sydney, Richard Broinowski tells the story of the Fukushima daiichi nuclear power plant disaster. His talk looks back to the development of the Nuclear Village in Japan, including General Electric and the American state's successful efforts to sell nuclear energy to Japan under the auspices of selling them energy self-sufficiency. Richard speaks Japanese, has lived in Japan and made many visits. He has thoroughly researched the incident and subsequent events and impacts. He is confident that Japan has, post-Fukushima, 'turned a corner' and notes that many Japanese prefectures are becoming less inclined to restart reactors in the wake of the Japanese people's diminishing faith in the technology and its various safeguards. Will we see Japan embrace renewable energy production with their famous reputation for innovation and stoicism? What does the Fukushima disaster mean for the future of the nuclear power industry beyond Japanese shores? What of the Australian uranium mining industry, and its commercial viability? Richard Broinowski gave this public lecture in the Hawke Centre at the University of South Australia in February of 2012, ahead of the release of his forthcoming book on the subject.

Earth Focus Episode 32 - Nuclear Power: Risks and Consequences

(Earth Focus: Episode 32) Nuclear Power: Risks and Consequences, an original Earth Focus investigative report, looks at the untold stories behind three of the world's largest nuclear disasters: Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima. According to government and industry officials, no one died as a result of Three Mile Island and only low doses of radiation -- equivalent to a single chest XRay were released. But many local residents disagree and cite medical evidence that radiation released from the Three Mile Island reactor was severe enough to cause disease and death. It's been 30 years but the controversy continues. Chernobyl was the worse nuclear disaster in history. A new book, Chernobyl: Consequences of a Catastrophe says that almost a million people died as a result of the nuclear accident -- not 4000 as The World Health Organization and the International Atomic Energy Agency claim. A screw up or a coverup? Earth Focus looks at evidence that links radioactive exposure to diminished intelligence, premature aging and a variety of other health conditions. Given the severity of the accident in Fukushima and the inability of the government to provide action to safeguard large portions of its population, the Japanese government moved the goal posts on what is considered safe radiation exposure for children and nuclear workers. Japanese organized crime, the Yakuza, is now becoming actively involved in the cleanup of radioactive waste.

But with each gloomy media prediction, the nuclear industry can boast: we've got the clean answer. This documentary looks at different approaches to nuclear power. It focuses on Australia and Scandinavia - where attitudes couldn't be more different. While Australia derives 80% of its energy from coal, half of Sweden's power is nuclear. This doc holds the answers to why we persist with nuclear power.

Japan's Nuclear Disaster Explained

Donate: american.redcross.org In which Hank explains nuclear power and the situation at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant in Japan. In short, fission products continually decaying in both active and spent fuel rods create enough heat to melt themselves. The coolant systems that would prevent this from happening were disabled by the tsunami. Cracks in the fuel rods created an environment allowing hydrogen to form, which concentrated and then exploded several times destroying both the primary and secondary containment structures at at least one reactor. The result is that the reactor needs to remain cooled or else radiation from the meltdown will be released to the environment in significant quantities. The people working to keep the reactor from overheating are risking their lives to do so, and we all hope they will be able to stabilize the reactor without harm.
