For the fifth week in a row, activists gathered in downtown San Francisco to protest BART over police shootings and the agency's ongoing strategy to stifle dissent. Although protests against BART began shortly after Charles Hill was gunned down by a BART police officer, the momentum quickly died down. But when BART boasted to the news media that they had silenced a protest by shutting down cell service in the tunnel, it ignited a new call for protest under the banner Anonymous. For three weeks in August #opBART demonstrations were derailed by a government agency that was quick to arrest activists for even raising their voices outside of the fare gates. But even when demonstrators gathered in the so-called "Free speech zone," they found themselves encircled by police and arrested. During that September demonstration several members of the media were detained for as long as two hours, and even a reporter from the San Francisco Chronicle found herself in handcuffs. On Monday, September 12, after taking off Labor Day from the usual protests, a small group gathered once again to continue #opBART. For the first time in weeks, the police allowed the protestors to hold their demonstration without being arrested.

Following up on "Anonymous" initial call for a protest to combat BART's decision to cut cell service earlier this month to stifle dissent, a group of more than 100 people converged at Civic Center BART station. Although BART once again shut down several downtown stations in a preemptive strike against the anticipated protestors, the transit agency also utilized a new strategy in arresting those who raised their voice against BART on the platform. As this video shows, a woman who was vocal against the protestors was not taken into custody.

2011-08-22 @ 17:21 PDT on the platform at Civic Center BART Zachary Running Wolf was arrested after giving a brief speech calling for BART police to be disbanded. I spoke with Zachary a couple months later at OccupySF and he told me that after this arrest they held him for several hours to keep him from returning to the protest, and that the charges against him were dropped.
