Winter Solstice at Outermost House

The Winter Solstice, which occurs at the instant when the sun's position in the sky is at its greatest angular distance on the other side of the equatorial plane as the observer, brought the arrival of winter on Cape Cod this past Saturday morning, Dec. 22, 2007 at 1:07 am Even though the coldest weather of the year is still yet to come, our days will become longer until the summer solstice in June. This video, "Winter SOlstice at Outermost House," is produced by the Henry Beston Society and intended to give the viewer an idea of what Beston, author of "The Outermost House," may have experienced during his winter months on the beach. Here was Beston's take on the arrival of the Winter Solstice from the "Midwinter" chapter of "The Outermost House": "The sun, this December morning, has come to the end of his southern journey, he climbs the whitish sky to the south over the white fury of the Orleans shoals, and takes on a silvery quality from the pallor of the sky. On such a morning went ancient peoples to their hills, and cried to the pale god in return to their woods and fields; perhaps the vanished Nausets danced a ceremonial dance on those inland moors, and the same northwest wind carried the measured drumming to these dunes." Still photography and video by Don Wilding; Outermost House photograph by Nan Turner Waldron. The Outermost House (Earthlings excerpt)

"We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals. Remote from universal nature, and living by complicated artifice, man in civilization surveys the creature through the glass of his knowledge and sees thereby a feather maginified and the whole image in distortion. We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate of having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein we err, and greatly err. For the animal shall not be measured by the man. In a world older and more complete than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth." Henry Beston ~ A quotation about animals from "The Outermost House" (1928)

A marvelous book, written with simplicity, sympathy and beauty. ISBN 0-8050-1966-9 Music: Toccata for lute No. 6 ~ Johannes Hieronymus Kapsberger The sight of any free animal going about its business undisturbed, seeking its food, or looking after its young, or mixing in the company of its kind, all the time being exactly what it ought to be and can be ... what a strange pleasure it gives us! Even if it is only a bird, I can watch it for a long time with delight; or a water rat or a hedgehog; or better still, a weasel, a deer, or a stag. The main reason why we take so much pleasure in looking at animals is that we like to see our own nature in such a simplified form. There is only one mendacious being in the world, and that is man. Every other is true and sincere, and makes no attempt to conceal what it is, expressing its feelings just as they are. Arthur Schopenhauer

Propaganda - Dream Within A Dream (Live 1985)

From Edgar Allen Poe- Dream Within A Dream Take this kiss upon the brow! And, in parting from you now, Thus much let me avow You are not wrong, who deem That my days have been a dream; Yet if hope has flown away In a night, or in a day, In a vision, or in none, Is it therefore the less gone? All that we see or seem Is but a dream within a dream. I stand amid the roar Of a surf-tormented shore, And I hold within my hand Grains of the golden sand How few! yet how they creep Through my fingers to the deep, While I weep - while I weep! O God! can I not grasp Them with a tighter clasp? O God! can I not save One from the pitiless wave? Is all that we see or seem But a dream within a dream?
Earthlings (Ausschnitt), The Outermost House

Chemistry 101 Part 1

chemin10.com Chemistry 101. An introduction to Chemistry. Chemistry 101 -- Matter Chemistry is the study of matter. The atomic theory teaches that matter is made up of pure substances known as atoms and molecules. Atoms are single elemental particles, such as gold, silver and potassium. Molecules are chemical combinations of two or more atoms, such as water (H2O), oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2). Matter may also be composed of mixtures of substances, such as a glass of orange juice. A glass of juice is a mixture of many different atoms and compounds, which are NOT chemically combined. Because they are not chemically combined, they can be separated by physical means. For instance, water a pure substance, can be removed from orange juice, which is what juice manufacturers do to make concentrate. Chemistry 101 -- Atoms Atoms are not the smallest units of matter. Rather, atoms consist of protons and neutrons, which are housed in the nucleus of an atom, and electrons, which surround the nucleus. Protons are positively charged, electrons are negatively charged, and neutrons possess no charge. Atoms differ from one another because of the number of protons present in their nuclei. For instance, atoms with only one proton in the nucleus are all hydrogen atoms. Atoms with 12 protons in the nucleus are all carbon atoms. Atoms are neutral particles, which mean they do not carry a charge. Therefore, atoms have equal numbers of protons and electrons. As stated previously, an ...

'Headlong Waves' at Coast Guard Beach

"The surf is high, and on the far side of it, a wave greater than its fellows is shouldering out of the blue, glinting immensity of sea." -- Henry Beston, "The Headlong Wave," from "The Outermost House" Anyone who had the opportunity to visit Coast Guard Beach in Eastham yesterday (Oct. 19, 2008) was experiencing what Beston wrote about in The Outermost House. Much like the autumn day Beston was experiencing, this day featured a stiff northeasterly wind, fueling an already heavy surf casting itself into the beach. The wind was courtesy of an ocean storm to the east and a strong high pressure area to the west. Winds were steadily blowing in the 25-35 mph range, with some higher gusts. How to Harvest Swiss Chard From Your Container Garden

It's been about 3-months since I planted the swiss chard seeds when I started my garden from scratch. The two containers are now bursting with some nice greenage and are ready to be harvested and picked. To harvest the the leaves all you have to do is locate the outermost leaves of the bunch and pick them about 2-3 inches from the soil line. You can do this by hand or with a gardening tool. I just do this by hand. By selecting the outermost leaves, you will help to promote more growth. That's it. Pretty simple. For more information, please visit www.UrbanOrganicGardener.com

This interview with Beyle and many others will be part of a special talk about the demise of Henry Beston's "Outermost House" at 2:45 pm on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008 at the Cape Cod National Seashore's Salt Pond Visitors Center in Eastham on Cape Cod. Michio Kaku Speaking about the Voyager Space Probes

Michio Kaku (Host of Science Fantastic on the Talk Radio Network) speaking about the many contributions of the Voyager Space Probes and on some of the fears that are associated with them. The twin Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft continue exploring where nothing from Earth has flown before. In the 33rd year after their 1977 launches, they each are much farther away from Earth and the Sun than Pluto. Voyager 1 and 2 are now in the "Heliosheath" - the outermost layer of the heliosphere where the solar wind is slowed by the pressure of interstellar gas. Both spacecraft are still sending scientific information about their surroundings through the Deep Space Network (DSN). The primary mission was the exploration of Jupiter and Saturn. After making a string of discoveries there -- such as active volcanoes on Jupiter's moon Io and intricacies of Saturn's rings -- the mission was extended. Voyager 2 went on to explore Uranus and Neptune, and is still the only spacecraft to have visited those outer planets. The adventurers' current mission, the Voyager Interstellar Mission (VIM), will explore the outermost edge of the Sun's domain. And beyond.
