PALETERO ---Ice Cream Vendor
This is a poem by Olin Tezcatlipoca written to deal with the insane gang crimes going on in our neighborhoods throughout our continent, across all of the borders. This is the story of one Paletero, an ice cream vendor, and the tragedy of his life: being a poor man that is robbed and murdered by his own people. Left to rot in an alley. Our ignorance allows our children to grow up in gang culture. They become either gangsters or people with the gangster mentality. These are our own children, our people, that are killing our people, robbing our people, dishonoring our people. Confronting gangsters is useless. We need to give our children the option of being educated in our Nican Tlaca Anahuac heritage in order to have true pride, true honor, and a sense of duty toward the education and liberation of our people.

04/16/2008. This "Essence of Place" assignment was for my COGR 280 introductory production course at UCSD. It took about 18 hours to complete and was filmed in the alley behind my house in the community of Logan Heights, San Diego CA. Special thanks to Jose M. (El Paletero), Mike (the scary smoking guy), Manuel V. (the dad with his kids), the trash collectors, Señor C. (the viejito), LV (the paleta girl), and Isaac Artenstein (el Profe).

"Paletero", the Mexican ice-cream man brings joy to the kids of the SOMA. I will not disclose his name, but he's a long time friend. Though his job is to bring cold sweets and joy on a hot day, his life is getting more and more complicated. He is an amateur musician in his spare time, composing love songs with a keyboard at home. Off record, he commented on the new developments in his life, his new baby daughter, and the realities of his daily living. He quit music to take up gardening and other side jobs to tend to his new domestic partner and daughter. "It used to be all fun when I was by myself, but now I have a daughter to worry about" he says with a humble, contagious smile. He's one of my favorite people in San Francisco.
