The Big Country - Jerome Moross (1958)

One of my favorite themes from one of my very favorite Westerns. 'The Big Country' is a somewhat overlooked Western epic from 1958, directed by the great William Wyler and Starring Gregory Peck, Jean Simmons, Carroll Baker, Charlton Heston and Burl Ives, who won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his powerful role as Mr. Hennessee, the leader of a poor family clan. It is the Hennessee clan which has had a blood feud with wealthy ex-Civil War Major Henry Terril; Terril's daughter Pat (Carroll Baker) is coming home from the East, bringing with her a dashing new fiance (Gregory Peck) to meet her doting father. It is as her fiance, Jim McKay, automatically is repulsed by the fickle violence of the dog-eat-dog clans that the movies anti-violence themes emerge. It is these themes that make the movie stand out so much from others. Jean Simmons co-stars as the local school teacher and owner of 'The Big Muddy', the home of the whole town's water supply. It is her stubborn nature which keeps the Muddy from falling into the hands of either clan, and from letting the bloodshed reach a tragic head. 'The Big Country' has so much to offer, with the subtleties that underlie the plot, the enjoyably well-done acting (particularily with Jean Simmons, who is horribly underrated), beautiful cinematography, breathtaking directing and a stunning theme, as you are to now hear. 'The Big Country' rises above cliches, is exquisitely done and has a fresh spin on moral and ethical themes that has ...

The classic theme by Francis Lai for the romantic drama, Love Story (1970). Starring Ryan O'Neil and Ally McGraw in star making turns, Love Story is indeed a classic as it follows two students at Harvard, their unlikely love affair and the impending tragedy that lies in their way. One of the most classic and memorable romantic themes of any film, Franco Zefferelli's Romeo and Juliet score, composed by Nino Rota, reflects the tragic passion of the famous story it portrays. Franz Waxman - Theme from Rebecca (1940)

One of the most haunting scores of all time, master film composer Franz Waxman wrote this chilling masterpiece for Alfred Hitchcock's only Best Picture Oscar winner, Rebecca (1940). Based off of Daphne DuMaurier's classic book, Rebecca is the story of the second Mrs. deWinter, a nameless young woman preceded in matrimony by the enchanting yet decieving Rebecca deWinter, and her struggle to live in a world that is perforated by the atmosphere of her predecessor. Rebecca is one of my favorite films of all time. Directed by: Alfred Hitchcock Cast: Laurence Olivier, Joan Fontaine, George Sanders, Judith Anderson. Based on the book Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier.

Scored by Bernard Herrman, this part of the North by Northwest theme is used throughout all of the parts in that movie that do not involve action. I will be uploading the main suspense theme as well. This piece is used most prominentyl in the romantic scenes between Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint in the train, which is why is is called "Train Conversations." I added the clip at the beginning :). Theme from Laura (1944) - David Raksin

There are elements of Maurice Ravel's 'Daphne et Chloe' in this, yes, for those who were wondering, and I did mix the two together. In this Otto Preminger directed film noir we meet some of the defining characters of the genre, and we view one of the best movies of the 40s. Despite the great script, to-a-tee acting, smoky atmosphere and moody cinematography, what really comes in to focus with this movie is its music. After all, if you look at most of the great movies, you will find a great score backing up the brilliance. This score is done by David Raksin. One of my all-time favorite scores, and one of my favorite films of the 50s. Peyton Place follows Allyson Mackensie (Diane Varsi) , an aspiring writer, her mother (Lana Turner), whose veiled past is hindering her relationship with her blossoming daughter. We meet Allyson's closest friends, Norman (Russ Tamblyn) and Selena (Hope Lange). Both Norman and Selena are from somewhat abusive homes, Norman with a controlling mother who is jealous of every move her son makes, and Selena with a physically abusive stepfather. Peyton Place follows a whole town which is seemingly perfect on the surface, but is haunted by its own dark secrets that it is so desperately trying to make dissapear by not acknowledging them. Cast: Lana Turner, Diane Varsi, Hope Lange, Russ Tamblyn, Terry Moore. Directed by Jerry Wald. Book by Grace Metalious.

Gigi Theme - Lerner & Loewe - 1958

This instrumental version of the title song of the Best Picture winning musical 'GIGI' captures the essence of the film, which is one of my personal favorites. Gigi is top notch entertainment, based off of the play by the brilliant and risque Colette and starring some of the finest French actors in the business at the time of its production. These included the loveable Leslie Caron, the charming Louis Jourdan and the always entertaining personalities of Hermoine Gingold and Maurice Chevalier. With songs written by hit musical team Lerner & Loewe, and production values that are hard to beat, Gigi is the last of the great MGM musicals. Sure, there were brilliant musicals in the 1960s as well, but none of them were of this old style that reigned in the golden era of musicals. Gigi certainly ended one of the most enjoyable eras of film with a bang, and it continues on with its timeless charm and qualities that cannot help but make you smile. Music: 10/10 Movie: 10/10

