This short 8 minute film details our type 2 diabetes 26-week individualized fitness training program and observational study being conducted by Fitness Together studios of MA & RI. The results of the study will be shared with he American Diabetes Association (ADA) of Eastern New England. Regular blood glucose tests with a small prick on the finger are as important as the exercise in measuring safe success. "Diabetes is a major health issue affecting more than 24 million Americans, and our franchisees have told us they are happy to have a chance to make a difference," said Jeff Jervik, president and CEO of Fitness Together Holdings, Inc. "Through this observational study, we will better understand the impact of diet and exercise on diabetes control, high blood pressure, one's sense of well-being and the costs of medications," said Joan Hill, a registered dietitian, certified diabetes educator and licensed dietitian/nutritionist. Sensory World- Occupational therapy NBCOT study (observational skills acquisition and practice)

Practicing for the NBCOT???? Watch this video and try to name all of the senses being used. After that... look for PNF patterns... after that... what "dys" function do you see in anyone's movement? What do you see that is developmentally stimulating? What muscle groups are working? Can you name the musle and the function before the slide changes? How does the occupation of "PLAY" help the person learn? Notice the adult interaction with the children... It is SO IMPORTANT for adults to engage in "PLAY" too. Play is NOT just for kids. It helps ALL of our sensory systems to grow and keep neuropathways strong. So roll down hills, climb trees... anything... Just get up off of that thing and use those brain cells while you still have them! :-) Miss Chrissy

Study Links Aspirin to Colon Cancer Survival

This is the VOA Special English Health Report, from voaspecialenglish.com People since ancient times have used aspirin-like medicines to fight pain and reduce high body temperature. Modern research has found other uses for aspirin. The drug acts as a blood thinner. It can help blood flow past a blockage in an artery. Blockages can cause heart attacks or strokes. As a result, patients at risk of blockages might be advised by their doctors to take a low-strength aspirin every day. And research continues. A new study has shown that aspirin can improve survival in colon cancer patients. It involved about one thousand three hundred patients with colorectal cancer. The cancer had not spread to other parts of the body yet. The study compared patients who took three hundred twenty-five milligrams of aspirin at least two times a week with those who did not use aspirin. The study found that the aspirin users had an almost thirty percent lower risk of dying from their cancer. That was during an average of eleven years after the cancer was discovered. Andrew Chan of Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital led the study. Doctor Chan says the effects appeared especially strong among patients with tumors expressing an enzyme called COX-2. Two-thirds of colorectal cancers produce that chemical. Doctor Chan thinks the aspirin works by blocking it. The study appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association. It was an observational study. In a controlled study <b>...</b>

The obesity paradox in cardiology

By The International Chair on Cardiometabolic Risk. Dr. Debra Moser discusses the findings of an observational study on the obesity paradox. The study found that patients who are overweight or obese have a higher survival rate than individuals with a normal body mass index (BMI). The study looked at BMI and not waist circumference. In addition, Dr. Gabriel Steg reports the results of the RICO survey, which examined mortality over one year after an acute myocardial infarction as a function of BMI and abdominal obesity, as determined by waist circumference. The study showed that for any given BMI category, patients with an increased waist circumference had a much higher risk of death at one year than patients with a low waist circumference. Finally, Dr. Philip Barter and Dr. Paul Poirier explain that the obesity paradox may at first appear confusing, but when the data is further examined on the basis of abdominal obesity and not only BMI, it is clear that BMI alone no longer predicts mortality.

Hand Washing Is Up in Public Restrooms in US

I'm Alex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Health Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Every few years, two groups do a study of how many Americans wash their hands after using the toilet. These groups are the American Society for Microbiology and the American Cleaning Institute, formerly the Soap and Detergent Association. There was good news in the latest study. Researchers found that eighty-five percent of adults washed their hands in public restrooms in August. That was the most since the studies began in nineteen ninety-six. Researchers visited restrooms at a baseball park in Atlanta, Georgia and a science museum and aquarium in Chicago, Illinois. They also visited two train stations in New York City and a large farmers market in San Francisco, California. In all, they observed about six thousand adults. The researchers found that seventy-seven percent of men and ninety-three percent of women washed their hands. That was up from sixty-six percent of men and eighty-eight percent of women in the last study three years ago.The lowest rate of hand washing among men was at Turner Field, home of the Atlanta Braves baseball team. Only sixty-five percent of men washed their hands, compared to all but two percent of women. Chicago and San Francisco had the most hand washers -- eighty-nine percent of adults. Atlanta followed at eighty-two percent. New York had the lowest rate, at seventy-nine percent of the adults observed at Grand Central Terminal and Penn Station <b>...</b>

