Salk study may offer drug-free intervention to prevent obesity

It turns out that when we eat may be as important as what we eat. Scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies have found that regular eating times and extending the daily fasting period may override the adverse health effects of a high-fat diet and prevent obesity, diabetes and liver disease in mice. In a paper published May 17 in Cell Metabolism, scientists from Salk's Regulatory Biology Laboratory reported that mice limited to eating during an 8-hour period are healthier than mice that eat freely throughout the day, regardless of the quality and content of their diet. The study sought to determine whether obesity and metabolic diseases result from a high-fat diet or from disruption of metabolic cycles. "It's a dogma that a high-fat diet leads to obesity and that we should eat frequently when we are awake," says Satchidananda Panda, an associate professor in the Regulatory Biology Laboratory and senior author of the paper. "Our findings, however, suggest that regular eating times and fasting for a significant number of hours a day might be beneficial to our health." Learn more at: www.salk.edu

Obese Woman Sues Southwest Airlines

The woman at the centre of a 'too fat to fly' controversy has announced that she is suing Southwest Airlines, which refused to allow her on a flight because of her size. New Orleans resident Kenlie Tiggeman is taking on the airlines controversial 'Customers of Size' policy which requires passengers to buy a second seat if they can't fit between the 17-inch wide armrests. In her quest to seek an injunction against the Dallas-headquartered carrier, Ms Tiggeman alleges that Southwest ignored her 'constitutional rights' and demonstrates 'discriminatory actions towards obese customers'. While she is not seeking monetary damages from the airline, Ms Tiggeman has claimed that she wants to enact an industry wide standard for rules to be put in place clearly stating the official policy of all US air companies. 'We need to know what the rules are,' she said. 'We need to know if we need one seat or two, because this eyeballing happening at the gate is incredibly discriminatory, and it's so unnecessary.' Ms Tiggeman rose to national prominence last year when a Southwest Airlines employee declared that she was 'too fat to fly,' and asked her to buy a second seat.

The Obesity Epidemic: Why Have We Failed?

Air date: Wednesday, February 15, 2012, 3:00:00 PM Timedisplayed is Eastern Time, Washington DC Local Category: Wednesday Afternoon Lectures Description: Lewis Kuller will discuss how obesity is an example of a common source epidemic due to changes or introduction of new behaviors, ie lifestyles, which result in introduction of new "agents," such as fast foods or calorically dense foods, into a receptive environment. The development of technology for mass production of low-cost, high-calorically dense foods has resulted in economic advantage, mass marketing, and social acceptability. Over time, this has caused increased risks of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, etc. Successful control of the obesity epidemic requires an understanding of the interrelationship between the host, the agents and the environmental factors. The NIH Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series includes weekly scientific talks by some of the top researchers in the biomedical sciences worldwide. US city moves to combat obesity epidemic

The World Health Organization descibes obesity as a global epidemic - with hundreds of millions of people suffering from it worldwide. In New York, one of many US states where fatty and conveniently cheap fast food restaurant chains are a major cause for the country's giant obesity rates - organisations are using various ways to make healthy meals more accessible to the public. Experts say the government must subsidise healthy foods like fruits and vegetables, instead of popular fast food companies, to better combat the problem. Al Jazeera's Scott Heidler reports from New York.

Junk food main cause of obesity, diabetes: CSE - NewsX

A study done by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) on junk food and nutrition has disclosed that most of the junk foods contain very high levels of trans fats, salts and sugar - which inevitably lead to severe ill health and diseases like obesity and diabetes. Junk foods have enough trans fats, salt and sugar to lead us to an early onset of diseases in the young. And what's worse, neither the companies, nor the government is bothering to tell us what these foods contain, said a new Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) study. Obesity Industrial Complex

As the debate over cutting government spending rages on, billions of dollars of taxpayer money are wasted each year on junk food. Between 1995 and 2010, over 250 billion dollars was spent on subsidizing foods that are making Americans fat. The health effects are devastating. 75 percent of Americans are now considered overweight. One in five kids in the US are obese. Tonga battles obesity

Amputations and heart disease are at record levels in Tonga's hospitals. In a health system with no facilities to deal with kidney failure or cancer - 80 per cent of surgeries are linked to lifestyle related diseases, notably, obesity. Six out of every 10 Tongans are obese. On average, Tongans' eat four times the amount of food recommended by the country's health department. Tonga is now looking to ban or tax poor quality imported foods. Legislation may not teach restraint but keeping fatty foods off the menu is a step towards slimming down Tonga's spiraling health costs. Al Jazeera's Drew Ambrose reports from Nukualofa, Tonga.
