Dr. William Rupp's Message About the Helicopter Crash - Mayo Clinic

William C. Rupp, MD, vice president of Mayo Clinic and chief executive officer of Mayo Clinic in Florida, speaks Dec. 27, 2011 about the helicopter crash that claimed the lives of two Mayo Clinic employees and a pilot on Dec. 26. Mayo Clinic is mourning the loss of Dr. Luis Bonilla, a cardiac surgeon, and David Hines, an organ procurement technician who, along with the pilot of the helicopter, perished during a mission to bring the gift of life to a transplant patient. Every hour across the nation dedicated professionals are on call and in the air, transporting organs and restoring hope to patients in their most desperate hours. "We've been touched by the outpouring of prayer and sympathy from patients, friends and colleagues who understand the demands and sacrifices made by these dedicated transplant teams," said William Rupp, MD, vice president of Mayo Clinic and chief executive officer of Mayo Clinic in Florida. "We hope the community honors their sacrifice by supporting organ donation." Read more at our blog post: bit.ly

World first synthetic organ transplant

Surgeons in Sweden have carried out the world's first synthetic organ transplant. Scientists in London created an artificial windpipe which was then coated in stem cells from the patient. Crucially, the technique does not need a donor, and there is no risk of the organ being rejected. The surgeons stress a windpipe can also be made within days. The 36-year-old cancer patient is doing well a month after the operation. The BBC's Fergus Walsh reports. From BBC Video.

TEDxAsheville - Joyce Roush - The power of one

In her 37 years as a registered nurse, Joyce has been present at over 1000 patient deaths. Having worked in the area of trauma, hospice and organ donation, Joyce knows the power of each person's life and death. Her familiarity with the dying has inspired her to commit her life to the living. In 1998, while working a coordinator for the Indiana Organ Procurement Organization, Joyce made the decision to donate one of her own kidneys to a complete stranger, not realizing, at the time that she would be the first person in America to become a "Good Samaritan Organ Donor." The news of Joyce's donation, performed at John Hopkins Medical Center traveled throughout the United States and the world. Her story was featured in People Magazine, The New York Times, and hundreds of newspapers and other magazine as well as being interviewed on such programs as the Today Show and The CBS Evening News with Dan Rather. Joyce believed that if she had been called to share the gift of life that others would also, once they were aware that it was possible. To spread the word of her donation, she traveled throughout North America speaking at medical conferences, giving commencement speeches, and talking to thousands of people about the life-saving surgery. Despite being called crazy, she always believed in the goodness of the human spirit. A true visionary of compassion, she foresaw a time when thousand of lives could be saved by the generosity of a stranger. She was the recipient of numerous ...

Love on the Transplant List - BBC

An amazing story of a remarkable couple whose love is tested to the very edge of life. Kirstie is 21 years old, born with cystic fibrosis and has always known that her life would be short. In March 2011 she was put onto the transplant waiting list, having been told that she had end-stage lung disease and could be dead within six months. This film follows Kirstie's extraordinary experience of living on the transplant list, the fear and uncertainty, the realities of having constant pain, taking endless medications, relying on oxygen machines 24 hours a day to breathe and doing all of this whilst planning for her wedding. It follows Kirstie being rushed to hospital three days before the wedding before bravely making it down the aisle through sheer willpower and determination. As her condition becomes more critical and the chance of a lifesaving lung transplant seems more remote, we follow Kirstie's husband Stuart facing the very real possibility of his new wife dying - they had only been married for three weeks. Despite all the setbacks Kirstie continues to fight for her second chance at life till the very end. www.bbc.co.uk