Student resource - 10 minute Animal Behaviour sampling video

This is a 10 minute practice video suitable for students learning the methods used in the study of animal behaviour. If you use this video for a class, we'll be very happy! Please tell us by leaving a comment or sending a message. Especially if you are a teacher or lecturer! The monkeys are the 'East Group' at the Living Links to Human Evolution Research Centre in Edinburgh Zoo. There are brown capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella) and common squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) living together in a mixed group (more information on the Living Links youtube channel and website www.living-links.org). The video is useful for trying out many different sampling techniques on individuals (the alpha male capuchin 'Popeye' is labelled throughout) or on groups. There are a number of different foraging, feeding and social behaviours featured, including a brief bit of courtship from one of our adult females (recognisable in this video because they have babies on their backs). The boxes were put into the enclosures by the keepers, they contain straw and some of the monkeys preferred foods. It is recommended that students watch the video first to develop some research questions, and then an ethogram (a list of behaviours) before starting to collect data. Methods for behavioural sampling can be found in: Altmann J. 1974. Observational study of behavior: sampling methods. Miracle in India: Hermit Survives Without Food and Water for 70 years...

An old Indian hermit who lived in a cave without food or water amazes scientists. 82-year-old Prahlad Jani claims not to have eaten or drunk anything for over seventy years and is still in perfect health. Jani grew up in Charod village of Gujarat state. He claims that a goddess blessed him when he was just eight. Since then he has meditated in the jungles and lived in caves in several places. Last month, doctors and scientist conducted tests on Jani during an observational study to unravel the mystery behind his claims. One doctor says that Janis survival and biological processes are miraculous. [Dr. Sudhir Shah, Neurologist, Sterling Hospital]: (English) "I want to tell you that we are all watching a miracle in the science, or biology so to say, because it is already 108 hours since Mataji's admission into this hospital and he has not eaten anything; he has not drunk a little drop of any kind of liquid but more importantly, he has not passed a drop of water or stool. That makes science very difficult." The study also revealed that Janis brain resembles that of a 25-year-old man. It will take around two months before there are any conclusive results from the numerous tests conducted on Jani.

Find and treat

TB is on the increase in London, and is especially prevalent in the homeless population, where other underlying conditions, and the use of alcohol and drugs, can mask symptoms. In this film we look at the work of the Find and Treat mobile unit - a dedicated team which scours the streets for cases of TB in the homeless. This also links to an economic analysis, published in the BMJ, which finds this is a very cost effective way of treatment and helps prevent further infections. BMJ research paper is free to access - Dedicated outreach service for hard to reach patients with tuberculosis in London: observational study and economic evaluation

Heidi Wolff's Research Presentation at Maryland State Beekeepers Association

Heidi Wolff discusses her research at the Fall meeting for the Maryland State Beekeepers Association on Urban vs. Rural Apiculture: An Observational Study of Pollen Quality and Content Aim: researching the differences between urban and rural apiaries, namely, looking at the pollen that is collected by the bees. She will sort the pollen and approximate the biodiversity of the available, blooming plants that the bees visit and gather pollen from. She believes that the pollen collected in an urban environment will be more diverse, thus, providing increased dietary breadth for our bees. She will analyze the protein content and pesticide load in the pollen samples as well, in an effort to better understand the nutritional content and impact of the pollen collected.

Best Foods for a Woman's Body

Learn more: www.cookinglight.com It's important for both sexes to eat an array of healthy foods. But if you're female, science shows these seven foods could offer that extra edge. Flaxseed: A "hot" ingredient in foods targeted to women, scientists are teasing out three potentially beneficial compounds in flax: plant based omega 3 fats, fiber, and disease-fighting compounds called lignans. Kale: An underappreciated leafy green, kale is chock-full of a lot of good things for health in general, and some for women in particular. Antioxidants like lutein and zeazanthin protect the eye. Add to that a day's worth of vitamin C and small amounts of calcium. But tag its womanly superstar status to vitamin K, a potent bone builder. Researchers find that women who eat diets rich in vitamin K are at lower risk of hip fracture. Walnuts: Noshing on a handful of walnuts may fight both breast cancer and osteoporosis. In one new study, just two ounces of walnuts per day helped delay development of breast cancer and slow tumor growth in mice. Salmon: While the omega 3 fats in salmon do everyone a lot of good, women net a few unique benefits. Pregnant? Studies find the oils in fatty fish like salmon can help you beat the post-partum blues, particularly if you ratchet up intake during the third trimester. Building blocks for the brain and nervous system, omega 3 fats are also critical for the developing fetus.
