Royal Navy - Heart of Oak

"Heart of Oak" is the official march of the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom. It is also the official march of the Canadian Navy, as well as the Canadian Forces' Naval Operations Branch. The music was composed by Dr William Boyce and the words were written by the 18th Century English actor David Garrick. Heart of Oak was originally written as an opera. The "wonderful year" referenced in the first verse is 1759-60, during which British forces were victorious in several significant battles: the Battle of Lagos on 19 August 1759, the battle of Quebec City on 13 September 1759 and the Battle of Quiberon Bay on 20 November 1759, foiling a French invasion project. These were followed a few months later by the Battle of Wandiwash in India on 22 January 1760. Britain's continued success in the war boosted the songs popularity. Come, cheer up, my lads, 'tis to glory we steer, To add something more to this wonderful year; To honour we call you, as freemen not slaves, For who are so free as the sons of the waves? (Chorus sung once...) Heart of oak are our ships, jolly tars are our men, we always are ready; Steady, boys, steady! We'll fight and we'll conquer again and again. We never see the French but we wish them to stay, They always see us and they wish us away; If they run, we will follow, we will drive them ashore, And if they won't fight, we can do no more. (Chorus sung once...) They swear they'll invade us, these terrible foes, They frighten our women, our children and beaus ...

Acorn to Oak filmed over an 8 month period time-lapse

Acorn to Oak seedling filmed over a period of 8 months. Filmed by Neil Bromhall for www.rightplants4me.co.uk The acorn was collected in September and filmed in an underground set using a 2 hour interval between exposures. The acorn split soon after it was planted and continued to split during the winter months. In January the first sign of root growing could be seen followed in February by the emergence of shoot. In March the shoot broke through the soil surface. The leaves formed between March and April. This is an example of hypogeal germination. Filmed on Nikon D300. 55mm macro nikkor lens and studio flash with growlight for top shot. This sequence accompanies my interactive plant identification website www.rightplants4me.co.uk Music 'Pendulum' by Oliver Ledbury

Wye Oak covers The Kinks

Wye Oak--Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack--asked us so politely if they could bring a friend along to help them cover "Strangers" by The Kinks, and who could refuse when that friend was Shearwater's Jonathan Meiburg? The two bands had been touring together, and Wye Oak were working the song out on stage every night. It only made sense that Meiburg would step in to give it some extra oomph. Wye Oak's latest is an EP called My Neighbor / My Creator; it's available digitally now and will be out on CD on June 8.

Oak Island Money Pit Mystery

I recently learned about Oak Island and after having failed to find a newer account of this mystery on YT, I decided to provide it here for the purpose of commentary, criticism, news reporting, research, teaching and scholarship. This brief segment was cut from a History channel series called "ancient aliens" ( www.history.com ). Not mentioned here, is that some progress has been made, one core drill revealed small fragments of gold that look as if they had come from chain mail armor but further down there is a plate of iron. Whatever was buried there, one thing is certain, the design of the pit is amazing.

Mysterious Treasure on Oak Island: 1/5

Visit www.zigguraths.com - All free documentaries about ancient civilizations! Forty feet below, two million pounds are buried." This cryptic inscription on a stone uncovered at the 100-foot level of the Oak Island "money pit" has kept treasure hunters digging for almost 200 years. Over the centuries, Oak Island, which lies just off the coast of Nova Scotia, has gobbled up the resources and lives of many men without producing a single doubloon. Designed by some ancient engineer, the pit is a complex hole with timber crosspieces every 10 feet. Near the 100-foot level, any attempt to break through brings the Atlantic Ocean rushing in. So far, all efforts to solve the puzzle of the protective design have failed. Even using the most modern technology, no one has been able to get through to those two million pounds... 50 billion dollars! Who built it and why? Some surprising answers in this video!
