REM KOOLHAAS Lecture on OMA's Work
The Areen Architecture Series at the Department of Architecture and Design held a lecture entitled: "On OMA's Work" by Rem Koolhaas. Rem Koolhaas is an internationally acclaimed architect and urbanist. He founded the Office for Metropolitan Architecture in 1975 together with Elia and Zoe Zenghelis and Madelon Vriesendorp. Koolhaas graduated from the Architectural Association in London and in 1978 published Delirious New York, a Retroactive Manifesto for Manhattan. In 1995, his book S,M,L,XL summarized the work of OMA and established connections between contemporary society and architecture. At this moment Rem Koolhaas is heading the work of OMA as well as AMO¬the conceptual branch of OMA, a think tank focused on social, economic, and technological issues. Rem Koolhaas is a professor at Harvard University where he conducts the Project on the City, a research program investigating changing urban conditions around the world. The projects include an analysis of the role of retail and consumption in contemporary society (The Harvard Guide to Shopping, 2001), a study on China's Pearl River Delta (published as Great Leap Forward, 2002), and studies on Rome, Lagos, Moscow, and Beijing. OMA has completed the Netherlands Embassy in Berlin (2003), a campus center at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago (2003), the Prada Epicenter in Los Angeles (2004) and the Public Library in Seattle (2004). London, England (CNN) -- With Dubai no longer the booming architect's playground it once was, China is an increasingly attractive territory for leading architects. Rem Koolhaas, the Dutch architect and thinker known for bold, adventurous designs like the Seattle Public Library and the new Central Chinese Television headquarters in Beijing, recently unveiled his plans for a cultural district in Hong Kong. "I think that any architect today has to be interested in China," the Pritzker-prize-winner told CNN at the Venice Architecture Biennale, where he was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement award. Plans are still in their initial stages, as the architect's Rotterdam firm -- the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) -- is in competition with firms Foster + Partners and Rocco Design Architects Ltd for the commission. The three firms were hired as "conceptual plan consultants" by the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, whose aim is to create a vast cultural hub incorporating 15 performing arts venues, a park and a state of the art museum. Koolhaas, whose buildings also include high-concept Prada stores across the world and the Netherlands Embassy in Berlin, was so drawn to the idea of the cultural district that he specially set up an office in Hong Kong in addition to those he already runs in Rotterdam, New York and Beijing. Oma significa abuela en alemán. Al parecer, las raíces germanas acompañaron a Marta Hoffner en sus 87 años de vida y "sin saberlo, se transformó en un mensaje, voluntad y pureza", como recordó el autor de La Oma, Daniel Altamirano. Desde que a los 27 años ingresó en territorio chaqueño, la futura Oma realizó todo tipo de trabajos de campo: sembró, y crió ganado, gallinas y chivos. Cuenta Altamirano que, durante el regreso, la inspiración fue genuina. Así esbozó las estrofas de lo que sería un poema. Poco después el compositor Pedro Favini le puso música con ritmo de chamamé y en 1977 Víctor Hugo Godoy, Héctor Pacheco, Eduardo Márquez y Américo Albornoz, integrantes de Los Cuatro de Córdoba, la estrenaron. El éxito fue rotundo. Según Altamirano, "La Oma es una de las canciones más queridas por la gente de todas las edades. Yo soy el más sorprendido, pues nunca imaginé que esta simple letra produciría un milagro de tanta admiración y de los diferentes públicos del país por escuchar el tema y por saber si es cierto o no que La Oma existe". www.clarin.com

La Oma: una mujer, una canción Así le decían a Marta Hoffner de Rabe. Nacida en Brasil e hija de alemanes, vivió en San Bernardo, Chaco. El cantautor Daniel Altamirano, conmovido por su tenacidad, le compuso un tema musical. a mediados de 1975 Daniel Altamirano llegó con sus hermanos a San Bernardo para visitar a un coprovinciano. En uno de los viajes, el doctor Mauro (un médico llegado desde Mendoza junto a su esposa Ana) le pidió a La Oma que le preparara un chivo para agasajar a los cantores. Así, el 25 de mayo 1975, Mauro y Daniel Altamirano recorrieron los cinco kilómetros de una picada bordeada de altos árboles hasta llegar a su "rancho de barro y apuntalao con quebracho colorado".
