Oakland Revolt: Occupy cop crackdown

The city of Oakland, California, is reeling after one of the biggest protests the 'Occupy Wall Street' movement has seen. About 80 demonstrators were arrested and several injured after what started as a peaceful rally was met with a heavy-handed police response at the end of the day. Hours before that, thousands of anti-corporate protesters forced a shutdown of America's fifth largest sea port. That's as the general strike - America's first in over half a century - also paralyzed several businesses in Oakland's downtown. Occupy Oakland Video: Protester shot with rubber bullet for filming cops

Video courtesy: www.youtube.com The video of an Occupy Oakland protester shot by police has been made available, showing perhaps the most outrageous act of overzealous law enforcement action in the weeks since the movement began. An unnamed protester rallying in Oakland, California last week during the city's General Strike managed to be rolling film as he approached a gauntlet of riot gear-clad police officers lined across a city street. Filming their motionless blockage of the road, the videographer asks the cops, "Is this okay?" several times as he paces from one side of the road to the other, camera in hand. The narrator of the footage appears peaceful and calm as he walks around 20 feet away from the police during the course of the 40 second clip in which he at no point attempts to provoke the officers. The footage is cut short, however, after a burst of light is seen exploding from the array of law enforcement followed immediately by the cameraman falling to the ground. The exact projectile fired by the cops has not been identified, though the man was believed to be hit by either a beanbag or a non-lethal rubber bullet round. Video courtesy of Ustream - Occupy Oakland OAKLAND, Calif. -- Police have begun arresting people remaining in Frank Ogawa Plaza this morning, and are in the process of dismantling what remains of the Occupy Oakland camp that has occupied the space for most of the last month. Police blocked off the plaza shortly before 6 am today with lines of riot police. Most protesters had already moved into the street at 14th Street and Broadway before police arrived. Protesters continue to play music and chant, and have not been ordered to disperse yet, according to live video accounts by protesters. Some of the arrestees were from the camp's Interfaith Leaders tent, who held a vigil tonight waiting for police to arrive. Dozens of Oakland police, assisted by Alameda County Sheriff's deputies and several other local police agencies from as far away as Pacifica and Foster City moved into the area around Frank Ogawa Plaza this morning to enforce continuing violations in the plaza related to the Occupy Oakland encampment, according to city of Oakland officials. Police moved in beginning at 4 am and by 5 am officers in riot gear had blocked streets surrounding the plaza.
