Lockheed P-38 Lightning Flight Demonstration - Up Close !

This is the Planes of Fame Museum's (Chino, California) P-38J. A rare and fascinating aircraft. Only one problem; the turbocharged-muffled Allison 12-cylinder engines are just too darned quiet! You may notice a slight difference in aircraft markings between the clips; they were recently changed. But all these clips are of the very same aircraft. Enjoy the video!

Lefty`s White Lightning Blue Skies Forever Lefty(Salute) Lefty Gardner KERRVILLE — On Dec. 24, 2008, Lefty Gardner departed this earth, showing us how to soar with the eagles, but this final time, on the wings of an angel. He passed away peacefully at the age of 87. Lefty started his aviation career at the age of 21, when he joined the Army Air Corps. He flew 34 missions in the European Theater during World War II in B-24s and B-17s, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with Three Oak Leaf Clusters. After his tour, Lefty joined an elite group of pilots flying to Sweden at night carrying supplies for the underground and POWs. After 12 missions, he came home and finished his education at Texas A&M, receiving a BS degree in agriculture. Lefty and his brother started an Ag flying business in Crystal City, Texas. He then went on his own and, with a dear friend, developed a process used to control mesquite and other noxious brush on the West Texas ranches, allowing better grazing conditions for cattle. He retired from this after 35 years. Lefty was reared in the Beeville, Texas, area. During his lifetime, he lived and worked his businesses in Crystal City, Brownwood, Mercedes and Lakeway. He and his wife retired in Kerrville, Texas. He, along with others, founded the Confederate Air Force, now known as the Commemorative Air Force, and was a member of the General Staff for many years. Japanese Zero, P-38 & Hellcat Flight Demonstration- AWESOME!

This is a very interesting video clip of footage that I took in 2005 in the crystal-clear air at the Palm Springs Air Museum (Calif.). This condition is what is appropriately termed "severe clear." The clip starts with impressive engine startups of the Planes of Fame Museum's (Chino, Calif.) P-38J and Japanese A6M5 Zero and also the PSAM Grumman Hellcat. The POF Zero is the only one flying with the original Sakae ("Prosperity") 14-cylinder engine. A very unique sound due to its 14 separate exhaust stubs. Compare that sound to the 18-cylinder P&W R-2800 of the Hellcat (including a BEASTLY back-fire!) and the smooth and refined, turbocharger-muffled sound of the P-38's twin Allison V-1710s.Flybys of all three aircraft follow. GREAT sounds of these three rare aircraft! Man, it doesn't get more fun than this to us warbird enthusiasts, does it? This is the kind of great warbird stuff that we are routinely treated to in SoCal USA on a two-to-three-times-a-month basis during parts of the year. Steve Hinton is flying the P-38 and John Maloney is flying the Zero. If you'd like, also check out my other warbird videos. Thanks and enjoy!

P-38's Flying Over Alaska, Eleventh Air Force (1943)

airboyd.tv Army Air Forces film from early 1943 filmed by a Lt Ward. There are several rolls of film of various activities in the Aleutian Chain in Alaska during 1943. All without sound but in great condition visually. http The Alaskan Air Force was activated on Elmendorf Field 15 January 1942 to manage the buildup of the Army Air Forces in Alaska. It was redesignated the Eleventh Air Force on 5 February 1942. Following the Japanese bombing of Dutch Harbor in the eastern Aleutian Islands and the occupation of Attu and Kiska in the western Aleutians in early June 1942, the Eleventh Air Force launched an air offensive against the Japanese on the two islands. Missions were flown initially from Cape Field on Umnak Island in the eastern Aleutians and later from fields built on Adak and Amchitka. Headquarters Eleventh Air Force was moved to Davis Field, Adak in early 1943. Attu was retaken in May 1943, and the Japanese withdrew their garrison from Kiska in late July. The Aleutian Campaign ended with the reoccupation of Kiska on 15 August 1943. Primarily an air war, it was the only World War II campaign fought on North American soil. The Eleventh Air Force flew 297 missions and dropped 3662.00 tons of bombs. One hundred and fourteen men were killed in action, another forty-two were reported missing in action and forty-six died as a result of accidents. BDF - P-38 Wilk - Polish Multirole Fighter

