Roundtable: The Business of Open Source - Evolution, convergence and confusion?

In a few years, Open Source has grown from a new development and licensing model supported by individuals or small groups to a major technology ecosystem, at the basis of the Internet, software-as-a-service and cloud revolutions. It is not only becoming 'the hidden backbone of the software industry'. It is now at the core of business strategies from most major IT players, from software vendors to integrators and SaaS providers. Will maturity come with a change of culture and perspective? Through technology cooperation and acquisitions, large proprietary vendors such as Oracle, Citrix or VMware could now claim to be labelled as 'Open Source Companies'. On the other side, large Open Source-based players are adopting dual licensing models that would have been, in the past, clearly labelled as proprietary. Last but not least, many new comers argue that this debate may be out of date, with cloud and the service being the future of the software. As a result, the old Proprietary vs. Open Source business antagonism is rapidly blurring into a large spectrum of models. Does it lead to convergence or confusion? Which are the possible evolutions of Open Source business strategies? May Open Source actually disappear as a segment, has it already? Or is it more than ever, the key to technology adoption, innovation and business success? The conference will gather world specialists around this debate. Round-table discussion chaired by Andrew Aitken, Founder, Olliance and Open Source Think ...
