Occupy Oakland Video: Protester shot with rubber bullet for filming cops

Video courtesy: www.youtube.com The video of an Occupy Oakland protester shot by police has been made available, showing perhaps the most outrageous act of overzealous law enforcement action in the weeks since the movement began. An unnamed protester rallying in Oakland, California last week during the city's General Strike managed to be rolling film as he approached a gauntlet of riot gear-clad police officers lined across a city street. Filming their motionless blockage of the road, the videographer asks the cops, "Is this okay?" several times as he paces from one side of the road to the other, camera in hand. The narrator of the footage appears peaceful and calm as he walks around 20 feet away from the police during the course of the 40 second clip in which he at no point attempts to provoke the officers. The footage is cut short, however, after a burst of light is seen exploding from the array of law enforcement followed immediately by the cameraman falling to the ground. The exact projectile fired by the cops has not been identified, though the man was believed to be hit by either a beanbag or a non-lethal rubber bullet round. #OPD Kettles Occupy Oakland Protesters Into the YMCA! #J28 #MoveInDay

www.politicalfailblog.com On January 28, Occupy Oakland's move in day, OPD repeatedly used unnecessary force against protesters. Their lack of organization, training, & humanity created chaos throughout the day and into the night. In this clip you can see that OPD has kettled hundreds of people, leaving us with no where to go. In order to get a better view I climbed the steps leading up to the YMCA. Once there it became clear that the police were moving in on both sides, so a few of us asked the employees inside the YMCA to help us by letting us in. After a couple minutes they opened the doors and invited the hundreds of people out in the street into their building, to escape the violent OPD actions. I was one of the few to make it all the way through the building and out the back door. Unfortunately up to 400 others were trapped and arrested.

Occupy Oakland, Police kettle protesters, Jan 28 2012 Stressed after watching this? Mellow out with some healing music www.reverbnation.com Just to clarify, despite what you heard on the news about Oakland on Saturday, Jan. 28, the police did not let protesters leave after dispersal order was given. The law states if the protest moves (and it did) to a different location, another dispersal order must be given. Then the police must provide at least two exits. When the dispersal order was given at 19th & William St., I immediately went to an officer and asked how to comply & was told to back up (they were in riot gear with batons and guns drawn) one officer suggested I try the other side of the plaza. At this point I could see 3 of my 4 exits were blocked by riot police. I went to the corner I could not see & there was another line of riot police. I was waiting by them when the tear gas & pepper bullets were fired. I turned and went to the line of riot police behind me and proceeded to sit in front of them, requesting to exercise my right to leave and was refused. I was suffering form the effects of the tear gas at this point, my throat had closed, my eyes were tearing and burning. Eventually they left chasing protesters who had pushed down a chain link fence to leave the area. I remained sitting on the sidewalk, shocked. I went home at this point and watched the rest on live streaming video. The demonstration moved to 23rd & Broadway (YMCA) and this is where the police <b>...</b>

Oakland activists step up 'Occupy' protest

Protesters in Oakland, California are planning to try and shut down the city's port - the fifth-busiest shipping container port in the United States, in what they are calling a general strike on Wednesday. The protesters are part of the 'Occupy' movement sweeping the world in which people are rallying to stop, amongst other things, corporate greed. Al Jazeera's Rob Reynolds reports from Oakland.

'Occupy Oakland' protester shot by rubber bullet while filming cops

From: Press TV [VIDEO] 'Occupy Oakland' protester shot by rubber bullet while filming cops Mon Nov 7, 2011 5:1PM GMT An unidentified protester in Oakland holding a video camera, filming a police line during the early hours of Thursday, Nov. 3, is shot with a rubber bullet even after repeatedly asking officers, "Is this okay?" Rubber bullets, though considered non-lethal, have killed people before. They can also cause serious internal injuries and even break bones. Despite their name, rubber bullets are small metal cylinders merely coated with a layer of rubber, and can be launched from traditional firearms. The incident took place following Thursday's call to general strike, which saw tens of thousands of protesters shut down one of the city's major highway overpasses. Though the event was largely peaceful, police said they made 103 arrests, mostly for protesters who failed to disperse after being told to leave public spaces. Police were heavily criticized for their role in beating Iraq veteran Kayvan Sabehgi with nightsticks as he was walking home from the protest. Although he suffered a ruptured spleen and was in extreme pain pleading for medical attention, none was given, and officers allegedly accused him of being a drug addict. Sabehgi was finally allowed to see doctors 18 hours later, when paramedics had to physically remove him from his cell because he was in too much pain to walk. Authorities said they were investigating the incident. www.presstv.ir <b>...</b>