P-38 „Wilk" (wolf) was an extremely advanced polish multirole fighter (also capable of precise diving bombing). The project was ordered by the Ministry of War in 1934 and accomplished in 1936. The tragic death of young, very talented „Foka" (seal) engine's designer - engineer S. Nowokuński - caused that engines were late and ready to service just in 1939. Two prototypes of P-38 were built with temporary engines in 1937 and the first flight had place in 1938. P-38 Wilk was shown to the world public as the star of the 16th International Paris Aviation Salon in November 1938. The experts called him the most advanced and beautiful plane in the world. P-38 was the first aircraft designed to use laminar flow airfoils. It was over 10 years before last version of famous North American P-51 „Mustang"! The Wilk was one of the new generation, entirely metal, twin-engine aircraft with two crew members housed in the long cockpit equipped with dual controls. It was powered by two lightweight PZL „Foka" V-engines (490 hps), it had a maximum speed of 270 mph (500 km/h) and range of 777 miles (1250 km). It was 27 ft 10 in (8,35 m) long with 36 ft 10 in (11.05 m) wingspan and 4790 lbs(2155 kg) empty weight. The aircraft was armed with one 20 mm cannon, 4 machine-guns and 667 lbs (300 kg) bombs. Lockheed P-38 Lightning - Part 1

Part 1 of 5 The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was a World War II American fighter aircraft built by Lockheed. Developed to a United States Army Air Corps requirement, the P-38 had distinctive twin booms and a single, central nacelle containing the cockpit and armament. Named "fork-tailed devil" by the Luftwaffe and "two planes, one pilot" by the Japanese, the P-38 was used in a number of roles, including dive bombing, level bombing, ground-attack, photo reconnaissance missions, and extensively as a long-range escort fighter when equipped with drop tanks under its wings. The P-38 was used most successfully in the Pacific Theater of Operations and the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations as the mount of America's top aces, Richard Bong (40 victories) and Thomas McGuire (38 victories). In the South West Pacific theater, the P-38 was the primary long-range fighter of United States Army Air Forces until the appearance of large numbers of P-51D Mustangs toward the end of the war.The P-38 was unusually quiet for a fighter, the exhaust muffled by the turbo-superchargers. It was extremely forgiving, and could be mishandled in many ways, but the rate of roll was too slow for it to excel as a dogfighter. The P-38 was the only American fighter aircraft in production throughout American involvement in the war, from Pearl Harbor to Victory over Japan Day. - en.wikipedia.org

Lockheed P-38 "Forked-Tail Devil" Flight Demo

This is Jack Croul's P-38L flying a demonstration at the Palm Springs Air Museum, California. This aircraft is based at Chino, California. The P-38 was sometimes called "Der Gabelschwanz Teufel" (Forked-Tail Devil) by the Germans during WWII. Although not a great one-on-one dogfighter, the P-38 had some positive attributes such as great speed at altitude, high dive speed and some fearsome armament consisting of four Browning .50 cal. guns and one 20mm Hispano cannon, all mounted in the nose. One advantage of having all the guns in the nose was that they would all fire to the same aiming point no matter what the distance to the target, making the P-38 a great gun platform. This was unlike wing-mounted guns which had to be bore-sighted so their fire would converge at a certain distance (typically 300 yards or some other distance preferred by the pilot). The result was a very concentrated field of fire at any firing distance (although the cannon did have a somewhat different trajectory than the .50s). As a result, German pilots were instructed, although their aircraft may outmaneuver the P-38, to never allow a P-38 to get it's nose pointed at them no matter what the range. This aircraft has two Allison V-1710 twelve cylinder engines with BOTH superchargers AND turbochargers. It was this combination of aspiration methods that allowed the P-38 to have good high-altitude performance, the only operational WWII, Allison-powered aircraft to do so. 90'' RC P-38 lightning crash

This is a video of a friend's RC plane crashing. the plane is a Lockheed P-38 lightning The RC NTSB concluded that there were two factors that brought the plane down: The engine cut out, obviously, but also upon inspection of the wreckage, it was discovered that the flap servo was missing the reverser, causing the flaps to act as ailerons in the same direction in which the engine was cut. So when the engine went out, the pilot hit the flaps, but they acted as ailerons causing the plane to spiral down. Even if the engine hadn't cut out, there would have been a crash on landing.

Link to engine sound version www.youtube.com At the time I filmed this, these were the only 3 flying Lockheed P-38 Lightnings in the world. As of the end of 2010 there are 7 flyable P-38's, 6 in North America and 1 in Europe. This footage was filmed at Planes of Fame Air Museum, home of the P-38, 23 Skidoo, and frequent stop over for Glacier Girl and other P-38's. This was filmed back in 2007, and at that time, according to the owners and pilots of all three of these featured P-38's, they were the only 3 flying P-38's in the world. If you prefer the original engine sounds, there is another version of this video, just for you. Its the same thing with the original sound track. HD: FSX FSD Lockheed P38 Lightning

The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was one of the most successful fighters in the Pacific during WWII. Designed in 1937 - 1939 in answer to an Army Air Corps requirement for pursuit aircraft in twin-engine configuration to achieve a specific speed/weight ratio with a given amount of armaments. In March 1940, the French and the British put the P38 into service. After the fall of France in June 1940, the British christened the plane "Lightning". The P38 was used extensively as a long-range escort fighter to protect heavy bomber operations in both Europe and the Pacific, escorting bombers at altitudes between 18-25000 ft.
