This outdoor concert was part of a student-run open house for the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois. Tesla coils were used to create musical pitches via a control system designed by university student Steve Ward. Two coils were used. The right coil is playing a prerecorded Midi track, acting as the bass, and the left one is performed live as a lead sound via the Continuum fingerboard. The Midi track as well as additional audio backing tracks were played via Cubase running on a Open Labs Neko workstation. In spite of the frigid temperatures (4 degrees Fahrenheit, 26 mph winds), the concert was well attended and was voted the most popular event of the open house.

The event garnered the largest attendance for any outdoor concert up to that time. Willie was supposed to come on stage right after Waylon, but for whatever reason, Riders in the Sky took the stage and were boo-ed quickly away! Willie finally arrived and launched in Whiskey River at about 1AM!!!! I had seen Willie several times prior to this and a few times since. This video is showing the opening song named Bad Reputation and continued into the first half of Cherry Bomb. Sorry, I cut off the last half of Cherry Bomb. This is my FIRST OUTDOOR concert experience. For many years I always went to the big arena concerts -- all indoor, of course. I am looking forward to some outdoor concerts in the near future. The Doors Live Onstage Video May, 1968 On May 19th, 1968, my brother and I took our girlfriends to an outdoor rock concert - the Northern California Folk-Rock Festival at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds. Besides the Doors, other performers at the venue were the Grateful Dead, Big Brother & the Holding Company (Janis Joplin's group), Country Joe & the Fish, Jefferson Airplane, Steve Miller, Taj Mahal, the Youngbloods, the Sons of Champlin, the Loading Zone, and a few other San Francisco bands from that era. My brother Mark thought to bring our dad's 1962 era Bell & Howell "Zoomatic" 8 mm movie camera -- the exact same model with which Abraham Zapruder captured the assassination of JFK. No batteries, no electronics, just a wind-up spring for power. As far as anybody knows, this is the only known footage from this concert. There are lots of still shots on the Internet, but no video. After trying unsuccessfully to get the remaining Doors to sign off on allowing me market this footage on E-Bay -- they asked me to "donate" it to their archives -- fat chance, I've decided to upload it for all the world to see instead. Mark entrusted me with the film, so I had the original 8 mm Kodachrome footage remastered digitally. The images were passed through an aerial image optical system from a projector to a high end camera which then sends the signal directly to a DVCAM/Mini DV deck. I can't even remember when; maybe it was sometime in January. Anyway, back then, I had already done most of the Vocaloid work: Notes, words and tempo fitting. Tempo fitting!