Occupy Oakland: Over 400 Arrested As Police Fire Tear Gas, Flash Grenades at Protesters

democracynow.org - Police have arrested more than 400 Occupy Oakland protesters, as well as a number of journalists, in one of the largest mass arrests since the nationwide Occupy protests began last year. When protesters attempted to convert a vacant building into a community center on Saturday, witnesses say police used tear gas, bean bag projectiles and flash grenades. Several hours later, police said some of the protesters broke into City Hall. However, demonstrators claim they found the door to City Hall already ajar. We play a video report from Oakland filed by John Hamilton of KPFA. We get a response from Occupy Oakland member, Maria Lewis, to Oakland City Councilmember Ignacio De La Fuente's accusation that the Occupy Movement is engaging in "domestic terrorism." "They are more interested in protecting abandoned private property than they are the people. The idea that opening up a social center is terrorism, is very telling of the narrative of the police state," Lewis says. Protesters approach a police line in Oakland, CA, on 1/28/2102. Police respond. Hours after the mid-day incident shown here, protesters took the streets for a peaceful response march. The mass arrests (350+) occurred during the evening march, even though the evening march had different people, a different purpose, and NO incidents of protester aggression or rioting. THE MASS ARRESTS IN OAKLAND OCCURRED DURING A PEACEFUL PROTEST, NOT DURING THE INCIDENT SHOWN HERE. The 350+ arrested protesters were charged under CA Penal Code 409, which reads: "Every person remaining present at the place of any riot...after the same has been lawfully warned to disperse...is guilty of a misdemeanor." This was an illegal mass arrest because no "lawful warning to disperse" was given. In order for it to be lawful, the warning must be loud, repeated, location-specific, cite the penal code, and identify the direction to disperse in. The march was forced into a kettle with no exit route, and the only police announcement stated, "You are under arrest. Submit to that arrest." The police cannot arrest a mass group of marchers for the actions of a few people at a different time and place! The mass arrest at Occupy Oakland is a First-Amendment issue! Scott Olsen, Vet Wounded at Occupy Oakland, on Recovery, Protests, Iraq & Bradley Manning

DemocracyNow.org - Democracy Now! interviews someone who became one the faces of the global Occupy movement this year. Scott Olsen, a 24-year-old former US Marine who served two tours in the Iraq war, was critically wounded after being shot in the head by a police projectile at Occupy Oakland. In a rare interview, Olsen joins us to discuss his life-threatening ordeal, his involvement in this year's historic Wisconsin and Occupy protests, the case of accused Army whistleblower Bradley Manning and how he too had access to similar types of information, and the US withdrawal from Iraq. "They aren't respecting our right to assemble, protest and redress our government for grievances," Olsen says of police repression of the Occupy protests. "They are terrorizing us from going out [to demonstrations]. That is a sad statement for our country." Olsen also says he expects to rejoin the Occupy and antiwar protests as his recovery progresses. "I look forward to being a part of the 99 percent and Iraq Veterans Against the War in 2012," he says. Oakland Revolt: Occupy cop crackdown

The city of Oakland, California, is reeling after one of the biggest protests the 'Occupy Wall Street' movement has seen. About 80 demonstrators were arrested and several injured after what started as a peaceful rally was met with a heavy-handed police response at the end of the day. Hours before that, thousands of anti-corporate protesters forced a shutdown of America's fifth largest sea port. That's as the general strike - America's first in over half a century - also paralyzed several businesses in Oakland's downtown. RT correspondent, Lucy Kafanov, was at the very heart of unfolding events throughout and describes how they developed. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com
