"Gabriel's Oboe" from one of the greatest film scores written 'The Mission'. The sublime 'Gabriel's Oboe' is the most famous part of the score. Scored for solo oboe with string backing, it is quite simply breathtaking. What is astonishing is that Morricone created the theme by writing the music in time with how Jeremy Irons pretended to play on camera

Albinoni - Oboe Concerto #2 in D Minor Op. 9

TOMASO ALBINONI (1671 - 1751) Concerto No. 2 for oboe and strings in D minor Op. 9 1. Allegro e no presto 2. Adagio (3:55) 3. Allegro (7:55) Performed by Il Fondamento Directed by Paul Dombrecht, oboe www.ilfondamento.be "Piazza San Marco with Jugglers" by Luca Carlevaris (1663 - 1730) *Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni was a Venetian Baroque composer. While famous in his day as an opera composer, he is mainly remembered today for his instrumental music, some of which is regularly recorded. Born in Venice, Republic of Venice, to Antonio Albinoni, a wealthy paper merchant in Venice, he studied violin and singing. Relatively little is known about his life, especially considering his contemporary stature as a composer, and the comparatively well-documented period in which he lived. In 1694 he dedicated his Opus 1 to the fellow-Venetian, Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni (grand-nephew of Pope Alexander VIII); Ottoboni was an important patron in Rome of other composers, such as Arcangelo Corelli. Albinoni was possibly employed in 1700 as a violinist to Charles IV, Duke of Mantua, to whom he dedicated his Opus 2 collection of instrumental pieces. In 1701 he wrote his hugely popular suites Opus 3, and dedicated that collection to Cosimo III de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany. In 1705, he was married; Antonino Biffi, the maestro di cappella of San Marco was a witness, and evidently was a friend of Albinoni's. Albinoni seems to have no other connection with that primary musical establishment in ...

Vivaldi - Oboe Concerto in D Minor RV454

ANTONIO VIVALDI (1678-1741) Concerto for oboe, strings, and basso continuo RV454 1. Allegro 2. Largo 3. Allegro Performed by Orchestra Barocca Zefiro Featuring Alfredo Bernardini, oboe *Alfredo Bernardini on the oboe used in this performance: Original woodwind instruments that have remained in good playing condition are very rare. However, for this recording we have had the priviledge of using one of the few surviving and perfectly functioning oboes that dates from the time of Vivaldi. The maker's name, 'ANCIVTI/A MILANO' is inscribed on the bell, and the date '1730' on the instrument's middle joint. The upper and middle joints are made of ebony, while the bell is rosewood; it has four ivory rings, three silver keys and a peculiar decoration consisting of round ebony inlays inserted in the ivory ring at the lower end of the bell. Its total length is 574mm, the minimum inner diameter being 5.9mm. Thanks to the African wood of which it is made, the instrument has retained its excellant qualities of timbre and intonation. Most 18th century oboes are made of boxwood, which warps with time becuase of its irregular texture; this is why over the centuries they have lost their original measurements and proportions, and with them the tuning as concieved by their maker. 18th century Italian woodwind instruments vary greatly in pitch and speaking length, thus testifying to the many different standards in use in the peninsula. The oboe played here works well at A = 415 Hz.

A. Marcello - Oboe Concerto in d minor (Marcel Ponseele, baroque oboe / Il Gardellino)

Alessandro Marcello (1684~1750) Concerto per Oboe, Archi e Basso Continuo in re minore, SF 935 - Op.1 (First published in 1717) I. Andante e spiccato - 00:00 II. Adagio - 03:32 III. Presto - 07:09 Marcel Ponseele (Baroque Oboe) Ensemble Il Gardellino Marcel Ponseele (conductor) A slightly older contemporary of Antonio Vivaldi, Marcello held concerts at his hometown of Venice. He composed and published several sets of concertos, including six concertos under the title of La Cetra (The Lyre), as well as cantatas, arias, canzonets, and violin sonatas. Marcello often composed under the pseudonym Eterio Stinfalico, his name as a member of the celebrated Arcadian Academy (Pontificia Accademia degli Arcadi). He died in Padua in 1747. Alessandro's brother was Benedetto Marcello (1686~1739), also a composer. Although his works are infrequently performed today, Marcello is regarded as a very competent composer. His La Cetra concertos are "unusual for their wind solo parts, concision and use of counterpoint within a broadly Vivaldian style," according to Grove, "placing them as a last outpost of the classic Venetian Baroque concerto." A concerto Marcello wrote in d minor for oboe, strings and basso continuo is perhaps his best-known work. Its worth was attested to by Johann Sebastian Bach who transcribed it for harpsichord (BWV 974). A number of editions have been published of the famous Oboe Concerto in d minor. The edition in c minor is credited to Benedetto Marcello.

ALESSANDRO MARCELLO (1684-1750) Concerto for oboe, strings and basso continuo in D minor 2. Adagio 3. Presto Performed by Concerto Italiano Directed by Rinaldo Alessandrini *Alessandro Marcello was an Italian nobleman and dilettante who dabbled in various areas, including poetry, philosophy, mathematics and, perhaps most notably, music. A slightly older contemporary of Antonio Vivaldi, Marcello held concerts at his hometown of Venice. He composed and published several sets of concertos, including six concertos under the title of La Cetra (The Lyre), as well as cantatas, arias, canzonets, and violin sonatas. Alessandro's brother was Benedetto Marcello, also a composer. **This concerto is part of Marcello's "concerti a cinque" published in 1716. It is one of the most performed oboe concertos in the oboe repertory. In the past, and continuing to the present, it has been mistakenly attributed to both Benedetto Marcello and Antonio Vivaldi.