The Black Stallion - Main Theme - Carmine Coppola

One of my very favorite films for a rather long time, The Black Stallion (1979) is directed by Carol Ballard and produced and funded by Francis Ford Coppolla. With this score by Ford Coppola's neice, Carmine Coppola, the movie is so much more than a family movie, and brings to the table cinematography by Caled Deschanel that rivels that of 2001: A Space Odyssey. With the first half hour holding no more than a few pages of dialogue it is the music, cinematography, direction and acting by young Kelly Reno (who plays Alec) that takes centre stage. Once the film moves to America it does not lose its beauty, as it so easily could have done, but rather continues to build on itself, adding an enjoyable performance by Teri Garr as Alec's over-protective mother and one of Mickey Rooney's best screen appearances as The Black's trainer. The end race is one of my favorite climaxes in a movie. Call it a horse movie if you want to, but I think The Black Stallion is something so much more beautiful than that. Music 5/5 Film 5/5. (Most of the things I post are this rating: that is why I post them!) Note: Sorry the music trails off at the end...it was hard enough to find this long a version!

To Kill a Mockingbird - Guilty Verdict - Elmer Berstein

This piece from the score of the wonderful 1962 film To Kill A Mockingbird plays in the movie when Tom Robinson is sentenced as guilty by the court, and all of the black members in the courtroom silently stand for Atticus Finch, the lawyer for innocent yet black Tom. In one the most defining movie which displays the 60's civil rights movement, To Kill a Mockingbird is based off of the modern classic of the same name, by author Harper Lee. The film stars Gregory Peck, in an Oscar winning performance, as the courageous Atticus Finch, as he cares for his two motherless children Jem (Phillip Alford) and Scout (Mary Badham). When approached to defend Tom Robinson (Brock Peters), a black man accused of raping a white woman, Atticus takes the case to prove Tom's innocence. Balancing the charm of Scout and Jem's childhood with their dawning of understanding their father's life, To Kill A Mockingbird is at once as insightful as it is relevant today. Director: Alan J. National Velvet (1944) - Main Theme - Herbert Stothart

This is the lovely main title of one of the most charming movies ever put to celluloid. National Velvet is the simple story of a young girl, Velvet Brown (Elizabeth Taylor), who dreams of entering her horse The Pi into the world's most prestigious horse race: The Grand National. With the help of young Mi Taylor, a young man with a mysterious past and an excellent knowledge of horses, Velvet just might have a chance at winning her greatest aspiration, as well as finding out who she is along the way. In more modern takes on this type of tale it would automatically become cheesy schlock without any charm or magic, but with the gentle writing, pitch-perfet score, loveable well-developed characters and engaging locales of National Velvet this movie has ended up being greatly beloved by parents and their children alike. In a time with so much strife National Velvet is an honest look at family values and will instantly have you nostalgic for the beauty that lies in an innocent childhood. Directed by: Clarence Brown Starring: Elizabeth Taylor, Mickey Rooney, Ann Revere, Donald Crisp and Angela Lansbury. Based on the book National Velvet by Enid Bagnold. Score by Herbert Stothart *Note: This film features excellent supporting performances from both Ann Revere and Donald Crisp.

Alfred Newman - The Diary of Anne Frank (1959) - Main Title

This is one of the greatest and most heartbreaking pieces of cinema I have ever seen. It portrays the story of Anne Frank and her family as the are in hiding in a secret annex above a spice factory during WWII. The Franks are populated by Otto and Edith Frank, Anne's parents and her sister Margot. Also in hiding in the Annex were the van Dams, (Anne's pen name for them), Hermann, Auguste and their son Peter, who were later joined by Fritz Pfieffer (in the film named Mr. Dussel). Only Otto Frank survived once the Annex was found out. It is hard to think of anything else to say about Anne Frank and her story, if only because there is so much that cannot be put into words. Let me just say that her and her diary have had a profound impact upon my life like no other book of any kind ever has, and I know her diary has done the smae for countless amounts of people all over the world. The film version is one of the most heart-wrenching movies you will ever see. Directed by: George Stevens Cast: Millie Perkins, Shelly Winters, Joseph Schildkraut, Richard Beymer, Diane Baker. Maurice OST - Richard Robbins - End Title

In 1987 period film director/producer duo and real-life partners Ismail Merchant and James Ivory took a big risk in making the film MAURICE, based off of the controversial and post-humously published semi-autobiographical novel by the great EM Forster. Riding off of the coattails of their previous success with the popular adaptation of another EM Forster novel, A Room With A View, the Merchant/Ivory film of Maurice ended up slipping neatly under the radar, with critics agreeing that it was well-done, but no one having the courage to promote it at the cost of speculation about their own orientations. I am of the belief that it is a truly great film. Were it to come out today its popularity would probably rival that of Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain, and it would be deservedly so, for Maurice is a far greater film than that much heralded one. The title character of Maurice, (James Wilby) is a young man in college, a young man who eventually meets Clive (Hugh Grant), who is, like Maurice, a closeted gay, but, unlike Maurice, unable to come to terms with any sort of relationship between men that is not purely platonic. As their friendship turns into a relationship both men delve into deep frustration with the others opposite views; this is to such an extreme that Clive gets married. We slowly realize how much Clive loves Maurice, but how he cannot bring himself to terms with that love, resulting in his own tragedy or repression. Maurice, however, liberates himself, finding love ...
