$44 Haier 7" HLT71 monitor review - DSLR FILM NOOB

www.dslrfilmnoob.com When I first saw this monitor last year the price was almost $140. Since the price was not much less then the Lilliput monitor I basically dismissed it. But since the monitor was discontinued this year, the price has dropped to $44, which makes it a much more attractive option for filming. The monitor is still only standard definition, but it does have an audio amplifier and a built in battery. On top of that it has a very handy wide screen mode that allows you to use the whole screen instead of the center section of the screen. On the down side batteries are a bit pricey at $20 a pop, the screen isn't extremely bright, and the 1/4 20 hole on the bottom of the monitor isn't quit 1/4 20 ( I had to us a tape to clean out the threads). If you're interested in this monitor you can pick it up here: www.amazon.com There is also a written review with photos here: www.dslrfilmnoob.com Equipment used in this video: Canon t2i & 7d Canon 35mm f1.4 Canon 50mm f1.2 Sennheiser G2 wireless mic CPM FILM TOOLS RIG

300 watt CFL lighting setup - DSLR FILM NOOB

www.dslrfilmnoob.com Lighting is always a popular subject and It's no secret that I prefer to use Compact Florescent lighting. I have more then one lighting setup but one that is very handy and affordable comes from Cowboystudio: www.amazon.com At a price of $100 this lighting setup puts out 1200 watts of equivalent light at a white balance of 5500k. Each lamp only draws 80 watts a peace, so if you don't want to buy the whole kit you could always just buy the bulbs and use them in a normal house light socket. How to install a Flat picture style on your Canon DSLR - DSLR FILM NOOB

www.dslrfilmnoob.com Sorry for the delay in video production over the last week or so. I've been in a motel for two and half weeks off and on. In fact this video is shot in two different motel rooms, facial hair changes from shot to shot. Any how after covering the flat picture styles last week a number of you asked for a guide on how to install a flat picture style on to your canon DSLR. First find the disk that's included with your camera, and install the EOS utility software included on the disk. Once you've done that just download the picture style you like. You can find links to all of the picture styles here: www.dslrfilmnoob.com Then copy the steps included in this video to install the flat picture style on your camera. Better audio recording tips for DSLR filming. - DSLR Film NOOB

www.dslrfilmnoob.com Recording audio can be one of the most important things you can do for your work. One of the first things I recommend for new DSLR shooters is an XLR splitter: rcm.amazon.com By splitting the audio output of your microphone, you can record 2 different volume levels at the same time. This is very handy if you don't have time or the extra help running your field recorder. If one audio level peaks you can always switch to the second channel audio in post. Another Very handy item is the Zoom h4n remote control: rcm.amazon.com This gives you a very basic audio read out and allows you to start and stop the zoom h4n with out having to reach forward and operate it. I recommend adding Velcro to the back of your remote so that it can be mounted on or near your camera. MPC 1000 32gb CF card

I often get messages asking if you can use a 32gb card with the MPC 1000. I picked up a card and gave it a try. Turns out a 32gb card works out just fine. So if you don't feel like installing a hard drive, then a 32gb card will work just fine.

Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 lens review - DSLR FILM NOOB

www.dslrfilmnoob.com The Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 lens fits firmly in the value category. At between $350 and $450 this lens covers a very usable range and an affordable price. If you are making the jump to a DSLR or trying to make do with the kit zoom the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 will be a nice step up. On the positive side: Price, Sharpness, and Fixed f2.8 across all focal lengths On the negative side: Noise auto focus, no full time manual focus, lens barrel extends out, and the lens is made out of plastic The Focal range is very usable the picture quality is very good and you are probably willing to put up with the focus noise for the price tag. Handy method for attaching your batteries to your DSLR rig - DSLR FILM NOOB

www.dslrfilmnoob.com I've been getting a lot of questions about mounting batteries and other items to your DSLR rig. Many of these items are missing proper mounting options like 1/4 20 thread holes or brackets. The easiest method I've found for mounting random items to my rig has actually turned out to be industrial strength velcro. This stuff has adhesive on one side and velcro on the other. It's a very cheap and handy option that holds very well. You can pick this stuff up online for dirt cheap: www.amazon.com The only thing I will worn you about is that if you use to much velcro, you might have a hard time getting your items unattached.
