Odeon Cinemas was created in 1928 in Britain by Oscar Deutsch. Odeon publicists have claimed that the name of the cinemas was derived from his motto, "Oscar Deutsch Entertains Our Nation", but it had been used for cinemas in France and Italy in the 1920s, and the name is ultimately derived from Ancient Greek. The name "Nickelodeon" was coined in 1905 and was widely used to describe small movie theatres in the United States during that era. However the company is most associated with J. A friend of mine worked at ODEON Cinemas in Southampton and got sacked for posting a comedy video on his 'private' facebook account. Here is his account of what happened and the overreaction by the managers of ODEON, along with the video that the managers didn't take in the light-hearted manner it was meant. He also told me it was the most restricted job he has ever had. ODEON Cinemas in Southampton have a reported 400+ CCTV cameras watching visitors and staff constantly. You are being watched while you view your chosen movie. They give you no privacy. Boycott ODEON, or request your CCTV footage every time you visit, under the freedom of information act. Andy Holden 'The Third Attempt (A Meditation on the Dumb Motif)', part one of 'Two Short Works In Time', at the Odeon Cinema, Covent Garden, April 2009. The film is 16mm transfered to digital, with camera and editing in collaboration with Lucy Parker, and soundtrack is adapted from 'Fields and Birds and Things' by Johnny Parry, from the album 'More Love and Death'. The film revolved around the sculpture 'The Third Attempt', a temporary structure built in the polder landscape of Vijfhuizen, Netherlands, in 2008.

The cinema event consisited of two pieces, this work was the second piece, Last Stop fot the Good Old Times, a work for piano quintet, marble game and live camera projection. a short video to help support this beautiful cinema and restore it to it's former glory. To secure the long-term future of the former ODEON Cinema (New Victoria/Gaumont) Church Street, Preston. Others may know the building as Clouds/Tokyo Jo's/Lava & Ignite. The 82 year old cinema has stood disused since 1992 Guild Year; only the nightclub beneath has remained in use. Meetings will begin in 2010 to discuss plans for the building, by way of forming a 'non-for-profit' company limited by guarantee. This project and the building will be a catalyst for all major redevelopment initiatives in Preston and will carry Preston along the same cultural heights as many of the UK's most influential cities. Of course there is an awful lot to consider, but with the help of those living in and around Preston, nothing is impossible!
